It is July of 1960, in the small community of Duran, New Mexico, ten year old Randy Fox is mowing the grass for Mom and Dad to earn some extra allowance money.
The mower is one of those powered reel mowers...The cutting part is a rotating reel with spiral blades instead of a horizontal spinning blade. Reel mowers were still quite common in those days, though many models of them were no longer in production.
You might have noticed the start cord tied to the push bar. Like many lawn mowers years ago, this one was not equipped with a recoil starter. The start cord was wound around a pulley on the crankshaft, then the cord was given a yank to start the mower...If it didn't start the first time, you wound the start cord around the pulley again and took another go at it.
I reposted the pic a 3rd time. The way I originally drew the start cord tied to the push bar didn't add up.
