THURSDAY, AUGUST 4th, 1960
It was twenty minutes before seven o'clock in the morning when Al, Marge and the cubs began having breakfast. Their Zenith black & white TV was tuned in to KSWS-TV Channel 8, which was presently giving the weather report. According to the meteorologist on TV, that Thursday was going to be a pleasant day. The meteorologist did continue though;

" ...But for this coming Saturday hold onto your hats, folks. We are expecting gusty winds as this air flow system you see on the map here begins to move toward our area over the next two days...

"Awright!", Rex proclaimed. "We still have our kites from back in March".
"Yea, but my kite got caught up in that pookey ole tree...Remember?", Donna mentioned.
"You shouldn't of tugged it though. That's what broke it up", oldest brother Jed told Donna. "One of us could have climbed up and got it for you".
"You cubs should have been flying those kites out on the desert beyond the edge of town like your dad and I told you to do", Marge added. "There's lots of open space for kites out there".
"That's right. You cubs are lucky one of those kites didn't tangle into a power line", Al added after taking a sip of coffee (their favorite brand, Wilkins coffee).
It was only four months earlier in early April that Jed, Rex, Clarence and Donna flew their kites from one of the streets there in Duran, and that's how Donna's kite got caught up in a tree.
"That tree's still a pookey ole kite eater", Donna retorted, knowing the W. M. Hindi store there in Duran sells kites only from late February to early April.
"I'll let you take turns using mine this Saturday", Clarence offered to Donna.
"You can still make a kite", Al assured Donna. "They're easy to make".
"I saw Ryan Lynx make a kite once", Jed mentioned. "We can go see him about making one".
"Good idea", Marge commended.
That idea was a relief to Donna now that she won't have to do without having her own kite this coming Saturday.
"They have me on the repair detail for the time travel machine today.", Al mentioned. "They told me yesterday a few more problems arose where my expertise would be of help".
"How bad of problems?", Marge asked.
"Nowhere near like they had been before from what they tell me", Al replied. "Just minor ones. But new ones seem to appear as fast as they get the existing ones fixed".
"When Clarence returns to 2018, isn't his correct place in time later than when he left?", Marge asked, then mentioned, "At least that's what I understand from what I once heard in a conversation at the lab".
"I think I know what you're saying, Marge. And that is correct", Al replied. "For every month, day, minute and second Clarence is with us in this day and time, where he goes back to the 21st Century has to be that same amount of time later than February 9th when he left 2018".
"There's a reason I'm bringing this up, Al", Marge said. "According to what you're telling me, if the time machine isn't repaired before school begins for the '60 '61 year, Clarence won't make it back to the 21st Century soon enough to begin the 2018 2019 school year in his day and time".
"You are right", Al replied to Marge. "It was on the...Or will be in the future, that Clarence's departure from 2018 would be on the morning of February 9th. And he arrived on the same month, day and same time of day here in 1960. What ever day and time of day he leaves 1960 will have to be the same month, day and time of day he arrives back to the 21st Century. Of course, the day of arrival in the machine would have to be set for an extra day because of 1960 being a leap year".
"Would adding that extra day put Clarence off a day ahead on the calendar in 2018 though?", Marge asked.
"A calendar is not time itself. It's only a measurement of time", Al explained to Marge. "The same amount of physical days Clarence is with us in 1960 has to be the same amount of physical days to expire during Clarence's absents from 2018, regardless of what a calendar says...1960 is a leap year. 2018 will not be a leap year".
"Yea, we go back to school next month", Jed mentioned, then surmised. "So I guess if Clarence leaves this day and time after school begins, he'll get back to 2018 after school begins in that day and time too".
"Aww gee, I wish summer could have been longer", Rex exclaimed.
"Yea, where did all the time go?", Donna asked.
"Oh yea. Time", Rex jested in reference to the time machine, followed by the other cubs chuckling".
"Well as they say, time flies when you're having fun", Marge said to Rex, then told the cubs, "Your dad and I are having an important conversation. So let's try to keep the interruptions to a minimum. Okay?".
"We've already discussed that scenario at the lab", Al said to Marge. "And we all came to the conclusion that when we enroll Jed, Rex and Donna in the '60 '61 school year, that we should enroll Clarence also...just in case the machine is still not working".
"That means Clarence will be in the 4th grade with me?", Rex gleefully asked. "Like it was when we were in the 3rd grade together in Mrs. Glenda Otter's class?".
"4th grade will be Mrs. Wanda Bear's class", Jed mentioned.
"Well hopefully, we can get the time machine operational soon enough so Clarence won't miss any of the coming school year in his day and time", Al added.
"I'm gonna miss Clarence when he goes back", Donna said.
"I will too", Rex agreed.
"We'll all miss Clarence", Marge added.
"I'll miss you all too", Clarence said to everyone. "But I do want to be with my actual mom and dad, and brother and sister again".
"I can't blame you there, Son", Al replied to Clarence.
Jed added, "You know...By now it feels like Clarence has always been a member of our family from the beginning".
"It does", Rex agreed. "When the time machine is finally fixed, it's gonna feel like we lost a brother".
"Well you have to understand", Al mentioned to Jed and Rex. "Clarence's rightful place in time is in the 21st Century with his original family".
"Any of us who are still around by the 21st Century will see Clarence again, and get to meet his original family", Marge assured the cubs.
"We'll be 58 years older by then", Donna acknowledged. "Ain't that right?".
"Isn't that right", Marge corrected her 6 year old daughter. "Not ain't...Anyway, we won't have to quite wait until we're 58 years older. Clarence will be born in the year 2010. That's 8 years sooner".
"Back in February or March, when ever that was", Al mentioned to the cubs, "Your mother and I did promise Clarence that we would become acquainted with his parents before the time he's born".
"Wow!", Rex exclaimed. "We'll get to know Clarence since the time he's a new born babycub".
"Awww, that will be so cute", Donna said as Clarence felt a bit bashful.
"It does feel weird that this is a time that I'm not born yet", Clarence mentioned, then pondered, then asked Al, "So, Dad...Do I exist after 2010 yet being I'm here in 1960 now".
"It doesn't work the way you've asked that question, Son", Al answered Clarence, then explained, "You see...In this day and time, the 21st Century hasn't happened yet. It's still yet in the future. Now by the time the 21st Century gets here, everything we see going on around us now will be in the past and over with. So to answer your question, it isn't a matter of, do you exist yet after 2010. It's actually, you will exist once 2010 gets here, future tense...Now to explain furthermore, you now exist here in 1960. And you will in the future exist in 2010 and the years to follow. But how you will exist depends on what happens in the near future beyond this day and time".
"How is that?", Clarence asked.
"Well I'm about to finish explaining that", Al answered Clarence, then continued, "If in the near future we get the time machine repaired, and you get back to your rightful day and time, you will have been born in 2010 like it always will be...However...If for some reason the time machine is unrepeatable, your rightful place in time will then be growing up through the 1960s as one of our family members. You would become an adult in the year 1970...If that were to be the case, by the time 2010 got here, you won't be born in that day and time because you already exist. The time continual will have altered itself by then to where you never were a member of your original family to begin with".
"That last part sounds kinda sad", Clarence acknowledged, then mentioned, "But I guess I understand what you're sayin' ".
Marge somewhat jested, "Well, this is the mind of a scientist explaining something in depth to the mind of an 8 year old cub".
"I don't think it went over my head", Clarence said to Marge. "Not completely anyway".
"What of the time machine itself, Dad. If it's not able to be fixed?", Jed asked Al. "Will there be two of them in 1970 when it's due to get built?"
"All I can tell you on that one is, according to some of the theories I've heard at the lab, it's most likely if this time machine is still around by 1970, it will be refurbished instead of a new one being built, being that it already exists", Al answered Jed. "Theory has it though, if Horizon Innovations does have us build a new one from the ground up, it would not be the same time machine as this one is".
"And provided that Clarence does make it back to 2018 in the time machine, then the time machine that will be built in 1970 will be the same one Clarence took back to 2018?", Jed asked.
"Exactly", Al replied. "Because once the time machine carries Clarence back to 2018, the machine will be a thing of the future, and will no longer exist until it gets built in 1970".
While everyone was still at the dining table having conversation as their Zenith black and white TV in the living room was still tuned in on KSWS-TV Channel 8... Then, shortly before seven o'clock, an election campaign ad aired for Johan F. Kendon Otter for president. And it was quite a catchy jingle at that.

"I like that little jingle they got", Marge mentioned as The Captain Kangaroo Show began to come on following the campaign ad.
"With what Clarence told us he knows, I'm happy to know Kendon Otter will be out next president", Al said as the Captain Kangaroo theme song could be heard from the TV...hosted by an anthro-kangaroo of course.

"I just wish there was a way we could tell everyone not to let Kendon Otter get shot three years from now", Donna lamented as she was taking glances at The Captain Kangaroo Show coming on from in the dining room.
"Yea, that's gonna be a royal shaft", Jed remarked.
"And how", Rex added.
"Remember we did discuss that with the other scientists at the lab before", Al reminded the cubs. "You do know what Clarence told us is information from the future. To take action on an occurrence as major as that one will be based on information from the future could possibly cause a catastrophic disruption in the time continual".
"Remember. You cubs are to never mention a word of it to anyone", Marge warned the cubs.
"They wouldn't believe it anyway if you did try to tell them", Al added, then went on to ask, "And when the day comes he does get assassinated, who do you think the FBI and Secret Service are going to come after?".
"The ones who said he was going to get shot", Marge told the cubs.
By now, it was pretty clear to the cubs that a situation under these particular circumstances is best left alone.
After breakfast and a while of leisurely conversation, and as The Captain Kangaroo Show was nearing it's conclusion for that morning, Al noticed the time was 7:28.
"Seven twenty-eight already. I'll have to be leaving for work now", Al said as he got up from the table.
"But isn't the time machine only a few miles up the highway?", Rex asked. "Why so soon?"
"I have to go to the lab complex first", Al replied to Rex. "Since the tail end of Woodrow Raccoon's car was visible to the highway three days ago, we all agreed to take the company vehicles out there from now on".
"Remember when Donna noticed Woodrow's car from behind the rock formation when we were out taking pictures the day we saw the car wreck?", Marge asked Rex.
"Yea, I know that", Rex replied. "I just didn't know they decided to go back to using the Falcon and the panel truck".
"We decided that everyone driving their own cars to the time machine site would make for too many cars out there", Al said just before he and Marge hugged each other like they always do before Al leaves for work.
Just before Al got out the front door, Marge asked, "Is the trip to the hobby shop still a go this evening?".
"It still is", Al replied as he paused at the front door. "Nothing's going late at the lab tonight".
As the cubs cheered, Rex proclaimed, "Oh boy! Were running slot car tonight!"
"Those are so cool. And my car looks Dad's car", Clarence said also in reference to his slot car being a toy replica of a 1960 Chrysler 300.
"I bet my car beats yours this time", Jed challenged Rex.
"We'll see about that", Rex replied. "Mine is a Chevy. Remember?".
Truth is, only the bodies of those slot cars are different...The motors and chassis are all the same made by Strombecker Toy Manufacturing Corporation.
The cubs, including Donna, got a laugh when Donna remarked, "And if there's any little mummies on the track who live in pyramids, we're gonna chase 'em with our cars".
Once the cubs settled down from laughing, Al reminded Marge, "Don't forget, we promised to invite Tabetha and Pete Skunk and their cubs with us".
"Just give me a call before you leave the lab this evening so I know when to phone them", Marge replied.
"Are Gail and Denny riding in our new station wagon with us?", Jed asked.
"We thought we'd treat them to that", Al answered as Marge agreed.
"Ya better keep an eye on Gail though", Donna said. "She gets naughty".
"Yea, she does", Rex added as the other cubs giggled.
"Well if Gail tries to pull any shenanigans, we'll promptly address it", Marge assured the cubs.
Al and Marge then bid each other, "See you", and "Love ya", after which, Al went out to the Chrysler 300 and took off for the Horizon Innovations Laboratory complex where he works.

After the 20 minute drive to the lab complex on the north edge of Encino, Al Coyote was greeted by Woodrow Raccoon and Harold Wolf after he keyed in his access code and entered the building where he works.
"Good morning, Al", Woodrow greeted as Harold gave a nod.
"Good morning to you too", Al greeted Woodrow and Harold.
"We could sure use your help today, Al", Harold Wolf said, followed by briefing Al on some of the minor situations they were encountering with the time machine.
Woodrow Raccoon interjected, "The problems are not the major obstacles we've had to deal with in the past, but it seems now these smaller problems are more numerous".
"So I have been told", Al replied.
Harold Wolf then told Al more in detail of how the problematic situation with the time machine seemed to sometimes follow a particular pattern. And from what Harold Wolf explained, and Woodrow Raccoon verified, a fair share of what needs to be diagnosed is within Al Coyote's fields of expertise...Al would be a very valurable member on the repair crew for the next few days.
Also coming out to the time machine site would be Lenard Wolverine, who would occasionally complain about "that little coyote cub who in the future didn't know how to listen to those who say to leave stuff alone".
And Greg Otter was coming out to the site that day also...There were also some things about those problems with the time machine that would require his fields of expertise as well.
Once the five scientists concluded their briefing on the situation with the time machine, and gathered the instruments and equipment needed, they made their way out to the company owned 1960 Ford Falcon and the 1957 Ford panel truck.
"We made good progress over the past couple of weeks", Woodrow Raccoon said to Al Coyote and Greg Otter as the instruments and equipment were being loaded into the panel truck. "Though we can all still hope today goes better than it did over the past few days".
"We have a good team here", Harold Wolf boasted as he placed a cooler of ice water (an Igloo brand galvanized metal cooler back in the day) and a box of drinking cups aboard the truck. "I'm confident the repair efforts will get better".
"Well they have been compared to what they were a few months ago", Lenard Wolverine added.
After everything was loaded, Harold Wolf mentioned, "I'll drive the panel truck", as he got in behind the wheel, and Woodrow Raccoon got in on the passenger's seat.
"Greg. You want to drive?", Al Coyote asked as they and Lenard Wolverine made their way to the Falcon.
"Don't mind if I do", Greg Otter replied just before he got in behind the wheel of the Falcon.
Lenard Wolverine got in back so he can lounge across the rear seat, and Al Coyote got in on the front passenger's seat. Then the drivers of both vehicles started the engines, and they were on their way out to the time machine landing site off of Highway 54, with the Harold Wolf and Woodrow Raccoon leading the way in the panel truck.
It was a short way down Highway 285 to Highway 60, being that the main lab complex was on the northren outskirts of Encino. Then it was eastbound on Highway 60 for 18 miles.
In the midst of the conversation in the Falcon along Highway 60, Lenard Wolverine mentioned, "This car's not bad at all for such a little car as it is".
"I checked the gas mileage when I was sent to run an errand in it two months ago", said Greg Otter. "It's gets a little over 26 miles to the gallon".
"Quite impressive", Al Coyote replied, then admitted, "But I'd never trade my Chrysler 300 for it though".
"I'd keep my Buick too", Lenard Wolverine added referring to his '59 Buick, then got a laugh from Al and Greg when he mentioned, "A Falcon would be right up Poindexter Fox's alley though".
Al and Greg agreed with Lenard, being that Poindexter drives a '56 Nash Ambassador.
Before long, they were approaching where Highway 60 T-intersects with Highway 54.
After they went over the Southern Pacific railroad crossing and stopped before turning south on Highway 54, Al pointed out a stretch of vacant land beyond Highway 54 and mentioned, "From what Clarence told Marge and I, that's where the home of his family and him will be 50 years from now".
"So that's where the little buggar will be born and raised", Lenard Wolverine said, then admitted, "It does look like a nice spot for a rural home though".
Once the panel truck and the Falcon headed south on Highway 54, it was only several miles, then shortly after passing the county line out of Guadalope County into Torrance County, they were approaching the time machine landing site.
Harold Wolf, driving the panel truck, made sure there were no other cars in sight before pulling off the highway and behind the rock formation that hides the utility building from the highway. Behind the rock formation, both drivers made sure to park the vehicles so they can't be seen from the highway as they pulled up to the utility building that was built months ago to conceal the time machine.
"Well...Another day to go at it", Harold Wolf mentioned as he unlocked the pad locks and raised the roll up doors which were on three sides of the building, thus revealing the time machine.
Greg Otter got the keys from the dash of the Falcon to open the trunk so he and Lenard Wolverine can get the many sheets of technical drawings, as Al Coyote, Woodrow Raccoon and Harold Wolf carried the instruments and equipment from the panel truck to the time travel machine. Afterward, the crew wasted no time continuing the repair efforts to the machine.
Some of the problems seemed to be caused by parts and components that were not yet already completely bad to begin with, but were in weakened condition due to Clarence's journey to 1960. When ever a system was repaired in which a weakened component was integral to, it would cause the weakened component to go out all the way (weakest link in the chain so to speak), thus causing that complete system to fail again.
Lenard Wolverine even mentioned an analogy to it, "These weakened parts that don't fail until a system is fixed reminds me of a car engine with high miles on it that needs a valve job".
"I see what you mean, Lenard", Harold Wolf replied, also being familiar with automobiles. "If you only rebuild the valves on one, the rings soon go bad".
"And these weakened components in this machine are being affect the in the same way", Woodrow Raccoon reaffirmed.
Most of those problems though were by now very easy to track down and diagnose. Once a culprit component was identified, it was often an easy fix with other components that did exist back in the day. However, there were still some components that were of post 1960 technology, thus it had to be tediously back-engineered and improvised for by means of building a small assembly consisting of electronic tubes.
Later into the morning, Lenard Wolverine was having difficulty tracking down a problem with the machine's Time Duration Metering System...That's the system in which the machine senses how far to go through time before stopping at the intended time destination it was preset for...It's to the time machine what an odometer and trip meter are to an automobile.
Of course in 1960, the design work of the Time Duration Metering System was not yet completed, thus they only had their own partially completed technical data to go on. Lenard Wolverine even had to get help from Woodrow Raccoon on this one. Eventually Harold Wolf had to pull off from what he was working on to assist Lenard and Woodrow.
Al Coyote, with assistance from Greg Otter were also having difficulty...It was diagnosing a wave osculation issue associated with the machine's Navtrac Guidance System.
"You see. This doesn't make any sense", Al Coyote said to Greg Otter as they had an oscilloscope and other instruments hooked up to the system, and testing by means of a jumper lead from a large access panel of many auxiliary ports the machine has.
Al went on to say, "These ports have every wave osculation ranging from 3 phase to 81 phase".
"This machine uses wave osculations we've never known", Greg Otter replied. "And no matter what port we test from, no wave osculation seems to make it work. Yet the system tests out to have no damage to it what so ever".
"And all the other Navtrac controlled systems check out okay too", Al mentioned. "Something should be working".
"I have to say, this machine has got us up a tree". Greg said, then pointed out, "It's 10 years ahead of our time for one thing".
"Even 10 years from now, I believe this machine will still be a state of the art accomplishment", Al added.
"If only we could find something", Greg mentioned.
"I don't know if altering the wave speed would reveal anything", Al mentioned to Greg, then admitted, "But I haven't found a way on this machine to do that".
"Hopefully, a faster or slower wave speed won't affect this system in the same way as reducing or increasing the osculation", Greg advised. "If it does, that's not going to tell us anything".
"Yes, true. But as of now, we don't know if it does", Al suggested. "At least it will give us another shot in the dark".
"I'll have to agree with you there, Al", Greg replied. "It would be one less stone left unturned".
About that time, Harold Wolf said to Al Coyote and Greg Otter, "We're going to need you two to help us out here on this Time Duration Metering System. It's got Woodrow, Lenard and I really stumped".
As Al and Greg came over to help the others, Woodrow Raccoon mentioned, "I had speculated this project was going to be a work of super science when we began the planning for it six years ago. And upon actually seeing it for the first time after Clarence arrived in it, I have to say my speculations about this machine were right on the money".
"You're not kidding, Woodrow", Greg Otter added, "This machine is the most technically advanced craft I've ever seen in my life. And that's no exaggeration".
With Al and Greg helping Harold, Lenard and Woodrow, it was now all five members of the repair crew trying to track down the elusive problem with the Time Duration Metering System.
The effort of identifying the cause of the problem was going so drawn out and unsuccessful, everyone agreed to skip lunch in the interest of making use of the time.
During the early afternoon, the perseverance of the scientists finally paid off in 'filling in the blanks' of their partially completed technical drawings and understanding of how the Time Duration Metering System actually works. They finally achieved a full understanding of the system...This understanding was achieved by; running tests, conducting experiments (being careful not to cause any further damage to the machine of course), running a series of cryptographic equations, making notations on the drawings and holding group discussions. Everything was now very clear to the crew about the system's design and operation.
"Now that we know this system, we should easily be able to identify the trouble with it", Harold Wolf proclaimed.
"And to think it's likely we would not have yet finished the design of this system until years from now", Greg Otter mentioned.
"Well, completing the design of the Time Duration Metering System is not ahead of us anymore", said Woodrow Raccoon. "We now already know how it works".
"The thing to do now is start tracking down the trouble", Al Coyote mentioned.
"That's right. The sooner, the better", Lenard Wolverine exclaimed. "That system has already occupied a lot of our time and effort out here".
Once the crew began tracking down the problem, it didn't take long to find the culprit component that was at fault.
"Well I'll be damned", Lenard Wolverine retorted.
"It was nothing more than the number four transformer that feeds the primary boost loop of the system", Woodrow Raccoon affirmed. "There was nothing wrong with the system itself to begin with".
"All this time we spent on it, it was a measly step-up transformer", Greg Otter added.
The transformer at fault was a Fairchild brand, model 235, step-up transformer...One of those are small enough to hold in your paw.
"I do know we have some of those back at the lab for a project Greg and I are working on", Al affirmed as Woodrow began to remove the failed transformer.
"Do you and Greg have extras?", Harold Wolf asked Al.
"Yes we do", Al replied as Greg nodded in agreement.
"Damn!", Lenard Wolverine retorted.
"Lenard, until we knew the system, we had no way of finding the problem", Harold Wolf assured Lenard. "You're a scientist like the rest of us. You should know that".
"That's not so much what's got me pissed", Lenard Wolverine began to fuss. "I just hope that little buggar who came to this day and time in this machine appreciates all the trouble we're going through for him. And when he gets back somewhere in the future where he'll be someday, he'll learn not to fool with things he's told to leave alone".
"Now hold on, Lenard", Al Coyote retorted in defense of Clarence. "We were all cubs ourselves at one time, you know".
"Yea. But not cubs who got into something like this", Lenard argued back.
"Let me ask you one thing, Lenard", Woodrow Raccoon said upon removing the bad transformer, then asked, "Had there been time travel machines around when we were growing up, could you guarantee you would have never been tempted to meddle with one?".
Lenard paused a moment, then admitted, "Okay okay, Woodrow. I have to admit, you got me on that one".
"Now that we got that out of the way, we need to focus our attention back on this machine", Harold Wolf exclaimed. "Let's keep the main thing the main thing...Okay?".
Now that it's been establish a Fairchild 235 step-up transformer was all that was needed to get the Time Duration Metering System working, Harold, Woodrow and Lenard began to perform an inspection on the machine's Energy Field Effectuator components...Those components are what generate a bright, cobalt blue, pulsating, energy field around the machine that enables it to levitate for take off and landing, and to provide a means of propulsion through time...Those components are to the machine what an engine and drive train is to an automobile, or what engines and propellers are to airplanes and boats...They generate the machine's driving force through time.
Meanwhile, Al and Greg went back to tracking down the wave osculation issue with the Navtrac Guidance System.
Not long after resuming diagnostic work on the Navtrac Guidance System, Greg Otter noticed double wave phase readings on the oscilloscope, then wasted no time pulling the jumper lead from the machine's 27 wave phase osculation auxiliary port.
"What happened, Greg!?", Al asked, noticing how quickly Greg Otter pulled the jumper lead.
"Is everything okay there!?", Woodrow Raccoon added.
"There were two wave phases showing on the oscilloscope at the same time!?", Greg exclaimed.
"That's not good", Harold Wolf exclaimed. "It's good you pulled that jumper out when you did".
"Hey, look at this", Al Coyote exclaimed.
"What do you got there?", Harold asked Al.
"The oscilloscope shows rapid wave phase fluctuations in the Navtrac Guidance System", Al answered.
"Should we shut it down!?", Lenard Wolverine asked.
"No", Harold Wolf replied as he noticed the other instruments hooked up to the machine. "These instruments show everything is working".
"It would have smoked be now if it wasn't", Woodrow Raccoon assured everyone.
"Oddly enough, this system seems to operate on some kind of multi-phase osculation", Al mentioned as the oscilloscope continued to display rapidly fluctuating wave phases ranging from 3 phase to 81 phase.
"That's what I'm seeing too", Harold agreed. "Who would have ever thought".
"That's what had Al and I stumped all along", Greg said. "No one's ever seen anything like this".
"Look at the wave speed", said Lenard Wolverine. "It's fluctuating too".
"What I don't understand is, why it hasn't worked before?", Harold Wolf asked.
Harold Wolf got his answer.
"Look!"", Greg Otter exclaimed as he pointed to an oddly shaped unit roughly the size of a Kleenex tissue box that start to smoke.
"The oscilloscope is now showing a constant wave phase osculation like it did before", Al said as he noticed the oscilloscope's graph displaying 48 phase with no fluctuation.
"The instruments show everything's stopped working", Woodrow pointed out.
Then, the faulty unit stopped smoking, and the oscilloscope again displayed rapidly fluctuating wave phases.
"Everything's working again", Woodrow said, observing the instruments.
"And we got a fluctuating phase osculation again" Al added, watching the oscilloscope.
"That part's smoking again", Lenard Wolverine pointed out.
"I've also lost the wave fluctuation again", Al Coyote said as the oscilloscope displayed a constant 27 phase, then said as the graph went blank, "I'm getting nothing now".
"Shut it down! Shut it down!", Harold Wolf ordered.
Lenard Wolverine quickly dashed over to the operator's seat, and from a control console shut down the Navtrac Guidance System.
"You thinking what I'm thinking", Harold Wolf asked everyone.
"It's obvious that smoking unit is what fluctuates the phase osculation", Woodrow Raccoon acknowledged.
"I'm on the same page there too", Al Coyote agreed. "It's some kind of...osculation fluctuator, to coin a nomenclature for it".
"Those other leads that go to it are probably from sensors that regulate it", Harold surmised.
"That would add up being those leads come from other locations within this craft", Greg agreed.
"We all know there are obviously none of those back at the lab", Woodrow mentioned.
"That's for sure. It hasn't been invented yet", Al added.
"Well...If we're going to get this time machine operational again, we're going to have to be the ones to invent one", Harold further added. "And sooner than later".
Woodrow Raccoon removed the failed osculation fluctuator, being it was a part that was going to have to be taken to the lab to be back-engineered and duplicated.
"It's not burnt too bad is it?", Harold asked Woodrow.
"It doesn't appear to be", Woodrow assured Harold as he examined the slightly burnt osculation fluctuator. "I believe there's enough left to it for us to have something to work with".
"Clarence is lucky that with the exception of Al and Greg, the rest of us are too old to still be around by the year 2028", Lenard Wolverine ranted.
"I think I know where this is going", Woodrow said to Lenard.
"Damn right", said Lenard. "If I were to live long enough to still be around in 2028, I'd look that little buggar up the day he turns 18 and kick his ass".
"You'd be too old to do it by then", Al assured Lenard.
"You're right", Lenard agreed.
"Aw, give the cub a break, Lenard", Harold added.
Now that Lenard Wolverine got that off his chest, the crew commenced to conduct a thorough inspection of the time travel machine being that almost everything had by now been repaired. However, the inspection still turned up a few minor dependencies that had to be addressed, though they would be quick fixes, and the needed parts were already in existence by 1960...After those dependencies get addressed, that will leave the last and final hurdle being a replacement for the osculation fluctuator to the Navtrac Guidance System.
"It's getting late, and we need to gather some parts at the lab before we can go any further", Harold Wolf mentioned.
"I've got the list of everything we need for tomorrow", Lenard Wolverine added.
"We should have all these minor issues taken care by day's end tomorrow", Harold affirmed.
"That will leave the only thing holding us up being the replacement of that osculation fluctuator", Woodrow Raccoon said.
"From what I've seen of it, back-engineering that unit for duplication is going to be a challenge", Harold surmised.
Such a unit as that didn't yet exist in the year 1960, and the members of the repair crew already suspected that back-engineering and duplicating a replacement for it was going to be monumental task.
The crew then gathered up the instruments and equipment and the failed osculation fluctuator, locked up the utility building that had been built around the time machine, and proceeded to head back to the lab complex. Al Coyote stood look-out for cars approaching on Highway 54 as the panel truck pulled out. Then as Greg Otter stopped with the Falcon, Al got in on the front passenger's seat. Thus the crew was now on their way back to the lab complex.

Upon returning to the laboratory complex, Harold Wolf, Woodrow Raccoon, Lenard Wolverine, Al coyote and Greg Otter retrieved the instruments and equipment from the panel truck to put back away in the lab building...Such expensive equipment is never left in the vehicles overnight.
"I'd like to have to have Jamar Mongoose take a look at this", Harold Wolf said to the other crew members after he brought the osculation fluctuator into the laboratory workshop.
"Jamar is the best back-engineer scientist we have", said Lenard Wolverine. "If anyone can make heads and tails of that fluctuator, Jamar can".
"There's Jamar there now", Al Coyote said.
Harold Wolf then carried the osculation fluctuator over to where Jamar Mongoose, Calvin Fox and Gaylord Serval were developing a prototype for a jamming device that would confuse sensors in heat seeking missiles in a way that would cause them to turn a 180 degree and fly back to where enemy forces launch them from.
"How's the project coming along there, Jamar?", Harold asked.
"We've come along pretty good over the past few days", Jamar Mongoose replied.
This of course was a highly classified project the U.S. Pentagon had contracted Horizon Innovations to develope and build. Though there was no problem with the other scientists not engaged on that project knowing about it, being that they do have high level security clearances.
"Just wait until we have this baby ready to go into production for the Air Force", Calvin Fox remarked.
"No doubt it will be one nasty surprise to some country who wants to wage a war with us", Harold Wolf mentioned as everyone chuckled and agreed.
"It would be like, come back to Papa", Gaylord Serval remarked, getting a laugh from the other scientists.
Such a device when perfected would turn an enemy's own heat seeking missiles back at them.
Harold Wolf then said, "Jamar, I have something here you should have a look at".
"Whatcha got there", Jamar asked as Harold pawed the partly burnt osculation fluctuator to him.
"Have you ever heard of a unit that's designed to constantly fluctuate wave phase osculation?", Harold asked Jamar.
"Say again!?", Calvin Fox exclaimed in disbelief.
"Constantly fluctuates wave phase osculation?", Harold replied to Calvin. "And for systems that require that kind of current".
"That's a new one on me", Jamar admitted as he visually examined the fluctuator.
"It's a new one on all of us", Woodrow Raccoon affirmed. "It's from that time travel machine we've been working on".
"Oh, the machine that Clarence, the little coyote cub, came from the future in", Jamar replied.
"That's the one", Harold affirmed.
"No wonder we've never heard of anything meant to fluctuate wave phase osculation", Gaylord Serval added. "That part Jamar Mongoose is holding is from the future".
"Fifty eight years to be precise", Harold replied to Gaylord. "And made about ten years from now".
"It hasn't even been invented yet", Calvin remarked.
"It's up to us to invent it now", Jamar replied.
"I mentioned that very same thing out at the site this afternoon", Harrold added.
Harold Wolf then explained to Jamar, Calvin and Gaylord about the events that took place out at the time machine landing site during the diagnostic work they were doing, and what their findings were. Woodrow, Al, Greg and Lenard also testified affirmation to what Harold was explaining, and what they themselves notice taking place with the machine's Navtrac Guidance System.
After the briefing about the fluctuator, Harold Wolf asked Jamar Mongoose, "Is there a good chance of making a replacement? I realize it's partly burnt and it may be a monumental challenge to begin with".
"There seems to be enough left to it to work with anyway", Jamar answered, then paused a moment, then continued, "Get me a couple of our top scientists as assistants, and I believe I can make it happen".
"Woodrow here is one of our best", Harold said.
"If Woodrow Raccoon wants to assist me, I'll take him", Jamar Mongoose said as Woodrow Raccoon accepted.
"Let's see...Who else?...", Harold began to ponder.
Al Coyote made the suggestion, "How about Ho Wang Panda who works in Building Seven?".
"Ho Wang is very good at back-engineering", said Jamar Mongoose. "If he wants to assist on this project, he would be of great help".
"I know Ho Wang Panda well enough to know he'll accept", said Woodrow.
"If he accepts, then it will be Jamar, Woodrow and Ho Wang building that replacement fluctuator", said Harold.
"Now you do know I'll have to take some time out occasionally for that infrared tracking jammer", Jamar Mongoose informed Harold Wolf. "I am lead scientist on that project".
"That's understandable", Harold agreed.
Now that the logistics have been made for a crew assigned to back-engineering and improvising a replacement for the Navtrac Osculation Fluctuator, the scientists who worked on the time machine called it a day and began to head home...Jamar Mongoose, Calvin Fox and Gaylord Serval decided they would work on the prototype for the infrared tracking jammer into early evening before knocking off for the day.
Just before Al left the lab complex, he phoned Marge. Of course, back in those days, the call was made from a land line, rotary dial phone on one of the workshop tables.
After dialing the home number, Marge picked up and greeted, "Hello".
"Hello, Marge. I'm getting off from work right now", Al replied.
"Okay, Al. As soon as we get off the line, I'll call Pete and Tabetha Skunk so they and their cubs can get ready to go with us", Marge said to Al.
"I know their cubs will enjoy running slotcars with our cubs", Al surmised.
"I believe this will be Gail and Denny's first time running slotcars", Marge mentioned to Al.
"Well, it will certainly be a treat to them", said Al.
"I'll go ahead now and call them", said Marge.
"I'll see you at the house shortly", Al replied before they hung up.
After the phone conversation, Al then went to the car and headed back to the house.

By the time Al arrived home, Pete and Tabetha Skunk with their cubs, Gail and Denny, had already dropped in at the house. Al knew that as he pulled up into the driveway by Pete and Tabetha's woodland green and white, 1953, 4 door Chevy Bel-air parked out front...Even though it was a 7 year old car, Pete and Tabetha Skunk kept that car looking and running as immaculate as the day they purchased it from the dealership as a new car 7 years ago. In fact, if that '53 Chevy was sent back in time to 1953, the only way you could tell it from a new one would be by it's odometer reading.
Everyone greeted Al as he entered the house. Marge and the skunk couple were having some coffee, which Al also got him a cup. The cubs were also playing together, and making sure Gail Skunk behaves herself.
After the adults enjoyed some of that Wilkins brand coffee, Marge announced, "I guess we're about ready to go".
"I'm ready when we all are", Al replied, then said to the cubs, "Go get your cars".
"Awright! We're goin' racing!", Rex proclaimed as the other cubs cheered.
"Bet my car still beats yours, Rex", Jed said as the cubs hurried back to get their slotcars.
"Oh yea! We'll see!", Rex cheerfully replied.
"Mine is a Chrysler 300 like Dad's car", Clarence proclaimed. "It will beat both of yours.
Truth being though, the chassis and motors on all their slotcars are the same made by Strombecker Toy Corporation.
"I've already told Pete and Tabetha that Ted has cars for rent at the hobby shop", Marge informed Al.
"Yea, Gail and Denny don't have any of those kind of cars like your cubs have", Pete Skunk affirmed.
"Ted Badger has a good selection of them to choose from too", Al mentioned to Pete and Tabetha.
"My car is gonna chase some of those mummies", Donna said as she held up her '56 Nash slotcar, then imulated a motor sound, "Broom broom".
"Oh those little cars are so cool", Tabetha Skunk commented. "And they run on a track".
"Wow neato!", five year old Denny skunk exclaimed. "They got drivers in them".
"We actually put the drivers in", Rex said to Denny as the coyote cubs showed Denny and Gail how they tie wired 2 inch rubber figurines to the chassis inside the bodies of the slotcars to make it appear they are drivers.
Jed's '57 Ford had Disney's Chip and Dale tie wired in.
Rex's '57 Chevy had Ready the dog from the series Rough and Ready.
Donna's '56 Nash had Andy Panda.
And Clarence's '60 Chrysler 300 had Yogi Bear driving.
"Get me a driver for one", seven year old Gail announced.
"What did you forget, Gail", Mama Tabetha asked her daughter.
"Get me a driver for one please", Gail rephrased her request.
"That's more like it", Tabetha replied.
"I want one too...Pleeeassse", Denny also requested.
"Come on back to our room and you can pick one out", Jed offered to Gail and her brother Denny.
In the boys bedroom, Denny picked out a 2 inch figurine of Thomas the cat from the series Tom 'n' Jerry.
"I like this one", Gail said as she picked out a mini teddy bear figurine that was made of pom-pom material...However, it was three and a half inches tall.
"This looks too high for one of those cars though", Gail mentioned.
"It's made of a plushy material", Jed assured Gail. "You can squish it up into a car, then wire it in".
Knowing that idea will work, Gail went with the mini pom-pom teddy bear.
Everyone then went out to the cars to head on out to Ted Badger's Hobby Shop.
Pete and Tabetha's cubs, as well as Al and Marge's cubs, were looking forward to an enjoyable evening of runnung slotcars at Ted Badger's Hobby Shop at the Tri-Star Plaza in Albuquerque. And there was one more treat Gail and Denny wanted.
"Our cubs asked if they could ride in your new station wagon", Pete Skunk mentioned to Al and Marge.
Even though the Skunk Family's '53 Chevy was like new, the Coyote Family's Plymouth Fury wagon was actually a new car.
"We'd be delighted to let them ride with us", Marge replied as Al agreed.
"Awright! They're riding with us", Rex proclaimed as Gail and Denny cheered.
"We'll follow behind in our car", said Tabetha.
Marge got in behind the wheel being she was going to drive, and Gail Skunk got in on the front seat next to Marge.
"Wow! This car has cool fins and everything", Denny proclaimed as he and Donna climbed in at the tailgate to sit in the rear facing jump seat.
Jed, Clarence and Rex got in on the regular rear seat.
Once Al closed the tail gate after Denny and Donna got in, he got in on the front side passenger's seat next to Gail.
As Marge cranked up the engine, Gail asked, "Aren't you going to wind the windows down?"
"We're turning the air conditioner on", Marge answered Gail as she turned on the A/C.
"Wow neat!", Gail proclaimed. "Our car doesn't have that!"
"This car actually has an air conditioner?!", Denny asked in amazement.
"It sure does", Rex replied to Denny.
The Skunk Family's '53 Chevy didn't come with A/C, being it wasn't available on many mid and low price cars until the late 1950s. Anyway, Gail and Denny were certainly impressed by the station wagon having A/C.
When Marge pushed the reverse button to back out of the driveway, Gail exclaimed, "Wow! a button to make it go!".
"That's the select-o-matic push buttons for the transmission", Al said to Gail. "All Chrysler, DeSoto, Dodge and Plymouth cars with automatics have them now days".
And sure enough, after backing out of the driveway, Marge pushed the drive button to proceed forward.
After the coyotes with the skunk cubs pulled out of the driveway and proceeded down the street, Pete and Tabetha followed in their car...with windows rolled down of course.
Then they turned right on State Route 3, and headed west toward where Route 3 eventually curves north. As they proceeded along Route 3, Al turned the radio on and tune it to some music.

The cubs behaved well along the trip, though Al and Marge had to call Gail Skunk down for misbehaving, a little. But all and all, the cubs were well mannered.
Shortly before passing through Encino, a song the cubs get a kick out of was playing on the car radio. To the cubs, it sounded like the music artist was talking to Dale the chipmunk.

Upon entering Encino, Gail Skunk asked, "Where are cranker things to wind the windows up and down? I don't see them".
"They're power windows", Marge said to Gail.
"You just push this little switch up or down", Al added as he demonstrated the window on his side.
"Oh wow. neato", said Gail. "Our car don't have that either".
"What is it", Denny Skunk, who was sitting in the rear jump seat with Donna, turned around and asked.
"Our car has power windows", Jed answered Denny, then demonstrated the window of the left rear door next to where he was sitting.
"Neato. The windows go up and down all by them selves", Denny said in amazement.
"This is a really nice car", said Gail.
"Well, thank you", Marge replied.
After passing through Encino and continuing along Highway 285, they passed the Horizon Innovations Laboratory Complex as they were leaving Encino.
"That's where our dad works", Rex said to Gail and Denny as they past the complex.
"They also have another complex over on Highway 60", Jed added.
As they were leaving Encino, a bluegrass song that was 7 years old began playing on the car radio.

Gail and Denny's parents, Pete and Tabitha Skunk however, had a more conservative preference in music. The song that was presently playing on the radio of their '53 Chevy as they followed along was;

A few miles down the road, they past the rural house trailer where Rufus and Laura Opossum and their five cubs live.

"I don't see their truck", Marge said. "Rufus must be still out from making a scrap metal run".
Several more miles down Highway 285, when they rode past skid marks on the pavement, Rex said to Gail and Denny, "This is where we saw that '58 Chevy turned over a few days ago".
"Gee wiz. The one with the beavers?", Denny asked.
Riding past where the car came to rest, Marge said to Al, "This is where we saw the car laying up-side-down".
"I notice that's where the trail of broken glass and other debris stops", Al mentioned.
Before long, they came to the new section of Interstate 40 at Clines Corners that was almost complete. Being the section of interstate was still in it's final stages of completion, it was the old Route 66 that was still in use that they turned left on to proceed west.
"Looks like they almost got 'er done", Al remarked about the Interstate.
"It's looking more like how remember it in my day and time", Clarence said.
Of course, it was okay to mention that in the presents of Gail and Denny, being they and their parents already know that Clarence is from the future.
Upon arriving to the city of Moriarty, there was no further I-40 construction. However, after passing through Moriarty, Route 66 left off where that completed section of I-40 began between Moriarty and Albuquerque.
"This is the first time me and my brother..."Gail began before Marge intervened.
"My brother and I", Marge corrected Gail.
"Oh. My brother and I are seeing this highway for the first time", Gail continued as they left the old Route 66 and onto the new I-40...and with Pete and Tabetha following behind in their '53 Chevy.
A jazzy song began playing following a station break on the car radio.

Further along I-40, Gail was feeling somewhat fidgety, thus she slid down on the front seat until she was actually laying down on the seat. However, an issue was, that after Gail had slid all the way down on the seat, her feet were able to reach the dashboard...Gail had the soles of her feet on the dashboard of the Coyote Family's brand new Plymouth Fury station wagon.

Al first notice Gail's feet on the dashboard when she bumped a knob on the radio with her foot.

Al immediately got onto Gail about her putting her feet on the dash, and Marge got onto her about sitting properly on the seat.
Right about now, Al and Marge were having 2nd thoughts about allowing Gail Skunk to ever ride in any of their cars again.
"Sit up right. And pull your dress back down", Marge told Gail.
As Gail sat back up on the seat and pulled her dress back where it belonged, Al mentioned to her, "And we had this car only two weeks. And here you are putting your feet on the dash".
"That's right", Marge said to Gail. "My husband and I didn't appreciate that".
That situation soon settled down as they continued along I-40, and by then another song was playing on the car radio.

Eventually they arrived to Albuquerque as the big sign could be seen ahead warning that I-40 ends, and resumes again as Route 66. Right in line with where I-40 ends for the time being, was the Tri-Star Plaza, where Ted Badger's Hobby Shop is.
"This is where the slotcar track is", Rex said to Gail and Denny as they rode onto the Albuquerque section of Route 66.
Almost immediately after leaving I-40, was the entrance to Tri-Star Plaza, with it's late 1950s contemporary architecture. It's big gaudy, but nostalgically cool, contemporary plaza sign had the shape of three stars built into it, and was richly embellished with neon lights...which was typical of the day and time.
The Coyote Family's Plymouth station wagon pulled into the parking lot, followed by the Skunk Family's car, and then to parking spaces near Ted Badger's Hobby Shop. The cubs were aroused with excitement as they got out of the station wagon to go into the hobby shop.
"Watch for cars", Marge reminded the cubs.
"Of the times we went past this plaza, we never knew there was a hobby shop here", Pete Skunk mentioned as he and Tabetha got out of their car.
"This is where we come to let the cubs run their slot cars", Al said to Pete as he opened the tailgate to let Donna and Denny out.
Jed, Rex, Clarence and Gail were the first to enter the hobby shop, as the boys carried their slotcars, controllers and extra tie wire for wiring in figurines as make believe drivers.
"Oh hi there, guys" Ted Badger greeted the cubs. "I see you brought a friend along".
"This is a neighbor of ours. Gail skunk", Jed said to Ted as he introduced Gail and Ted.
"Pleased to meet you, Gail", Ted Badger said to Gail Skunk.
"Me too", Gail cheerfully replied.
As the parents came into the hobby shop along with Denny and Donna who was carrying her slotcar and controller, Ted mentioned, "I see here's the rest of the crew".
"Hello, Ted", Al greeted.
"Hello there, Al, Marge...And how's Donna doing?", Ted greeted in return.
"Doin' good", Donna replied.
"Wow, this is a nice track", Tabetha Skunk complimented as Pete agreed.
Al and Marge then introduced Ted Badger to Pete and Tabetha Skunk, then mentioned to Ted that they invited the skunks along to let Gail and Denny run slotcars with the coyote cubs.
"I still got six lanes open", Ted mentioned, as there were two ferret brothers presently running cars.
"Our will have to rent a car each", Pete said to Ted.
There were quite a few rental slotcars to choose from.
"I want that one", Denny said as he picked out a red and white, 1957 Corvette with the roof on it.
When Denny got the car, he tie wired in the Thomas the cat figurine he had pick out back at the house.
"Tom the cat is driving this one", Denny Skunk proclaimed.
"I want that cool one", Gail said as she picked out a light pastel blue 1960 Thunderbird.
Ted is usually okay with cubs tie wiring figurines to the side of the chassis of his rental slotcars as long as nothing is rubbing any moving parts of the car such as the motor armature or axles.
However, when Ted saw the plush pom-pom mini teddy bear figurine that Gail wanted to tie wire into the Thunderbird, he said, "I'm good with rubber and plastic tiny characters fastened into my cars. But I'm sorry to say, that's made of fluffy material, and fibers could get caught up into the armature of the motor and burn it out".
"Aw, jeepers whiz", Gail retorted as she was bumed out.
"I'll let you use one of mine", Jed offered to Gail, being that he had both Chip and Dale in his car. "That will still leave me with Chip driving".
Gail was delighted as Jed unwired the Dale chipmunk figurine from the chassis of his '57 Ford slotcar for Gail to use as a make believe driver in the Thunderbird.
"What do you say to Jed?", Pete asked Gail, as Jed was wiring in the Dale figurine for her.
"Thank you, Jed", Gail said.
With that taken care of, the remaining six lanes were rented for one hour, and the cubs went to running their cars.
At the Hobby Shop by moyomongoose

Denny was at the orange lane part of the station, but put his car on the red lane followed by it immeadiaty taking off, then wiping out on the bank turn.
"Hey! My car zoomed away", Denny retorted.
"You done put your car on my lane", Rex told Denny. "And I was giving my car the juice when you did it".
"Looks like Tom the cat had a crash up", Donna jested.
Jed then explained to Gail and Denny, "What ever your colour is at your control area, that's the colour lane you put your car on".
Once the skunk cubs understood that, everything then went along smoothly...Except for the fact Gail and Denny were having frequent wipe-outs until they started to get the feel of controlling their cars.
After about 25 minutes of running the slotcars, Gail and Denny began to master the skill of running them pretty good. Al seeing that, then decided to host one lap races for the cubs.
The cubs would stop their cars lined up side by side, then Al would say, "Ready. Set. Go!".
Gail and Denny found that to be even more fun than just simply running them.
The track time was up for the two ferret brothers, and they decided to call it quits for the day. Thus, Al offered to rent some track time and slotcar rental for Pete and Tabetha...which they gladly accepted.
Pete asked Ted if he had a Packard slotcar for rent.
"I don't have one in that body. But I do have '49 Hudson", Ted replied.
"That will work for me", Pete said as he chose the grey and black Hudson.
There was also a dark blue '58 Cadillac that Tabetha picked out.
"Mom and Dad's racing with us", Gail proclaimed.
"Awright!", Denny cheered.
Now all eight lanes were in use with the cubs and the skunk cubs parents, and everyone had lots of fun.
Once the hour of track time ran out, Al and Marge agreed to rent another of time on all eight lanes. After which, at some point, Pete and Tabatha agreed to turn their two lanes and cars over to let Al and Marge run them...Al got the grey and black '49 Hudson, and Marge got the dark blue '58 Cadillac.
Later on, Pete Skunk agreed to host one lap races for Al, Marge and the cubs.
Pete would give the, "Ready. Set. Go", beginning each race.
During a time when everyone were simply running the cars not during a race, a mummy song began playing on the piped in music in the hobby shop.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MswJNqvZ850
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dovXGnO81-k
"There's a mummy up ahead! And Andy Panda's gonna chase 'em in my Nash", Donna Proclaimed.
Jed, Clarence and Rex then got in on that mummy gag, pretending their cars are chasing mummies.
Rex explained to Gail and Denny about how they do that mummy gag whenever a mummy related song plays on the piped in music. Then Gail and Denny were getting a kick out of pretending their Corvette and Thunderbird were chasing mummies.
Al played along with the cubs by telling them, "My Hudson picked up a couple of hitchhiking mummies".
"Don't let the Hudson catch up to you", Rex jested to the other cubs. "The mummies will jump out and get you".
During this time, Mama Tabetha noticed Gail's dress was scooted up.
Mama Skunk got Gail's attention, then motioned her to pull the hem of her dress down.
As Gail was addressing the dress issue with one paw, she still had her slotcar at full throttle on the long straightaway with the other paw. Once her '60 T-bird got to the bank turn, it wiped out at full throttle, flipped over end over end, and also wiping out Jed's '57 Ford. Donna's '56 Nash and Marge's '58 Cadillac sped by unaffected.
The issue with Gail's dress was definitely a concern. Though the cars wrecking was all in good fun...The cars were designed to take it, thus they were not damaged.
After Gail straightened out her dress issue, and the two crashed cars were put back on their lanes, the fun continued.
After the track time ran out, it had been an enjoyable two hours of fun and entertainment for everyone. Pete, Tabetha and their cubs thanked Al and Marge for inviting them along as they unwired the figurines from the chassis of two of the rented cars to turn them back in.
Before everyone left the hobby shop, Al asked Clarence, "Have you built model car before?".
"I have quite a collection of them I built, but not here though", Clarence replied, then continued, "I have a Jeep Compass, and a Toyota Tacoma, and a Ford Escape...".
"Woah, stop there", Al interrupted Clarence, then continued in a low tone, "You're listing off names of cars no one has heard of in this day and time".
"And Ted is close enough to hear you", Marge told Clarence.
"Oh, I wasn't even thinking of that", Clarence admitted.
"I thought Clarence might like to get some model cars while we're here", Al said to Marge, figuring that most of the 1950s and 1940s cars may not be available 50 years or so in the future.
"Oh, those would be cool cars", Clarence cheerfully replied, knowing the car model kits would be of cars up till 1960.
"I take that as a yes", Marge replied.
"Well, I have a big selection of them in stock", Ted mentioned.
When everyone made their way back to the section where the car model kits are, Clarence was amazed seeing so many of the cool car kits like Thunderbirds, Studebakers, Packards, a few Henry Js, a few Edsels, 1959 and 1960 Fords, Chevys, Cadillacs, and much more.
Being that Ted Badger was not within earshot of everyone, Al said to Clarence, "I figured you could take some of these back to your day and time with you".
"Gee, thank you, Dad", Clarence replied, then said in a low tone, "You never see car models like these in my day and time".
Jed and Rex even suggested a few of them for Clarence, and by the time they were ready to check out, Clarence had 27 car models he had picked out".

As for glue and paint, Clarence did mention that model glue and paint would still be easily available in the 21st Century.
"You got enough to start a automobile assembly line there", Ted commented as he was ringing up the sale, which came to $24 and change...The going price for car most models in those days was about one dollar, and less for others.
Of course, to avoid telling telling Ted Badger that Clarence was from the future, Al told Ted a white lie that the models were for all the cubs.
"I know they'll enjoy them", Ted said as he was bagging them up...paper bags back in the day.
It was just past sunset, and before heading home, Al and Marge invited the Skunk Family with them to Manuel Kinkajou's Pizza and Cafe', which was right there in the plaza.
"They got good pizza here", Jed said to Pete, Tabetha and their cubs.
"And good ice cream too", Rex added.
Before making their way to Manuel Kinkajou's Pizza and Cafe', Al and Pete took Clarence's car models to the station wagon. Once that was taken care of, everyone then headed over to the cafe'.
"We really appreciate you doing all of this for us", Pete thanked Al and Marge.
"A lot of it is for Clarence also", Marge replied. "We want to do things together while he's still with us".
"Well before we go in the cafe' ", Pete mentioned as everyone paused before going inside. "You mean like when Clarence goes back to the future".
"We've been making a lot of progress lately repairing the time travel machine", Al interjected. "Only one component that still has to be back-engineered still stands in the way".
"Aw, we're gonna miss you when you go", Gail said to Clarence.
"I'm gonna miss you all too", Clarence replied. "But it's still nice being with you all while I'm here".
"That component you made mention of. Is that some future part that hasn't been invented yet?", Pete asked Al out of curiosity.
"I'd like to tell you more about it, Pete", Al replied, then continued, "But the machine is classified, which means I'm not allowed to tell you anything about the components or how the machine works".
"Well, yea. That's understandable", Pete admitted.
Marge then told the cubs, especially to Gail and Denny, "You cubs don't mention anything to Manuel Kinkajou about a time machine".
"And be careful not to slip up and say the wrong thing around any customers either", Al added.
With all that said and out of the way, everyone went on inside.
Once inside, Al and Marge introduced the Skunk Family and Manuel Kinkajou, and then ordered two family size pizzas, which was enough to go around for everyone. Manuel Kinkajou agreed to move four tables together for the party of ten.
While waiting foe the pizzas, the coyote cubs played with their slotcars on the table, and let Gail and Denny take turns playing with the cars also.
"Here are the pizzas", Marge said as Manuel brought the two very large pizzas to the table one at a time, then brought out the drinks.
"This certainly looks good", Pete complimented as Tabetha agreed.
After everyone finished the pizzas, they ordered ice cream, which was also a special treat to the cubs...Running slotcars, then having pizza, then having ice cream was grand evening of enjoyment for everyone.
It was already night time when it was getting time to be heading on home, Al paid the tab, and all the adults contributed to the tip for Manuel Kinkajou.
As everyone bid Manuel good night, Marge reminded the cubs as they left, "Don't forget your slotcars and controllers".
Back at the cars, it was agreed to let Gail and Denny ride back home in the Plymouth station wagon like it was coming to the hobby shop.
"We'll drop Gail and Denny off at your place when we get back", Marge said to Pete and Tabetha.
With that arrangement made, the Coyote Family, with Gail and Denny headed out in their '60 Plymouth Fury station wagon, and followed by Pete and Tabetha in their '53 Chevy.
Along I-40 after they left Albuquerque, Al tuned the radio to a station that was presently playing a song by the Champs.

Marge kept the Plymouth to speeds not above 65 mph being that Pete and Tabetha mentioned because their Chevy has a six cylinder motor, 65 mph is as fast as they feel comfortable driving it (V-8 motors were not available in a Chevrolet until 1955).
Along I-40, a 1958 Oldsmobile passed them in the night doing 95 mph.
"He's really getting down on it", Marge said.
"Yea, fast moving cars do look faster when your not going as fast", Al noted.
Within several minutes, the taillights of the '58 Oldsmobile were out of sight in the night.
From shortly before the city of Moriarty, the cubs slept the rest of the way home, thus Al and Marge agreed to keep the volume on the radio turned down way low.

Upon returning to Duran, the cubs awoke to the sound of the station wagon being parked at the Skunk Family residence...A car stopping does tend to awaken cubs after the continual white noise of riding for a while.
As Pete and Tabetha pulled up in their car, Al was opening the tailgate to let Denny out after Gail had already gotten out from the front seat.
"Well we certainly appreciate the evening out", Pete thanked Al and Marge.
"We enjoyed it very much", Tabetha mentioned, then asked, "Our cubs didn't give you any problems, I take it?".
"Not at all", Marge replied as Al agreed.
Al and Marge decided not to tell Pete and Tabetha about the Gail's antics in their station wagon on the way to the hobby shop, being that they had already addressed it.
"Those slotcars are cool", Denny proclaimed. "Thank you Mr. Al Coyote and Mrs. Marge".
"Thank you", Gail also thanked Al and Marge.
After the skunks went inside their house, Al got back in the station wagon and the Coyote Family rode back up the street to their house. It was quite a day for everyone, but it was now time for bed so everyone can get a good night's sleep. After all, Al will be back out with the crew at the time machine site tomorrow to address those minor issues that can be quick fixed. As for Woodrow Raccoon, he'll be assisting Jamar Mongoose at the lab in back-engineering that osculation fluctuator, which they already know is going to prove to be quite an undertaking.

Clarence Coyote and Project Courier - Part 33 - SFW Version - Interesting Encounters
Clarence Coyote and Project Courier - Part 35 - Close Call
+2
In this part, Al Coyote and the other scientists are coming close to getting the time travel machine oporational...except for one part that has to be back-engineered and duplicated.
Later in the day, The coyotes invite Pete and Tabetha Skunk along with their cubs, Gail and Denny, to go race slotcars on the big commercial track at the hobby shop.

There are some music links of the songs the characters in the story listened to.
The music links are linked from multiple sources because of Youtube constantly killing music videos. So if you get the Youtube notice shown below when you click onto a link, the other links listed with it will be the same song.
