I've been pretty quiet for a while, but I'm still working on the puppet.
Turns out, my first head wasn't viable, as it had fundamental proportion problems, most notably that the cheeks were too far forward. I didn't have enough clay and without me realizing it at the time, the model turned out egg-shaped, the jaw was off due to me having to work around the stalk of the light bulb, and the cheeks were the wrong profile. Dangit.
In the first image collection, you can see me try to salvage the design and learn how the muzzle could be fitted, but it's obviously not going to work. The head is the wrong profile and muzzle is especially bad. This is due to my model, not because of how the foam was cut. It's time to start a new model, this time using a cardboard base (which also turned out to be a bad idea. Next time, I'll not be cheap and just buy more clay)!
In the second collection, you can see many proportional improvements. After building the new foam form, I can see again that the muzzle is still not quite right. It was angled downward too much and is too long, but that can be replaced and I decided to repair the proportions of the head. It's much better, and I think this is the one I'm going to use. I'll make a new muzzle later after fitting the eyes. The head and faceplate have been greatly reinforced with mains electrical wiring and is actually a very strong structure, so I shouldn't have any trouble building a new muzzle and fitting it later. Why is there a hole where the eyes should be? A potentially clever/stupid idea, that's what!
The third collection shows my ambitious concept for posable and blinking eyes. Engineering the shutter mechanism for the eyes took a LONG time and it's why I haven't posted many status updates as of late. The results are surprisingly good, though, and with some clever wire work and the use of bowden cables, it should be possible to get some really cool expressions operating the cables with my left hand. Given that Wac has no pupils, it's only appropriate that the whites are actually White-Out smeared on the back of sanded plastic. Haha. They're nice and white with a durable matte finish and look AWESOME. Wac probably won't be showing his hands very often, so I can keep my left hand free for operating the various cables. Movable ears will probably be too much to design, but the ears will come last, so there's time to think about that. Now that the complicated eyes are finally in place and operating smoothly, I'm really getting exited!
