I am NOT joking when I say that when I first saw the (placeholder?) 'dwarfs' for the new Snow White movie, I seriously believed I was looking at something from a *Channel Awesome production, NOT something from Disney. :P
I'm not someone who goes to theaters regularly (the last movie I saw in a theater was Jurassic World 3 when it was a new release) or someone who even watches new movies (for the most part) ...but I mean it when I say if Disney doesn't make any significant changes from what they've shown us (as of writing) to the new 'Snow White', I'll make an effort to see it. I feel 2024's 'Snow White' could be the kind of spectacle that must be seen to be believed (not that I want to believe it). :P
That would be a first for me as I've not seen any of the Disney remakes, but I've heard nothing but bad about most of them (some seem FAR worse than others). :P That said, I 'almost' went to see 'The Little Mermaid' on a whim, but opted against it on the last minute.
I'd seen in my head an image of Halle Bailey standing before a wall of 'Little Mermaid' merch of various sorts, all of which boasted an image of the 'white' Ariel that Disney will NEVER change, for reasons of marketing and brand familiarity.
...which is ONE reason I didn't want to see the Halle Bailey version---I'm fine with a black mermaid, but I don't want Disney to do it because (again) Disney won't stand behind it (Disney's not about to change the appearance of their line up of 'Princesses' in any meaningful, permanent way) and (I believe) made their casting decisions for all the wrong reasons.
Now, I must mention this as the topic is brought up in almost every discussion of The Little Mermaid remake. Yes, unlike most people of my political leaning, I ...like the 'Scuttlebutt' song. ^^;
Again, I don't think the song is bad. In fact, I very much see its appeal to children. The word 'scuttlebutt' is fun to say and easy to use, yet it sounds like a word one shouldn't say ...ever (because '-butt')! It's cute, esp. (I imagine) when parents are annoyed by it! XD
That said, the song feels out of place in (what's supposedly) a blockbuster Disney-Princess movie. 'Scuttlebutt', to me, is the kind of song that would be better placed in a direct-to-video offering, such as a 'Land Before Time' sequel or somesuch (are they still making LBT sequels? Hmm...)
Gah! I'm rambling. Let's look at the pencil...
The featured pencil is the 'Snow-white' (611) from Eberhard Faber.
The pencil has a thick white 'lead', and sports the 'Diamond Star' logo (if I have may facts straight, this logo indicates the pencil was made before 1965).
I'm not into going to Theaters, mainly because movies these days have been horrible. Super Mario bros was good but that's all the good movies I've seen for five years

Now I have to go check to see if I have one of those pencils too. At one point I was trying different white pencils to see which one had the best covering / smoothest application cause I like drawing white blends. I don't know if I have one THAT old but I should check. For the record I like EF's almost as much as Prismacolor. :)

Nearly a century ago, Walt Disney had an idea of making an animated feature film, and Snow White was it. This was never done before, and it was not meant to be a comedy but a drama as well. A very big artistic risk then.
Nowadays Disney simply rehashes everything.

That short was somehow less offensive than this movie: at least the short wasn't taking itself seriously.
I didn't mention the race-swapping here because I knew Disney would do this---I'd had that hunch for years, and was so convinced of it that when it eventually happened, I didn't think to really comment on it.
The only thing that did catch me off guard was how they handled the dwarfs. I was expecting an excessively diverse cast (black, Chinese, etc., and at least one with a visible handicap), but I fully expected dwarf actors (or, at least, actors CGI'd into dwarfs). But no ...we replaced the dwarfs with persons who (at least appear) to be average in height, etc. And all because 'Dinky Peter' (sorry, that's the name Ive given him) didn't want to see dwarfs in the movie. :P
I'm very confused by all this. Like, I'm unsure who these movies are meant to appeal to.
This may sound bad, but hear me out. Let's pretend I'm a movie producer and I am absolutely convinced the world (esp. America) is racist, homophobic, misogynistic, and generally bigoted. If I really and truly felt that way, and if my goal was to make money, wouldn't my movie be just a white-cast, hetero-normative, guy-saves-the-princess movie? I mean, as I can see the wrong in appealing to these ideas, but that wouldn't be the point: Hollywood and big corporations typically aren't esp. ethical or moral to start with.
Disney knows it's pissing people off, but not because Disney believes they're racist or whatever. I dunno the true reason, but it's not to better the world.

Appeal? They're not meant to appeal to anyone. They just expect people to give them money.because they're Disney and they released a movie. Not even a new movie, just a worse, rehashed version of an already released one. The audience is supposed to shut up, pay the price, and cheer after the finale, and shout "thank you, may we have another", but to be honest, after they pay, what they do is irrelevant.

There are very few brands I'm loyal to ...off top of my head, Lego is the only one I can think of (and only insofar as I don't mix Lego with off-brand pieces---I rarely make any Lego purchases).

Another example is Studebaker. Back during the 1800s, they were a worldwide renowned builder of horse drawn coaches, elite carriages and utility wagons. They even made farm equipment along with some of the highest quality plows, shovels, rakes, hoes, picks, axes, etc. Sometime after automobiles came into being in the 1890s, that began putting makers of horse drawn vehicles out of business. However, the family that owned Studebaker Company had the foresight to switch away from making horse drawn vehicles and begin making automobiles. Thus that kept them in business well into the 20th Century. During World War 2, Studebaker even made engines for the B-17 bombers.
But as most of us know, sometime around 1964, Studebaker went out of business with their last automobile assembly plant located in Canada.

Purchasing the failing Packard Motor Company in the late 1950s was probably one of those bad decisions.
Once Studebaker acquired Packard, beginning in the 1958 model year, Packard was nothing more than a Studebaker Hawk with a low, wide grill. They looked nothing like the original Packards.

So, they're complaining Disney modernized Snow White? Funny, Disney already changed the original fairy tale. Many of the original fairy tales adapted by Disney decades ago were modified when adapted into animated features. Having said this, that doesn't mean this modernization of Snow White couldn't turn out to be awful. I'd need to see it for myself to make a judgment on that.

Well, of course Disney isn't going to portray Snow White as a minor, etc. :P
I don't remember the original story (or if I've even read it), but usually the girl was 12 or 14 or so in these sorts of stories (back when the average person didn't live past 40 lol)

Speaking of atrocities...it wouldn't surprise me for Disney script writers to toss around the following idea:
"
Once upon a time on a snowy day, Snow White decided to go out for a cruise in her rocket powered sleigh. Upon reaching supersonic speeds, her rocket powered sleigh went out of control and crashed. Though the sleigh exploded into a thousand pieces, Snow White survived, but in a coma. Hours later, the seven smurfs found Snow White and took her to their cottage where it was safe and warm. "What can we do for her?", a smurf asked. Papa Smurf then consulted his big book of fairytales. "Ah. Here it is", Papa Smurf declared. "All we have to do is find the prince who was turned into a frog, and have him kiss her. That will awaken Snow White, and at the same time turn the frog back into a handsome prince". "Sounds romantic", the smurfs agreed. Come spring when the frogs came out of hibernation, the smurfs found the frog prince. Straightway they took the frog to their cottage and had him kiss Snow White. "Oops. Uh-oh. This didn't go as planned", Papa Smurf declared. Snow White awoke from her coma alright. But instead things going like Papa Smurf's big book of fairytales said it would, the frog prince remained as a frog, and Snow White was turned into a frog as well. Thus the two frogs lived at the pond, singing and eating flies, and lived happily ever after.
The End

I was thinking I'd be forced to delete this one, so I didn't put real effort in---I just wanted to jab the production. ^^
Whenever I make an opinion comic like this, it's uncertain how it'll be received. So far, the only one that was responded negatively to was Vix's Cub (but, again, one never knows).
