I drew this totally freeform, meaning I didn't do any undersketching. I started with the far eye and drew/placed everything around that. The pose is different from any the subject takes from the show he appeared in though the pose is fairly generic. I drew this card via a circa 1900s Milton Bradley pencil, and went over those (very light) lines with a long-ferruled 1910s pencil from Federal Pencil Co.
The subject is Sammy Skunk: a side character (possibly a one-off) from 'The Get-Along Gang' (1980s). :3 Sammy Skunk appeared in the episode 'Woolma's Birthday'.
'The Get-Along Gang' (TGAG) was a show I was aware of when I was young, but I don't have many memories of watching it. I'm fairly sure I'd seen some episodes when the series was fresh on television, as I was familiar with its theme song (and have been for as long as I can remember).
Often, when viewing a cartoon I haven't seen in twenty or thirty years, memories will return as I watch. Like, I may know what a character will say before they say it, or I'll remember a certain sequence or visual. That kind of thing. With TGAG, the theme song is all that seemed familiar to me, save Sammy here. Sammy seems somewhat familiar to me, in an 'I've seen this character before' kind of way. That doesn't mean I truly remembered him, though, but the impression was enough that I decided to make Sammy an ACO subject (and decided to just go ahead and draw him rather than wait several months ...or years). :P
My favorite TGAG characters are Zipper and Bingo. I have pencils reserved for each and will get to them ...eventually. :P
Pencil...
The featured pencil is a dandy!
The pencil was sold as an 'official' pencil of (what I'm guessing was) the 1964/65 New York World's Fair. 1964 seems like the correct date, given this Empire pencil has both the wide 'Plast-O-Cap' ferrule and the big rounded 'E' on its Empire logo (which would have been used in that time).
Either way, it's a great pencil that I thought would go well with Sammy (for those who didn't watch the cartoon, Sammy worked the haunted house at a carnival).
Having an eye for something visual involves having a talent or skill for it. Likewise one may have an ear for music or other soundy things. It is a compliment to your art.
Conversely however, this drawing started from and was based around an eye, the far eye is the seed and center of it. That's a base pun.

Nice to see you remember this character, you did an awesome job.
The Get Along Gang is the show that inspired my drawing style, along with Popples and Heathcliff & The Catillac Cats. I used to watch these shows when I was a kid. Good times. =)
Any chance to see Susie from the episode "Bingo's Pen Pal" and Dwayne (Duke) from the episode "Snowbound Showdown"?

I certainly do remember this lil guy hehe. I've watched "The Get Along Gang" a few times. Not a whole lot, but enough to know the characters & such. It's not one of my most absolute favorites, but it is a decent show I think lol.
