GENE: "I can't play with Tasli---he's grounded. I could collect cans with Mubba, but it's too hot outside ...but it's so boring without friends to play with"
GENE (to Mimi, on phone): "Hey, Mimi ...uh, you wanna come play Rocket League or something?"
MIMI (rueful): "Oh, Gene, I totally would, but I already told Pinky I'd meet her at the mall"
GENE (from phone): "I'm in my underwear"
MIMI (cheerily, from phone): "I'll be right over!"
GENE (slightly abashed, to self): "Which is worse: that I cast the line or that she bit?"

In retrospect, Gene is a bad subject for underwear cartoons given he's as white as his underwear.
Pencil...
The featured pencil is the 'Novia' from Eberhard Faber.
The 'Novia' pencil was made sometime in the 1930s, and came in a variety of colors (with splotch patterns). It's a fairly rare pencil with a modest collector value (Eberhard is second only to Eagle insofar as collectability).
The word 'novia' is a Spanish word meaning 'girlfriend/sweetheart'
Though Gene doesn't claim Mimi as his girlfriend, he knows Mimi wants to be with him (and Gene will sometimes use this to his advantage ...albeit, he often regrets it after).
Sleeveless, but with a collar - Mimi has style! But I think she'll feel a bit guilty, not showing up at mall. Maybe she'll manage to get Gene out instead of playing Rocket League? But then, he'll probably won't be just in his underwear...

Oh Gene... you self-deprecating boy you. He could use this to his advantage. He could put clothes on and when Mimi comes over and wonders why he's not in just underwear, he can say that he lied to just get her over there. That might work to get her off his back for a while... oooor... she'll just spend the entire time trying to get him into just his underwear. :3
