Now there's a Discord!
I was feeling pretty down last night. Unmotivated, aggravated, frustrated... (Some other kinds of -ated, I'm sure.) So I just talked with
ishkee
ishkee
for a good chunk of the night. I've heard this message before, but for some reason it really sank in last night. So I reflected on my own motivations and aspirations and think I've finally started to feel comfortable with my artistic expression. I need to stop comparing my art to others and improve at my own pace.

I also need to stop rolling my eyes when I say, "my art." What I make IS art. And I don't need to qualify that in my head with statements like, "if you consider comics art" or, "sketches are technically art."

Awuh! That's so sweet, and they're right! Don't draw for a crowd. Draw for yourself, and a crowd will gather. Build it and they shall come, and all that.

With all honesty, you are one of the better artists I follow. sure everyone looks at their own art and think that it's sub-par, this is a problem most creators have and is a mark of the truly gifted. I for one think you are a blessing to the Furr community. few have the inspiration to create the stuff you do and even fewer actually have the drive to go through with it. never dought that we appreciate your hard work. Those that say otherwise are simply jealous that they don't have the skill you do. and so I Thank you  Mr. Pickleman from the bottom of my heart.
misterpickleman
5 years, 11 months ago
Thank you. :)

But, just to be fair, not everyone who's critical is jealous. There are genuine flaws that have been pointed out in less than tactful ways...

Not directing this at you, but an artist might be really good at a specific things that keeps people coming back for more, even if they're not great at drawing. Things like making nicely designed characters and stories, or really nice facial expressions.
"Better" artists can't make what you're offering. It's like food, be your own flavor and someone will be hungry for it.

Nice analogy. :D I like food!

One thing to remember is that "good art" is a subjective term, so well some may absolutely love your art some may find it decent and some may hate it outright. O and for the record I'm in the "absolutely love" boat. ^w^
misterpickleman

LOL Thank you.

Though, I imagine the "absolutely hate" crowd wouldn't be following me... :P

That's the great thing about art its not who does it or how good it looks to others, its how you use it to express yourself.
misterpickleman
5 years, 11 months ago
True. But there are a lot of times where I wish I could express myself BETTER, you know?
Th35h4d3
5 years, 11 months ago
True art doesn't have a single form, but many. A true artist shouldn't compare themselves nor their work to those of others. Everyone possesses their own strengths and weaknesses. In the words of the infamously legendary and greatest showman of all, P.T. Barnum, No one ever made a difference being like everybody else.

Only you are you. You are unique. One of a kind. There will never be another. Just keep being you.

Your friend is absolutely correct. All artists and storytellers can, and should, improve over time. But the act of creating, with the skills you have today, is how you gain those greater skills for tomorrow. You have a gift for drawing adorable, cute characters, and a style that is uniquely your own. You are also tallented at scripting stories that make your readers care about and want to see more of your characters. Keep up the great work!

There is nothing like having your own style that you love. And yes like all things that require skills... It can always be improved over time.

But GETTING that skill is the hard part...

That is just so darn beautiful, and so TRUE! I feel the same way most of the times. I wish I could give my characters a better portrayal, and have the skills of "popular" artists, but then I feel what I'm really trying to share would get diluted... Most people here just watch artists for their skill, fancy textures, how big they draw penises, superb backgrounds, but I feel that despite their admirable techniques, most of them lack soul. They are really not sharing a new world for everyone to engulf in, or the lives of their characters.

That's why I look for artists that have a story to tell. Artists that have a world to share, regardless of their skill or technique. It is often those artists who have the most unique styles, and despite they might not be at the level of "popular" artists, they exude this special kind of warmth form every piece they put out. You can feel their characters are alive and breathe. That is soul right there.

Your art has that, and despite we're very different, not only on style, concept and because you do choose draw explicit stuff (which it's totally fine. As an artist you are free to express yourself as you wish. And I respect that), I do smile every time I see your beautiful fluffies.

I think I told you before. It's their eyes? There is something about their eyes and the way they stare at you. They feel very alive. And overall the way you draw their proportions and their faces mainly. I don't know, it just makes you want to squeeze their cheeks and hug them. And that is a beautiful feeling :)

And one last thing: Again, despite we have a very different approach on our characters, the whole concept of the Airedale community is something very inspiring. Even though it is still done around taboo that we as humans have (and your characters are actually aware of that), it kind of takes you away from what it's considered the norm in a human society. I respect that 100%. Mostly because it is something I've been working for the past 17 years since I created my character's story, and it is pretty much what it's based on: Being as far away from the human society concept as possible.

Your art is really good. You  know an artist is its worst critic. Don't be so harsh on yourself :)

That was a wonderful read! Thank you, man! Really!
HassatHunter
5 years, 11 months ago
Yes yes we do.
I'm not sure who the right one is, but the left one just has nowhere near the cuteness level your art has.
It would be a thorough shame to loose out on that for something that's pretty much only "better" to you.
misterpickleman
5 years, 11 months ago
Neither one is particularly know for "cute" art. I just like how dynamic their characters are. And the line work and coloring.

You're right in that, if I were to emulate either perfectly, my art wouldn't have the life it currently has.

Pickle....man hey you are one of the only artist I've ever legit sought out and been like I want to support them hard core. (Besides a few book authors I really love but they don't do their own art....I don't think....) Anyway like you said everyone has their own style but we are in it for who you are and what you draw we enjoy it and I am just glad we will be here before you get a big ole head. XD but for real we enjoy your stuff and look forward to each and every thing you have so I hope you can feel a little of the love.

5 years, 11 months ago
Right on.  It's always nice to come across a work of art and know instantly who drew it, even from the most subtle of details.

Sometimes adhering to one style can stifle your growth as an artist, but still, I see a hundred pictures a day that are meticulously rendered, yet they all look the same and aren't at all interesting.  Be proud to offer something unique.

SkippyCoyote
5 years, 11 months ago
I think that feeling dissatisfaction with your work is just kind of the nature of being an artist. But that's okay, because the moment that you draw something that you're 100% completely satisfied with then there's nowhere left to go and nothing more to do with your art. It's dissatisfaction that keeps you practicing and improving all the time. And those folks that you look up to and wish you could draw like are no different, when they're done drawing something they see all the little imperfections and things they wish they had done better too. That's just the way it goes for artists. =)
misterpickleman
5 years, 11 months ago
I'm sure that even the artists I envy think there's something to improve in their own work... But I would look at their art and think, "If I get to that point, it'll be perfect!" Which is kinda ironic, because if (when?) I get to that point, I know I'll still think it looks terrible. :D
MillyTiger
5 years, 11 months ago
You'd be surprised P-man, I actually really rate your works and it's deffo up there for me.... Just need to dedicate time and patience to your craft but that all comes in the more you do. Art is completely subjective, there is no best. Just what people want or don't want to see.

And from the line of people commenting; I'd say you're in clearly in demand~ xx ^___^;

misterpickleman

Well, I have a tendency to make "saw blade" fur... GTHusky, on the other hand, can REALLY make some fluffy characters. :D
Autumnbear
5 years, 11 months ago
What is "good enough" for you? What's your limit? You draw with a consistent style, well-proportioned and scaled characters and backgrounds. You've given them more details, they have fur (no smooth-skinned anthros for you!), you maintain fur patterns and colours...
What really is making you think your art isn't good enough? Unless your goal is hyper-realism, or fourth-dimensional comic drawing, you've already set a standard and established your own style, which you can see has garnered a very large chunk of this community alone.
You know those old Ziggy comics? Heathcliff? The style certainly wasn't life-like or as detailed as it could be. But their unique style, and how those comics were drawn and written, gave off loveable stories and a bit of the artists personality that thousands of people came to love. I doubt Garfield would have been as popular as it was if the art style was refined more than it was. A tiny touch of naivety adds charm and uniqueness to artwork, those little faults and flaws,... and while you may see gaping chasms of self-failure and set-backs, we all see marvelous examples of indie-art, of some cool artist who is NOT trying to become a clone of other artists.
Self doubt and misery are supposed to be a part of the package deal of being an artist. <3
On a side note, those "better artists" tend not to draw creative content. They refine their art work to the point where they become scientific and soulless, and yes they do make perfect artwork,... but they somehow lose all character and connectivity to their creations in doing so. Don't get TOO good, Mr P, or your art spirit will die.
misterpickleman

That... Kinda took a really grim turn towards the end... :P
