Gene and Tasli look up at the split sky.
GENE: "The sky looks weird"
TASLI: "Yeah. Let's go home"
MUBBA: "Hey! You guys wanna play!?"
GENE: "Not now, Mubba. Maybe Later"
TASLI: "What he said"
MUBBA (suppressing disappointment): "Oh? Ok. See ya!"
MUBBA (to self): "'Maybe later'"

The next day...
MIMI: "Mubba, why'd you bring me to the train track?"
MUBBA: "Because I have a penny I want to flatten!"
MIMI: "Fun! But let's hurry; the train can be dangerous!"
MUBBA: "Especially for those with a long tail. But you don't have that problem!"
MIMI: "Rude!"
MUBBA (sheepish): "Oof! Sorry"
MUBBA: But, hey, Gene said he might play with me later! Maybe Tasli, too!"
MIMI: "You've told me thrice already"
MUBBA: "Do you think it's been enough 'later'?"
MIMI: "Only one way to find out!"

The four meet up.
MUBBA (to Gene and Tasli): "Hey, guys! What're you up to?"
GENE: "We're going to the catfish pond to catch supper"
MUBBA (excited): "I can come, too, right? You said 'later', and it's later now!"
GENE (suppressing annoyance): "Chill out, dude! You can come!"
MIMI (sweetly, to Gene): "I'll meet you at the pond, after I change into something I don't mind getting so dirty. Just please be nice to Mubba, ok?"
GENE: "Well, of course!"
MIMI (smartly): "That goes double for you, Tasli!"
TASLI (to self): "Don't point your finger at me, Miss Manners---I'm not your boyfriend; I'll do what I please!"
4.
GENE: "Ever been catfishing before, Mubba?"
MUBBA (dubious): "No, but I can learn, maybe"
MUBBA (suddenly distracted): "O-M-Gee! The lock's gone---and it's full!"
GENE (calling): "What are you thinking, Mubba! Get out of there!"
TASLI (to Gene): "That kid's loopy, I say!"
(Mubba riffles through the dumpster)
TASLI (to Gene): "I dare ya to shut the door!"
5.
GENE: "I don't want to"
TASLI: "Because you're weak for Mimi"
GENE: "Because I'm over it---we're not bullies, Tasli! And we shouldn't be jerks, either!"
(Tasli acquiesces)
GENE (cooly): "Let's be cool, ok?"
MUBBA (from the dumpster): "Hety, guys! I found something neat! ...Wanna see?"
6.
MUBBA: "It's a laser pointer. Its strap is broken, but it still lights up!"
So concludes the first half of our story. When we revisit the cubs, everyone will be at the catfish pond.
