What a greedy bitch! She deserves to be shot where she sits!

The chief of security is a good man, his sacrifice should not go unnoticed. He knew what is about to happen and allows it.
Baree

I wouldn't call him a good man considering what else we know about him. But he redeems himself a little bit I suppose.

I wonder what the (greyhound?)'s story is.

He knows he's irredeemable, but he wants to do at least one good thing before he dies.

"Show me not how a man lives his life, but how he ends it."
(Unknown but as told to by my HS. Teacher in the '80s)

"Are you going die lying there in bed and have a thousand rats gnaw at you or are you going to get up and fight for every second you have left?!"
(From memory, Not exact wording, paraphrased from Thanos to Captain Marvel, 1980-ish - "Death of Captain Marvel" Graphic Novel.)

Good thoughts. Hitler wasn't bad because of the genocide, he was good for killing Hitler!

(This is a reduction to absurdity, but I'm using it to point out the flawed nature of the supposition that a noble/good death makes up for prior evil acts)

This is (or was) 1980s/90s Sarcasm. You think people today complain about the Middle East and the (small amount) of Suicide Bombers taking out street cafes to kill as many innocents, back then it was a daily occurrence. Thus the comment was made about them, and they actually took it to heart.

As for Hitler.... well there is a Christian sect that not only praises him, they worship him, while making claims that he went to heaven while all those he killed in the concentration are burning in hell. Do note that Christian Sect is not recognized by the rest of Christianity and has ostracized them. The issue is that they exist and if not dealt with can be a problem in the future.

Note - I am not saying that that Hitler was a good person, his actions he took in life say otherwise. He was a small man who hungered for power and abused every bit of it he could to get things his way and he dragged many people and several nations with him. He can be called evil but yet many revere and worship him. Of this I think John Lennon said it best - "Everyone is born with the potential to be the next Jesus Christ or the next Adolf Hitler - to be the best or worst humanity has to offer."

I will end it here.

Are the Screwmlins a blunt take on American Imperialism and Expansionism? Because if so, it can't get any more glaring.
DrJavi

Nope. They do reference something from real life, but it's not that.

What is it they reference?
Also LOVE your comic and can’t wait to see what’s next! Thank you so much for continuing it!

Whoever you blame for all the problems in the world, really. Everyone has their own theories, so you can choose who they represent.

So they're just generic evil aliens who's only motivation is to please their demonic goddess. That explains why there isn't a lot of satisfaction dealing with/killing them.

Going to be honest, I've been struggling to figure out what this race of bugs even slides into ever since they were introduced in the fifth story of this chapter. This may be just me, but a race of parasites slowly replacing, conquering, enslaving, and torturing a planet of people for their cultish religion muddles the real-world comparisons for me. I even once assumed they applied to any political power and/or government would commit in real life, so the specifics were lost on me there.

The Srewmlins feel almost at odds with what the comic was built on from the start, at least when it comes to how much the world fell into ruin because of them. Animalkind may not be blameless, but the alien, almost ethnically looking citizens are linked to all that Origins exposited about, despite everything seemingly sounding like another fault of the world leaders themselves, working mostly uncoerced by outside forces other than profit and power.
BlitzkriegOmega
3 days, 13 hrs ago
the Screwmlins are less the bomb itself and more the ignition that lights the fuse. Animalkind could have, at any point, rejected the Scewmlins and what they stood for, but those in power bought into the idea of being "One of the Good Ones" that get to enjoy riches, power, and immunity to the laws the Screwmlins will impose on the rest for just a little bit of cooperation.

And then the Screwmlins demand more and give less. The animals in power comply to keep as much as they can, damn the rest. And then they demand more and give less. And this cycle repeats as Society gradually undoes itself, Everything falls to chaos, and the Screwmlins tighten the choke chain until those very same animals who were once the world leaders are lucky to be allowed to be Slaves to the Screwmlins.

The judge from Misbegotten Kittens 6 - Lazarus Next 3/16 and Misbegotten Kittens 6 - tPotS 2/12 makes a return, ...
Screwmlins are apparently a take on "the wealthy". Who cares about the poor, the wealthy are the only people that matter.
the rest of the populace is only good for slave-labour and should be happy for that.
Nyrufa
3 days, 16 hrs ago
It's been explained in the lore that the Screwmlins lack the mental capacity to even comprehend WHY their behavior offends other people.

So when their slaves rebel against them and try to topple their regime, they're totally confused by it.

From the Screwmlin's perspective, everything they do is perfectly reasonable and justified. If you have a problem with it, then that means there's something wrong with you.
LeNeant
3 days, 15 hrs ago
so pretty much analogous to "the wealthy". What, poor people rebel, and want to oust us ? Why, what did we ever do to them ? They should be happy for serving us, earning a pittance and paying us rent, from the little we pay them.
Genom09
3 days, 15 hrs ago
Yip. It is their logic. For them, it is completly normal logic and behave. Good if say so. And it is create doubts. Is their genocide really a good thing, just because they think differently?

An excellent point, but in my mental confusion, the rich cannot be rich unless they make the poor poor. Eliminate the poor, how are the rich going to continue to be rich? I point that out from the female(?) Screwmin's comment dismissing those non-screwlins who had died from this pandemic. She should be seeing it as a diminishing of potential resources and not as a dismissal of a problem that solved itself.

Also remember that, as Lazarus found out, screwmlins aren't motivated by wealth, but by religion. All the harm and death they cause is in honor of their goddess of Deceit. For them, wealth is a means, not an end.

Meanwhile, I notice that we get a semi-origin story for Libuse.

Oh, that's the face of a man who has his doubts confirmed, terror at the level of resolve of a close friend, deep and immediate introspection, adoption of a close friend's resolve, and ethical consideration of those around him.  He was a good man backed into too many compromises.

Fun fact, they're based on a bug species that is so damaging to other animals that some zoologists argue that their extinction would be beneficial for the environment.

I find it interesting that the chief and the judge both possess the same necklace. It is also noteworthy that from our limited perspective no others have it. my memory stinks, but i don't remember anyone else having it in previous chapters.

I also find it interesting that he seems to hold it like a rosary or some other religious item for comfort of some type.

Odds are Fenris Spatz from chapter 2 would have worn a similar one (with the symbol of a different chaos god), but my lore wasn't developed enough back then.

This scene right here reminds me of a scene out of the Wheel of Time series, when Rand is having a theological debate Shai'tan, and Shai'tan shows him what the world would be like without his presence as a delineator of evil - one of the simulations he shows Rand is the entire world without a conscience, because there is no concept of evil anymore and thus shooting a child in the back for stealing a loaf of bread is perfectly reasonable (actually the scene described, yes).

The Screwmlins seem to basically be that, but turned up to 11.
SenGrisane
1 day, 17 hrs ago
That inablity of Screwmlins to comprehend how the "lesser" species think is a huge blind spot. The ones who are best at exploiting/manupilating other people and staying in power are those that can read others and know their motivations.

And I think the story shows how that inability bites them in the ass again and again. If any terrestrial species would have taken over the world, they would have way more failsafes and protections in place against a populus that is clearly despising them.

Mr. "Pacemaker" here only got so far, because the guy at the scanner was not completely loyal.
When the Screwmlin summoner got plunged into his own hole (hehe funny out of context) the one that did it only managed to get there because the summoned demons had their own plans.

I find that the inability to understand that different groups have different, often opposite goals (in this case, screwmlins killing everyone vs. not letting them kill everyone) is one of the main reasons for every short-sighted group's demise.
