Seems Gene has decided to respond to a watcher. Let's see what happens...
GENE (in reply): "Yeah, we have blue flowers on the trail---there's some here!"
GENE (happy): "Some yellow ones are growing over there!"
[Gene is puzzled as the watcher continues on about wildflowers; Gene doesn't get it, and is a little annoyed, yet still wants to please ...but this is an instance in which he cannot]
GENE (blushing): "No, sorry, I don't know anything about [flowers]"
Well, there you go---one of you finally got Gene to break the fourth wall, and what's done with it: Gene is heckled about flowers on the trail. Tsk, tsk. I mean, why was Gene asked about flowers---he's not a botanist! D:
The cubs see flowers every day, even if only incidentally. The cubs haven't many thoughts about flowers---they know not to pick or eat them, so the cubs're satisfied only to look.
The cubs know where to find large patches of flowers if flowers are what you want (albeit, they tend to stay out of flower patches, because bees)... but don't expect much beyond that.
EDIT: The flowers were identified as Conoclinium by
I once saw a cartoon where a man and his wife talk about dandelions. The wife says, "They're weeds, John." The husband replies, "They're not! They're honorary flowers!"

I know they're tall and the leaves/stems have a red tint. It's late in the year now, but I'll see if I can find any today (if I do, I'll make a picture).

Puzzled Gene is the cutest... and embarrassed Gene is a close second. Would love to have those two expressions made into shirts. They just scream emotions.
Also, one vote for an expression collage with Gene... he'd make a great subject. :3

GENE: This is a power pole, They're a common tree out west, known for their lack of leaves or even branches. They get their nutrients through wires in exchange for carrying phone signals.
GENE: Now, it's autumn. But don't be fooled, even though it's called 'fall' the leaves actually JUMP, before the squirrels can get them!
Gene: This tree is an OAK. *Points to acorn* I mean, in a nutshell. They're used to make knotty pine boards!

I like flowers on the trail and those by the road. They bloom for no one, as no one put them there. Just little bits of color against the brown and the green.
