Except that, in Esperanza, the DArk Forest hypothesis isn't what's happening. The first contact was the so-called Azulians, who've made it crystal-clear that their sole desire is helping other civilizations and they have no ulterior motives. People in Esperanza grow up knowing all about this, learn the basics of their language, and are taught from childhood to understand that they're real friends.

It's not of course but the Dark Forest hyphotesis is about irrational fear; of "who's gonna stab in their back first, so I rather stab first". I'm saying, besides their lunatic idea, their fear it's understandable, tho not appliable since as you say, they're peaceful. And let's remember not all of them are hateful, some are resentful due to past trauma, like losing a family. But yeah, a good portion is hateful.
