Ihti is Aztec for "Drink"

Ihti is a hybrid - unknown lineage - and it's starting to show.

Careen does not care, and to question her decision to not abandon her adopted daughter is social/political/physical suicide.

Note: Ihti is one of Careen’s adopted children—a small Poochyena cub with pink eyes and short, shadow-dark fur streaked with red. The hints of her hybrid blood are beginning to show, creeping in slowly like dawn over the plains. Her fangs are a little longer than they should be. Her fur has strange shimmer patterns in moonlight. Some say she moves like something not quite canine. Careen doesn’t bat an eye.

Note: She raised Ihti as her own, alongside her many other children, and made it very clear to the tribe: to question Ihti’s place is to question Careen’s judgment—and no one dares. It would be unwise. It would be dangerous. But still, whispers follow Ihti sometimes. She hears them. Feels the eyes.

Note: Yet she is not alone. Her siblings protect her fiercely. And Careen’s warmth is constant, a hearth against the cold of the unknown. Ihti doesn’t yet know what she’s becoming. But when she looks into the water and sees those flickers of something else in her reflection, she wonders. And drinks in the mystery of it.
