The cubs didn't know any better. They just thought it was a costume that Uncle Max had hanging up in the back of his closet, hidden behind all his normal clothes. Inquisitive as they are and lacking any sense of propriety, they pulled it out and began to play with it and try it on. They weren't much bigger than Max, so it fit perfectly. Michael was very much into the whole superhero motif and wanted a suit of his own. Nina was nervous and felt they should return it back to the closet. It wasn't theirs to mess with.
Least to say, Steven walked in on them while visiting and discovered their find. What started off as a plea for forgiveness and not to mention it to Max, Steven had a better idea. The cubs didn't know about Max's past and the fact he performed many vigilante acts under the tutelage and guidance of their mother, Murana. His 'costume' was very much, in fact, real. He had killed people in it. He had gone through awful situations while wearing it. None of these things did Michael and Nina need to know. They were just fascinated with the look of the suit and wondered if they could get one of their own - actually, it was primarily just Michael asking.
After some discussion and much forced brotherly coercion, Steven convinced Max to 'dress up' for the day and make a full family photo op out of it. Taylor was embarrassed for them all since she knew the truth of their mother's hidden identity and what Max had done. Yet, the innocence of cubs could not be contained. They wanted to be 'superheroes' like their Uncle Max. The adoration in their eyes was palpable. Taylor didn't have the heart to say no. And so, Steven got his way and makeshift costumes were made for Michael and Nina. The adults kept the truth a secret. Let the cubs have their fun and make it a family memory to remember.
