______________________________ SATURDAY, JULY 2ND, 1960 It was about 10:00 in the morning when Jed, Rex, Clarence and Donna came in from playing, which Mama Marge Coyote made up a batch of Cherry Kool-Aid for them. "Is there any grape?", Rex asked. "I made cherry. If you don't want that, there's always water", Marge told Rex. Thus Rex agreed that cherry flavour Kool-Aid would be better than just drinking plain water while his siblings had Kool-Aid. "I'll need to go to Santa Rosa to get some grocery items for supper tonight", Marge said to Al. "I promised I'd help Frank Coyote get his mower working this morning", Al replied said to Marge. "You can take the car, and I'll be nearby if the cubs need anything". "Okay", Marge replied as she took the keys to the family's Chrysler 300. After Marge headed out in the Chrysler to the grocery store in Santa Rosa, Al told the cubs, "If any of you need anything, I'll be over at Frank and Wanda's place helping Frank get his lawn mower fixed". The cubs finished their Kool-Aid shortly after Al walked over to Frank and Wanda's house a block away. After the cubs finished their Kool-Aid, they decided to listen to some records for a while before going back out to play. So Jed, Rex, Clarence and Donna set the record player up in the boy's bedroom. There were records various styles of music that were in the family's record collection, which the cubs enjoyed...One of the selections they put on the record player was 'Climb Every Mountain'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGIoh4K5YV8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1EO7-XniBg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mhy2A8dwd-8 During the playing of 'Climb Every Mountain', Jed said, "Here's a funny trick Micky Ferret showed me one time at school". That funny trick was placing a finger on the record, and spinning it faster that what the record player was playing it...The cubs laughed as the music went from the normal "...till you find your dream", to speedy chipmunks "A dream-ta-il-nee-alla-lo-u-ca-gi-betachabettaetta". "It sounds like chipmunks fussing in an argument", Clarence laughed as the other cubs also laughed. "Watch this!", Rex exclaimed as he put a paw on the record to slow it down, making the music go "...Ford every stream. Follow everryy rraainnboooooooooooooo...tooooooooo yooouuuuuuu..." The cubs really laughed hard over that one. "Sounds like he been drinking", Jed laughed. "And I betcha it wasn't Kool-Aid", Rex laughed "Sounds like Dopey Huely singing it", Donna laughed. "Let me try! Let me try", Clarence exclaimed as he was laughing. Clarence then put his paw on the record, then rapidly sped it up, slowed it down, sped it up, slowed it down, sped it up, slowed it down... "It sounds like the song is going bee-bow bee-bow bee-bow", Jed laughed as the other cubs busted out in more laughter. Then Donna stopped the record completely against the record player's effort to keep going as you could hear the motor humming as it was held back, and said, "Does the record have my permission to go?". "Sure. Why not?", said Rex. With that said, Donna spun the record so fast the music sounded, "Bitabitabitabitabita..." But then, Donna's paw bumped the record player's needle arm, sending the needle across the record as that >ZOOOOOOP< sound can be heard. "Uh oh. I think you scratched the record", Rex said to Donna. And sure enough, when they put the needle back on the record, it played, "...dream that will ne >cik< dream that will ne >cik< dream that will ne >cik< dream that will ne >cik<..." They tried it on another place on the record, and it sounded, "...-ry path you kno >cik< -ry path you kno >cik< -ry path you kno >cik<..." "Oh boy, that's done it", said Rex. "It's a broken record now", Jed declared. "We better not tell Mom and Dad". Thus the cubs put 'Climb Every Mountain' away like nothing happened, and got out a different record. "This record looks like it's worth a laugh", Rex said as he placed it on the player. And when he put his finger on the record to spin it fast, it sounded... https://youtu.be/e_w_MoqfF0w?t=47 The cubs busted out in laughter it was so funny. "It sounds like the King of Rock 'n' Roll got ants in his pants", Donna proclaimed as the cubs laughed. After listing to the King of Rock 'n' Roll record sound like a chipmunk, Donna got out another record. "What about this one?", Donna asked as she held up the record. "It does have chipmunks for real". "Oh yea. That oughta be a good one", Rex laughed. "Let's give it a spin", Jed agreed. "That song will still be around in 2018", Clarence declared. "I've heard it before when I was still in my day and time. I know it will be funny". It was The Witch Doctor song with Alvin and The Chipmunks. When Jed sped the record up, the cubs really got a good laugh out of it. https://youtu.be/GOWBkTmiNIc?t=12 The cubs found that record being spun fast to be the funniest one yet. And with Mom making a grocery run to Santa Rosa, and Dad over at Frank and Wanda's place helping Frank getting his mower running, it seemed like they wouldn't get caught. Meanwhile, a block down the street at Frank and Wanda's house, Al noticed the magneto coil to flywheel clearance for the mower's ignition looked further apart than normal. "Do you know who set the coil clearance last?", Al asked Frank. "I did when I had to replace the coil. I used a matchbook cover to set the gap", Frank answered. "Of course it won't run now anyway". "You really need a feeler gauge", said Al. "I'm willing to bet that's why your mower won't start". "I don't have any feeler gauges", Frank said. "When ever I set the points on my old Chevy wagon, a matchbook cover always works". "It's more critical with mowers though", Al informed Frank. "I guess I've been finding that out today", Frank admitted. "I have a set of feeler gauges back at my place in the garage", Al assured Frank. "I'll go get them. I'll be right back". Al then walked back to the house to get a feeler gauge from the garage to check magneto coil to flywheel clearance on Frank's mower. As Al approached the garage to get the set of feeler gauges, he heard the record player in the house in 'chipmunk mode' and cubs laughing. Thus Al came into the house, then stood in a doorway of the boy's bedroom and watched the cubs for about ten seconds before saying something. When Daddy Al suddenly asked, "What do you all think you're doing?", you would have thought the cubs would have jumped to the ceiling. Needless to say, the laughter abruptly stopped just before Al got the paddle and gave the four cubs got a good paddling. As the cubs were crying from getting paddled, Al gave the cubs a lecture about doing damage to records and the record player by doing the way with it they were doing. Al then had the cubs put the record player and records up for the day before going back to Frank and Wanda's house with the set of feeler gauges for the mower repair...After all, there were many things the cubs could do playing with the neighbor cubs instead of ruining a record player and a collection of records.
