Ion, Flint and Zephyr in the most unusually first place where they met/became friends. This picture was taken by one of the nurses to commemorate their budding friendship just before lights out on Zephyr's last night in the ward before he will be released from the hospital.
While Ion and Zephyr are now the best of friends and partners, their relationship started out on rocky ground. Ion despite being from a noble family, didn't really fit in with anybody at school and would hang out with a bunch of kids that basically took advantage of him due to his feeling of wanting to fit in. One day a new kid moved to their town and was places in Ion's class. The kid named Zephyr was someone who seamed distant and usually buried in his own world. The "friends" Ion hanged around didn't really care for this new kid and he was picked on and bullied by them constantly, though Ion tried not to participate in this, he was edged on to join in on the heckling. Ion didn't enjoy this but didn't want to loose the "friendship" of the people he hung out with.
This would lead Ion into doing things that he would normally not want to do like one day where he was pressured to try to climb a really tall old tree. Ion being part grey fox did like to climb and play in trees, though he would stick to shorter and easier one to get into, was intimidated by the grandness of the one he was being told to climb. Not wanting to disappoint his "friends", Ion calmed his nerves and started to climb the tree, getting up fairly high off the ground. Trying to stabilize himself on one of the branches, he looked down at the group that was still egging him on. Starting to feel more nervous, Ion started trembling more and lost his balance, falling out of the tree and hitting the ground hard on his right arm. Ion screamed out in pain, as his "friends" basically left him there to suffer alone. It was a few minuted until a passing by car heard Ion's cries and screams and got out to check what was making the noise they were hearing. They were shocked to find a young boy laying on the ground in agony and quickly called an ambulance.
Ion was quickly taken to the hospital as his parents were called to inform them of the incident and they came right to Ion's side as he was waiting to get x-rayed. Ion still sobbing and crying as his mother tried to comfort him as doctors took an x-ray of his injured arm. The confirmed that is was cleanly broken and that Ion would need to have a small operation to have plates fut in to fix it. Ion still crying a bit and now scared about what has to be done to him, was changed into a hospital gown and lead to the operating room where successful surgery was performed on his broken arm. Ion woke up a few hours latter in the children's ward where a strangely excited boy was watching over him. Before Ion could speak, the boy named Flint, was all over him with questions and just being overly excited. Ion got Flint to settle down a bit where Flint told him that he has been in and out of hospitals with a heart condition he has had since birth and was currently recovering from one of his surgeries. He also told him that he is usually alone and lonely in the ward, though some of the nursed do come in and play with him and that he was excited that there was another kid his age that would be with him for about a week.
Ion, surprised that he would have to remain in the hospital for about a week, did take solace that there was someone there with him that really seamed to want to be genuine friends with him. A few days went on as Ion got a custom to his new daily routine and enjoyed hanging out and playing with Flint. About 4 days into his stay they learned that another kid would be joining them once he got out of surgery, but only until the next morning. At about 10:30am Ion was surprised that the kid being wheeled in was that kid the he and his "friends" had picked on, Zephyr, that just underwent a tonsillectomy. When Zephyr awoke, Flint tried to get him to play with both him ad Ion but Zephyr was apprehensive. Confused, Ion called over to Flint and explained to him what happens to Zephyr at school and that he probably hated him for it.
But Flint surprisingly took Ion's hand and dragged him over to Zephyr where he tried to get them to settle their differences. Ion not knowing what to say was surprised when Zephyr open his mouth first and wished him a speedy recovery with his arm. He also told Ion that while on the way to the doctors with his parents, to get his sore throat checked out, he heard loud screams coming from a near by park they were passing by. His parents got out to discover that Ion was injured and they tried to comfort him until the ambulance arrived. Zephyr said he also saw Ion getting loaded into the ambulance and felt sorry for him, especially after seeing that his "friends" were nowhere to be found after he saw Ion leaving with them after school ended that day.
Ion thinking long and hard, all he could say was that he was sorry for what was happening to him and to what he had done to Zephyr at the behest of his "friends". Zephyr forgave Ion as he could see that he was misguided and helped Ion to see that his "friends" were not really friends, and only hanged out with him as he was easily manipulated. Then abandoning Ion when he fell out of the tree was prof that they really didn't care about him in any way. Zephyr did offer Ion to hang out with him instead as they would probably have a lot more in common. Flint seeing that now Ion and Zephyr were getting along like he hoped they would, excitedly declared them friends now and just wanted them to come over to the toys and games area to play with him.
Ion and Zephyr putting their short history behind them, enjoyed the rest of the day playing and having fun with each other and Flint as well. The nursed seeing how well the three of them were getting along, offered to take their picture as a tribute of their friendship before Zephyr was going to leave the hospital. Even after light out at 9:00pm, Ion, Flint and Zephyr continued talking and having fun before they were too tired to stay awake.
The next morning came and it was kind of sad when Zephyr had to go but he promised to come back on the weekend to hang out with them again. For the next couple of days, Ion and Flint continued to have fun together, making the best of their situation. The weekend came and went, with Zephyr making good on his promise to visit them and play with them again but another sad day came for Flint when the weekend was over and Ion was released as well. Ion promised to also visit Flint every weekend as long as he was in the hospital and every time he went back for physical therapy on his now healing arm. Ion did have to have another operation on his arm to remove the plates so his bones could grow safely and had to spend another couple of days in the hospital recovering form that, where he got to hang out day and night with Flint.
When Ion fully healed and started going back to school, he too Zephyr up on his offer and started hang out with him instead of the people he once thought of as "friends" which now the picking on and bulling started happening to him. Unlike Zephyr though, who was more passive, Ion was for feisty and started getting into fights with the kids that would pick on them, mostly loosing the battles and getting in trouble even though he was mostly just defending himself. Things got a little better though when Flint was finally released from the hospital himself and got his parents to let him go to Ion's school in the city, where he was placed in his and Zephyr's class (Flint and his family are tribal and live in the outskirts of the city in their own customs).
They spent almost all their time together until the sad day when they were 14 when unfortunately Flint lost his life to his heart condition. Sadden by the untimely death of their friend, Ion and Zephyr decided to go on a journey of self discovery where they would see the world that Flint always wanted to see and become Contract Hunters in memory of their fallen friend, as Flint always wanted to become one
Sorry for the long story, just wanted to get a bit of back story on Ion and Zephyr's childhood and how they became what they are today
