I like to think that my characters first need to be okay with any depiction they're in, before they get posted. Also, before they get "hired", so to speak.

Interestingly, a short story I wrote about ten years ago, They characters took on a life of their own and basically told me what to write.

I ended up putting a surprising amount of thought into this and really, I don't see how you could exploit your characters, unless you wanted to be exploiting them.

Their personalities, sexuality, quirks, and ambitions are driven by an external for, their creator.

They are who you want them to be. To exploit them, you could pimp them out for $ or such, but even then unless you wanted them to feel exploited, they really wouldn't be. Thus is the nature of fiction/fantasy.

I'm hoping my semi drunk rambling makes some sense. I know my own little head cannons can run amok and feel like their own entity in their own reality, but they're not really real; and that's the clincher.

Besides, unless they're bloody good actors, all three of them seem to be comfortable and enjoying their current situation ;)

This strip is more commentary on the mindset that some people have that, even if the characters/setting/writing are all works of fiction, it's still exploitation and should be criminalized as though it were real...

There's actually several main-stream published authors who describe their character process as letting the characters right themselves. I forget exactly which author I was reading about who even said they've had characters do things in their novels that the author himself didn't want, but it was "right for the character".

I get the same feeling with my comics. For a while I was dreading having my characters do the naughty things but i guess if you establish that they DO want those things in the story then it seems okay.

It's especially rough if your original concept was to JUST be porn, but then you decided to give the characters a life...

If they were throw-away one-shot characters, then I wouldn't have any problem. But the moment I gave them names, that made it a lot more difficult.

I actually have a thought every once and a while when watching animated loops. Like what if these characters where sentient and knew what they where doing but couldn't stop...

It's just because we associate these characters as real living and give them real emotions because we see them so often we just, sort of, give them life. Don't worry man, it's a completely normal thing artists and writers go through when using the same characters for so long 😸

Dude! I TOTALLY do that, too! Especially with things like h0rs3's animations where you can get to one part and leave it looping, then come back to it an hour later and finally let them finish. :P It's like a sadistic little game...

true true. i hope you don't get over burden with this kind of thing. as you know they are fully subject to your whim and cant exist with out your whim. o.o i see how that can be a bit difficult when over thought. well as butch hartman says "art gives you power use it wisely" and i said is not Us.

the relationship of artists and their creations is interesting. you're essentially a god that created a universe where everyone is a furry that dresses partially. there could be billions of them and they all have different stories and lives. you are showing us the lives of the ones that you like from positions and point of views that you feel best presents them.
or maybe its different. maybe its an acted situation and they are just actors that know you. and maybe they are getting uncomfortable with the positions you are putting them in. and then who knows, it can be so much more than that.

It's funny you mention the actor angle... Because there have been so many different movies or comics or whatever mediums where I've imagined the characters after "shooting the scene" just kinda bullshitting by the services table. :P Like in an X-Men comic, imagine a scene with Wolverine and Magneto having a throw down. And after the fight scene, seeing the two characters (not actors, but the characters themselves) walking off set, toweling off, talking about, "this new Thai place that opened down the street..."

I know this is old art but it's my first time skimming through your stuff to catch up from when I started watching. This reminds me of a situation I had once. I used to know how to lucid dream. I would spend my evenings asleep hanging out with all sorts, people created, real, anthro, and human alike. And I had no qualms having my pick every night to sate my desires.

After doing this for several months, when I was walking through my dream one individual was crying and being held by another. This struck me off guard, I'm not really into degradation or anything like that so crying or abuse was never a turn on for me. I walked over and asked them what was going on. The one kept crying and the other that was comforting the first looked up to me. "You have your pick and your way with us every night, do you think just because we only exist in your dreams we don't have feelings too?". The one that spoke had eyes filled with rage and sadness, it shocked me so bad I bolted upright, awake with my heart pounding and a bizarre feeling of terror.

I haven't been able to have a lucid dream ever since.
