BOOK RE-VIEW: Rudolph Saves the Sprites
Gene and Mimi are sitting on a wall, watching the sun set behind the McDonald's ...but it seems Mimi's getting sleepy.

GENE: "The McDonald's is pretty at night"

MIMI (drowsy): "Yeah"

*Mimi snuggles up on Gene's reluctant shoulder; Gene smiles---Mimi's his friend and Gene's glad he can be a help as her pillow (it's kinda cute, Gene thinks)*

Does Gene 'like' Mimi? It would seem so, but only tenuously; time will tell.

Anyway...

I don't plan the arrangement of these comics---I just draw them ...and because I'm bad at art, I sometimes draw without thinking, thus explaining why the last panel is so small and crushed.

Now, it seems I'm complaining, but I'm not. I mean, if I were good at art I would ...Um ...I mean, I'd probably...

Gee, how would I be different, except in positive ways? :p

Well, ok, I wasn't complaining before ...and I'm still not---I'm fine with what I have and how I have it (contentment is a real treasure). :3

Anyway, this comic exists only because I wanted to post this McDonald's photo on InkBunny ...because it's among my favorites from my photo gallery (yes, I took the picture; I took it in January of 2020). :3

I don't think this is really an issue of artistic skill. Every panel looks great, everyone is on-model the expressions are great in that you can look at them not read the speech bubbles and you know everything you need to know, and even the last panel you managed to make work with such limited space. That has nothing to do with poor artistic ability.

This is more an issue of layout, and its easily solved without any change in your artistic abilities. You could just have subdivided it into three equal parts first and then created your drawing. Its already clear you know how to scale your art as necessary given the last panel. Alternatively plan the sequence and decide which one you want to have the most emphasis. I think it makes sense that the middle one is the most important. In one image it sums up Gene and Mimi's relationship.

In more general terms this is an issue with all art. Its winging it and being spontaneous versus carefully planning things out. For example currently I'm writing a furry themed novel. I could have just started writing with no idea where the story was going or what it was really about. Instead I spent several months plotting out the major events of the story long before I wrote the first chapter. Now I at least have a road map even if details still needed to be worked out along the way. I also know that the story makes sense from beginning to end and I have some idea of the scope of the project, etc.

There is something to be said about a certain amount of figuring it out as you go. Often more fleshed out ideas only start to develop as you begin the logistics of the final product. But I think it's generally good advice to have some idea what your doing before hand.

I think GRR Martin serves as a good cautionary tale to the make it up as you go approach. He began writing Game of Thrones in 1991 ... 30 years ago. He is now 5 novels in at 1,700k words and fans have been waiting on book 6 for the last 10 years. Its a great example of the Kudzu plot. Instead of resolving the main plot threads that have become increasingly complex and tangled, GRRM has opted to instead constantly increase the complexity adding new characters and plot lines with every installment (because that's obv more fun than untangling a mess). This just becomes a viscious cycle. The end result may very well be that book 6 never gets published and he passes away before completing his magnum opus.

Does this mean GRRM is not a talented writer? That he's not good at "writing". No. He is very good. In fact too good for his own good. If he could just have held back some of that creative impulse he probably would have finished his series a decade or more ago and it could have still been epic and some of the best fantasy novels of all time. Now he runs the risk of being remembered as the guy who never finished his masterpiece. If you will, he's metaphorically squeezing the "last panel" ...

Talent is great but a little planning can turn even a mediocre talent into a "good writer" and presumably that applies in any creative endeavor. Remember no one needs to know how much work went into the planning. Its the final product ppl care about.

Sorry for the soapbox comment :p

Hopefully though I've properly fleshed out my main point. Its not about talent. Its just about planning.

You spent more time and thought on that comment than I did on the art. lol

(yes, that was my reply; I read all, of course, but short replies/'read receipts' are my forte).

But those aren't replies, they're apologies for using up InkBunny's server space, as well providers of context so no one will think the picture is upside-down or mistake it for a cow. ^^

Zivrshka said everything about the art. I'd add The X Files to the GRR pile, and Lost. Both wrote themselves into a can of worms that couldn't be nicely resolved.

All that aside, a date watching the sun go down? It's a pity they didn't buy a burger to enjoy with the show.

The cubs cannot often afford such things, besides, it's likely they filled up on crawfish earlier. ^^

They should listen to Mubba, he'll tell you you can often find great treats in the dumpsters out back.

If the McDonald's also has a McCafe inside, they can get a hot chocolate for their way home. There they can enjoy some nice Semolina porridge ;3

I don't know man, your rendition of the McDonald's establishment was pretty good... it's just like the real thing. ;3

But enough about me McRibbing on you lol. I live where there's a lot of street lights everywhere so a nice beautiful sunset is stifled by all that artificial light. What can I say about those two... I guess they're "lovin it" lol. Mimi pulled the trigger a long time ago, Gene just has to find the will to pull his own.

You really should make a T-shirt with "We are our own biggest critic" on the front and "But that's still not going to stop me" on the back. Your art style is fine. Big cells or small cells, they're all equally great.

Once when it was really cold out and I had forgotten my gloves, I walked into this McDonald's and bought two McChicken sandwiches. I placed the sandwiches in my coat pockets, to keep my hands warm. ^^

for most kids, going to Mcdonalds is a dream that comes true, it was for me and I still love it!

It was a rarity for me, albeit, Pizza Hut was (for a while) an almost weekly thing. ^^

Today, I live not far from a McDonald's. Most recently, I bought an 'Adult Happy Meal' (they have those now) for the box.

I live close to a Mcondalds as well, never was a fan of Pizza hut. Sadly, to get there, I have to walk up a very steep hill!

The climbing of the hill is good for the heart, and may push out some grease ...actually, it doesn't work that way, but would be great if it did. :o
