Is Gene a badly designed character?

Short answer: yes

Long answer:

All famous, iconic characters are recognized by their silhouette ...Gene is a blob ...and I drew his tail too low. :p

I tried another redesign, hoping the shape of the hat (which is a cat) would make Gene recognizable ...nope!

I can draw characters (sorta-kinda), but I'm no designer. :(

What about poses?

Gene wants to play with Tasli. Gene's gonna reach into his hat to pull Tasli out, but Tasli doesn't want to be in this cartoon (I don't blame him).

The pose is realistic, but is stilted---it's not dynamic or fun to look at.

Taking full advantage of the fact that Gene is a cartoon by super-exaggerating his pose ...doesn't help. :p
I really don't know how to use exaggeration effectively in cartooning.

Colors?

Purple and orange ...I'm sure it's wrong somehow.

All that said, Gene can be drawn in different poses---he's cute (I guess) and can be rotated.

With my right hand on my granddaddy's King James Bible: I am NOT saying Gene is designed well, but he can be sufficient for dumb comics on InkBunny. Gene is a 'budget' character: he's easy to draw and (again) can be drawn from different angles and so forth.

I give Gene a 4/10. :3

If he's easy for you to work with and understand, I wouldn't say he's poorly designed <3

By that logic, a sick figure or punctuation emote is good design. :3

Nah, your character looks better than a stick figure!

Should we start a collection of points, so that Gene can get closer to 10/10? We already got your 4, i'll give a couple more, who wants to join? Points for Gene! ;)

OK, more seriously, though - I'm quite impressed with the dynamic action pose - you've said many, many times that you can't draw, and then you pull out a Chuck Jones-like stop frame drawing? I feel surprised. Astonished. And a little bit jealous :o

However, I feel I'm too old to like the "gluten free" design similar to many contemporary cartoons. It lacks the certain "oomph".

(Also - cute Gene in the corner is cute!)

Mubba brought Gene a cactus, so he has many points now ...not the kind to up his score, but beggars can't be choosers. :3

Thx. :3

I dislike contemporary cartoons myself, but they are designed well from a pick-them-out-in-a-crowd/instant-recognizability perspective.

Nah, I honestly don't think he's poorly designed. There's always room for improvement, but I think he's adorable as he currently looks. I mean, yeah I could always improve my art style if I wanted to. But I like the style I use right now, and I'm content with that. And I don't feel the need to improve.

Gene is always a cutie to me :3

lol

The cat hat might be alive. The opening can change shape to convey its emotions (like a mouth).

Nobody cares about you chose bad colors for your Gene or that his silhouette is not super correct.
Gene is one the most adorable furry characters I know in the furry art community and trust me, I've been here for a while. Your character design is great.

I just worry, sometimes, and wonder why I do things. At my age, one values their time.

You do them cause you stick to them, they are part of you. Like why Am I a furry? Jsut that's what I am, I will be on in 80 years old as well. Also , remember that the classic cartoons were also created and drawn by adult people of your age :3

lol Well, they were paid, talented animators who knew they were creating history/drawing childhoods---I'm just furry trash. ^^

XD But I understand---yeah, I kinda like having a platform for my pencil scratchings; some watchers have been very sincere with me in how they feel about my work. Alas, I cannot share in their enthusiasm/appreciation (that's the only thing).

P.S. Do not draw him like you did on the top right... It looks like modern cartoons which is a offense to Gene, your art and my nostalgic soul x3

Recognizable by their shiloutte?

*Stares in anime*

I think that reduces it down too much, removes too much detail. I think a lot of 'recognizable' charqacters got that way by being shoved down people's throats. People know the shiloutte of pikachu, but what about spinda?

I dub the gluten-free variant Bean Gene. He can have his own show where he travels the world extolling the virtues of legumes. (Why? Because SOMEONE has to!) His animation quirk can be that his tail always matches his mouth shape. Get to it, Netflix!

Mr. Bean Genes!

Basically, what inspired this upload was a YouTube Video, specifically this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wm9ti-gzLM

After watching, I took it as an excuse to bash my art, because none of what they said rang as untrue.

Another video mentioned Chris Hart books, and how they are bad for the beginning artist. Well, if you recall my 'Hartvark' upload, then you know I like Hart's work ...of course I would, because it's wrong.

Note I said this here about Gene's colors,

"Purple and orange ...I'm sure it's wrong somehow"

They are wrong because they looked good to me: a person who is defaultly wrong.

And before you say it's all meaningless subjectivity, the persons saying these things have nothing to prove: one, in fact, was a Disney character designer. If you cannot take their word as authority on this matter, then whose can you? :3

Having nothing to prove CAUSES meaningless subjectivity. I figure most of this stuff is utter rot. Good Lord, Disney. Where they do things the 'right' way down to the nanometer. Where they have focus groups and a guy whose job it is to come up with movie titles that will maximize profits and engagement and minimize any possible offense to anyone.

I can get the 'Try not to do these things, they're hard or disliked by the majority of people' but it's a thin line between that and 'Your art falls outside of parameters and is thus wrong.' Nuts to the lot of them and espescially their 'This sucks because it's widespread' fluffery.

*pats Gene*

How can you possibly tell that face he's wrong?

I will have to admit, first of all, that it was Gene who actually got me hooked into your small comic series as well as your art style. Gene, to me, kind of reminds me of a cross between Topcat and the Aristocats. And while always drawn with your many pencils, there's always been something about him that, shall I say and pun intended, draws me to him.

To me, I think he's a cute young lad; and while he might be the easiest character for you to draw, sometimes the easy ones are all that it takes. In fact, there's no character that you have drawn that I have not liked.

As someone most famous said time and time again... "I like you just the way you are." And that's absolutely true about Gene. :3
