Is Gene a badly designed character?
Short answer: yes
Long answer:
All famous, iconic characters are recognized by their silhouette ...Gene is a blob ...and I drew his tail too low. :p
I tried another redesign, hoping the shape of the hat (which is a cat) would make Gene recognizable ...nope!
I can draw characters (sorta-kinda), but I'm no designer. :(
What about poses?
Gene wants to play with Tasli. Gene's gonna reach into his hat to pull Tasli out, but Tasli doesn't want to be in this cartoon (I don't blame him).
The pose is realistic, but is stilted---it's not dynamic or fun to look at.
Taking full advantage of the fact that Gene is a cartoon by super-exaggerating his pose ...doesn't help. :p
I really don't know how to use exaggeration effectively in cartooning.
Colors?
Purple and orange ...I'm sure it's wrong somehow.
All that said, Gene can be drawn in different poses---he's cute (I guess) and can be rotated.
With my right hand on my granddaddy's King James Bible: I am NOT saying Gene is designed well, but he can be sufficient for dumb comics on InkBunny. Gene is a 'budget' character: he's easy to draw and (again) can be drawn from different angles and so forth.
I give Gene a 4/10. :3
