A Comics Question
Seems Tasli may meet his end today ...let's watch! :D

HANK: "You've taken my lunch money one time too many!"

HANK: "I've become a mighty samurai warrior---I will now cut you asunder for all the evil you have done!"

TASLI (raspberry): "You talk very big for a boy in a dress"

HANK: "It's not a dress---it's a kimono!"

TASLI (coolly): "Still looks like a dress to me. I'll take your lunch money now"

HANK (taken aback): "What!? I'm about to part you in two---and it's not a dress!"

TASLI (mildly inconvenienced): "Yeah, yeah"

[Tasli snaps his fingers; an anvil falls from the sky, landing on Hank]

TASLI: "And I suppose that isn't an anvil!"

HANK: "...Ow"

[the lunch money is on the ground for Tasli to take]

See, that's how cartoon rabbits solve their problems ...as well how they sometimes bring trouble to others.

This comic featured Hank from the forthcoming 'Paws of Fury' movie (link tested 07/09/2022): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_hkjvjx2ek

HYPOTHETICALWATCHER: "This movie looks awful ...so I guess it goes with your art, but why did you draw this?"

Well, it just so happens I went to the theater for the first time since taking my mother to see 'The Meg' (like, four years ago ...time flies, doesn't it?).
Anyway, I took myself to see the new 'Jurassic World' movie (more on this later), making it in time to see most of the preceding trailer train.
Among said trailers was one for 'Paws of Fury' ...which I knew on sight would be my next 'Arctic Dogs'.

For those who don't know, my quickie sketch of Swifty and Jade is (as of writing) my most fave'd upload of all time. Yup---it's not an ACO, and it's not a comic: just a two-minute sketch I scribbled on a corner of a piece of paper I tore off a scratch pad. :p

Anyway, I'm hoping something will surpass 'Swifty and Jade' ...I think Hank has a shot (I regret passing on 'Rock Dog'---I wasn't gonna let Hank get away)! XD

I also find it odd that Hank decides to solve his bully issues in the movie by taking up a weapon ...I shouldn't have to explain why this is an issue.
in fairness, I dunno how the movie will handle this (the film looks pretty stupid/harmless), but the opening of the trailer bothered me a bit.

So... Jurassic World.

I'd seen the first two films in the theater, and since I'd heard this would be the final JW film, I endeavored to go see it (for completion's sake).
I almost never go to the theater, so for me this was a big-deal thing to do.

I took the bus to the theater and bought my ticket. I had the better part of 40 minutes before the movie would begin, so I hopped over to the pizza place, bought a slice and sat outside with it (I made it a point not to drink anything as I don't believe in rising during a film, and I didn't want to be uncomfortable).
I took my time eating---I phoned a friend and we spoke a while. I finished the pizza and went to the grocery to buy some gum (cinnamon, for those wondering), and proceeded back to the theater.

I noted a 'No Re-entry' sign on the door, but I ignored it and walked straight to #14 where the movie would be playing.
No one took my ticket---I just walked directly in from outside and took my seat. I fully expected some kid with a flashlight to come in and request it, so I had my ticket at the ready, betwixt two fingers, in anticipation (I was determined to neither speak nor look at whoever would approach, but just shoot them the ticket) ...but no one ever came (I've the feeling I could have just walked right in without paying). :p

Anyway, I always sit in the front row, slouching all the way down so as not to make the back of my head a worthy target for M&Ms and popcorn.
When I went to church, I would always sit in the back with the other heathens ...but in a place of sin, I sit up front (I know my place---I need Jesus more every day).

As it turned out, I mostly had the theater to myself.

A mom had taken at least two kids to see this---they sat pretty far in the back. I made no effort to look their way, but I could hear them.

Upon hearing the kids' voices, I'd hoped I hadn't mistakenly walked into 'Lightyear' or 'The Rise of Gru', but we were all in the right auditorium.
In retrospect, this PG-13 movie had nothing in it for children---it barely had anything in it for me (more on this later). :P

During the 'Paws of Fury' trailer, one of the kids said they wanted to see that. I mentally added Hank to my draw list (obv) because I know many of my watchers will see it, too. o:

It took me a while to re-adjust to the theater experience. For one, I had to watch the entire thing through the dark, polarized lenses of the Gucci shades I'd worn to get there, as my eyes are very light-sensitive (I'm sure I'd've looked strange, but, again, no one could see me).
Additionally, I'm not accustomed to surround sound, so the first few times the call of a dinosaur/cricket, etc., would play 'behind' me, I'd involuntarily turn my head in its direction. :P

As for the movie ...it wasn't as bad as I'd been led to believe it to be (I watch critic reviews on YT), but I was unimpressed.
I'll not spoil anything save to say this did not feel like a 'Jurassic' movie. In fact, the dinosaurs could be written out entirely without sacrificing anything (oddly, the film may've been somewhat better without them). :P

I'll say also that if you hate bugs/insects, don't go see this. ^^

The only times the kids behind me would say anything was when Blue (the raptor) was on screen. Beyond that, there was mostly silence (albeit, the mom thought it was really funny when Maisy shot the bird to (I think) Wu or Dodgson (it's been less than a day and I've already forgotten three-quarters of this movie). XD

Of the new characters, Kayla Watts is easily the best. Lego has a minifigure of Watts (from set 76947), and I fully intend to get the figure ...despite Lego getting her hair color completely wrong: https://sta.sh/01ikqw98rkw8 :p

I believe the kids will greatly prefer 'Paws of Fury' over this movie ...I probably would, too, albeit I've no intentions of seeing it---God only knows when/if I'll return to the theater.

After the movie, I returned to the grocery and picked up a few things (not too much because I didn't have my backpack---I presumed I couldn't take it to the movie).
The highlight of my shopping experience was the store-brand coffee bags were buy-one-get-one, so I took advantage of that.
After, I mosed over to the Chinese place and bought a 'dragon phoenix' for supper (I saved the cup of steamed rice to eat sometime today).
I waited an age for the bus (I think I caught the last one on that route) and walked home the rest of the way. :3

The end (I feel my story was at least as good as the movie). :3

Pencil...

The featured pencil is an 'Assault Pencil' from AssaultLimited: https://www.facebook.com/AssaultLimited/

'Assault Pencils' are/were described thus (it's been almost a year since I bought these),

"Assault Pencils are completely murdered out, tactical black on black and constructed with you in mind.
The tactical hex body ensures optimal comfort when gripping. Utilizing the highest quality elements Earth has to offer makes for the best writing experience possible.
Next time you need a pencil, make sure you grab an Assault Pencil to get the job done!"

Mine came in a pack of nine. I forgot what I paid for them, but I had an issue with my order. AssaultLimited corrected it, and sent me a Tactical Spoon to recompense for my suffering. XD
I still have the spoon, but only God knows where it is in this mess. :p

Anyway, I've not used any of these pencils, so I'm unsure what quality they are (my guess is these were made by Dixon).

I'm aware there are 'Samurai/Katana' pencils out there that would go much better with a comic like this, or an ACO of Hank, if I ever make one (yes, this is a pencil): https://sta.sh/0qdqnyvsmwy

...but I'm not paying $30 for it. :p

Yes, I've dropped hundreds on a single pencil, but (alas!) the sword pencil wouldn't preserve my investment, as it has neither historical relevance nor (serious) collector appeal---it's just a novelty.
That said, if it ever drops to 40% off (as if), I'll reconsider. :3

I remember hearing about this movie ages ago when it was still called Blazing Samurai.  The voice cast looks great but I agree with you, I don't have high hopes for this one.

So it's been in production a while? This I didn't know (and will look into it). :3
KNIFE

It was conceived in 2010 and was "inspired" by Mel Brooks "Blazing Saddles"(!!!??!!!)!!
It was originally slated to be released in 2017 but for "reasons" it keep getting pushed back until it's final release date of July 15, 2022.

Blazing Saddles!!!  O.O

So... is Tasli a regular bully now? I mean, yeah, he was pretty mean towards Mubba and surely can be impulsive, but I never figured him to be commit-lunch-money-robbery type of rabbit.
IceAgeChippies
3 years, 6 months ago
It's possible Tasli is branching out---he can pick on Mubba only so much seeing as Mubba is part of the group.

Tasli won't get away with his misdeeds forever---it will come back to him someday, somehow. :3

I like the character of Hank and the story sounds fun but WOW what I mentioned above!
I'll see it eventually but not going to a theater unless it somehow get outstanding reviews. Even then probably not.

I LOVE the idea of an "Assault Pencil" cause you never know when you'll need one to dispatch a bad guy!

https://youtu.be/mlb8bSQzSxg

https://youtu.be/votcOf5cYCM

As for the Samurai pencil it's VERY cool (love the little Kakedai (sword stand)_) but ya $40 IS a high price for just a modern day pencil.  If it ever goes down in price let me know cause I might get one myself (heck I might get a set of the Assault pencils just because ya never know.).

It's NOT going to get good reviews, but YouTube critics will have a field day with it (and I'll absorb every moment of it, as I did with Norm of the North and many others before and after it). :3

The pencil in the first video is a Dixon Ticonderoga, as indicated by its ferrule. I'm unsure about Joker's. :o

Speaking of pencils, I seem to have been remiss in featuring the Heart pencil (I need to get to that, esp. since I've learned some things about it since).

Also, you like General's, right (or was that someone else)? :o

What we learn here is that it doesn't matter in cartoons if you're good or bad, but if you're the right species. This actually has some pretty deep roots in the Hayes Code.

TASLI: Wow, I can't believe I got TWENTY lunch monies! I should visit the orphanage more often!

GENE: That doesn't seem very nice...

TASLI: What are they gonna do? Tell their parents?
IceAgeChippies
3 years, 5 months ago
“The Hays Code was this self-imposed industry set of guidelines for all the motion pictures that were released between 1934 and 1968,” says O'Brien. “The code prohibited profanity, suggestive nudity, graphic or realistic violence, sexual persuasions and rape"

These days you cannot have a movie without (effectively) every one of those. :p

Dropping anvils is funny (in theory---I'm not much into slapstick), and it's the sort of thing only cartoons can do.
Swords are less whimsical (generally) and (like anvils) shouldn't be used to solve one's problems, or be suggested as a means of doing so.

Of course, I'm probably overthinking it ...or underthinking it. Hm ...also, it occurred to me that if the sword were rubber, one could call it a slap-stick, and that would be funny (as it would take the edge off ...ok, I'll stop now). ^^

Oh it went further than that. For example, you couldn't have corrupt cops or politicians, that would undermine faith in democracy or suchlike. (Hypnotized, controlled or replaced figures though...) It also led to 'good species' and 'bad species'. There were a lot of rules around who could 'win' in a comic or cartoon and how. Initially there were a lot of cartoons where, say, the big bad wolf might win in the end, but this was quickly curtailed. Soon your Screwball Squirrels gave way to Mickey Mice. This regulation is (part of!) what Tiny Toons and Animaniacs pushed back against during their runs.

Oh, also there was a separate version for comic books and newspaper cartoons. They're both gone now, but the tropes they inspired live on.

Aaah but overthinking is so interesting. Looking at the trailer it seems Hank has been very unfortunate, even when he becomes a samurai. Tasli of course aims to pick on the weakest, most miserable and most downtrodden -they generally are already too broken to fight back. Here it seems his efforts (And those of everyone else in the world) have pushed the pup to breaking point. He has bought a weapon to school.

Fortunately our 'hero' has disarmed and eliminated this threat and shall be treated as a hero. The lesson we learn? Crushing spirits has no negative consequences and helps weed out the weak.

Push-back is good if one pushes against the right things. :3

Mubba, Mimi and Gene (esp. Gene) will confront Tasli on his recent misdeeds (how it will end, we cannot yet know).
zfqfmb

However it ends, Tasli will be able to console himself with some sweet, sweet lunch money. I sense a shining career as a CEO or politician in future. You cannot force goodness on such a fiend, only a higher power can hope to cleanse such a black heart.

Good to see the ACME company is still alive and flourishing lol. :3

Remind me to mind myself around Tasli... anyone who can materialize an anvil out of nowhere and have it drop on top of your person isn't someone to be taken lightly. Quickly... we must communicate with Gene for guidance!

Gene will surely have a word with Tasli---the pilfering of lunch monies cannot continue! D:

Cute comic. I almost never go to theaters. Renting a movie on a streaming service or buying the Blu-ray/DVD usually isn't that much more expensive and saves me from having to use public transport/etc.

I feel about the same, with the addition of my dislike of most movies made after the late 2000s. :P

What is it that usually bothers you about such movies? I sometimes think modern movies are rather loud, fast-paced and visually intense. We're just old farts who grew up with boring old crap. :-)
IceAgeChippies
3 years, 5 months ago
An over-reliance on CG; contrived plots; wokeness/political correctness (in its various forms). Not to mention much of what we get these days is either a reboot, a remake, or is replete with references (I'm so weary of throwbacks).
While I'm not opposed to meta-humor (I use it my comics from time to time), there's far too much of it in Hollywood, esp. where kids stuff is concerned.
An example occurs in this trailer, when Hank mentions a/the montage. There's this need for B movies like this to call out their own tropes and (by so doing) remind the audience they're watching a movie (likely written by hacks).

That kind of thing. :p
