...no, you're not.

Everybody is an artist nowadays...after downloading AI image generators. The internet is flooded with AI-generated art and people, who says "I did this". No. Not you. Typing some tags into a text field does not make you an artist. Sometimes I enjoy AI art, but when one of these people shows up saying "this is MY art" - it grinds my gears

THIS WENT WAY TOO FAR! LOOKS LIKE I HAVE TO CLARIFY THAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE WHO GENERATE A PICTURE FROM "0" AND CALL THEMSELVES AN ARTISTS!

Playing devil's advocate here. AI art programs are tools like any other. I've seen some artists use them to help edit layers and other tedious tasks.

You're a bad advocate. Because I was talking only about art generators

Asking AI to generate an image for a reference or background filler is a completely different thing from asking it to make art in a particular artist's style and then doing tiny tweaks and posting

I used an ai image generator to make a very specific thing I couldn't find a reference image for. However it was for personal use and I only sent it to a friend. I agree, ai art is does not makecyou an artist, it does however, provide a very useful base idea for scenery that a real artist could build off of. My favorite post I've seen is "you think ai artists aren't real artist? Imagine spending 4 hours fine-tuning a prompt just to get the desired outcome and having to look through hundreds of different results to find the right one" it was something to that effect

This just now inspired me to do a drawing of an artist wannabe. What I have in mind is pretty funny.

No AI-Art I ever seen of things I typed into it looked anywhere near what I would want it to create. Artists's touch is what make my ideas I have look great, not the art-generation algorythm.

yeah. I have actually used AI art for my phone's wallpaper or just for fun. I've never did anything to claim it was mine. I always say "I fed an AI and this is what it gave me."

Nothing on my profile's AI generated though.

AI is just a tool, like any other in an artists' toolbox.

Instead of rejecting AI for making artists obsolete, you should learn to use it to your advantage; a good artist should be able to use it to make their job easier. Its no different than a writer using a word processor and printer to produce a manuscript, or using the internet to do research.

In any event, you'd be better served to embrace AI because it isnt going away... if you try to stand in the way of progress you'll just end up being defeated, demoralised and forgotten, like all the luddites and NIMBYs who took a stand against equally unstoppable forces.

its entirely different, a word processor just fixes grammatical errors, who vs. whom turning im into I'm, things like that. Both a printer and a word processor still require the writer to have the talent to tell a compelling story and the ability to understand and create things like foreshadowing and subtext. AI art is nothing more than writing a few words, picking a style and pressing enter. there's no skill, there's no talent.

To be fair you usually have to write a *lot* of very esoteric descriptions to get anything remotely similar to what you actually want, and it needs to be trained on extremely extensive datasets. Just telling it to draw something in someone's style doesn't output work that's presentable in any way, it requires a *lot* of effort and  tweaking to get anything actually presentable, and usually long, drawn out prompts. It's fun to generate silly stuff if you don't mind having crazy mutations tho, but nothing I've ever seen generated with AI alone outside of ***very*** specifically engineered prompts and datasets was by any means not immediately obvious of AI art.

This is the only sane answer in this thread. The rest is just a ton of butthurt and fear mongering.

People can embrace a tool or throw curses at it. But the ones who experiment with tools rather than shun them.

Perhaps 3d art shouldn't be considered art since any fool can arrange models.  I say this only as an example of course. One to perhaps help fisky notice that others would happily declare him a non-artist for the tools he uses.

When we gatekeep creativity based on the tools used it serves no purpose.

"Sane answer"

Commenter says it's muh progress when the progress isn't even legally sourced. Progress is when people decide to use machine image generators to spread deepfakes of humanitarian problems. Progress is when you can't even reuse the water to cool down your servers so you end up wastng more usable water than an entire state's worth. Progress is when fifteen outsourced workers, who try to moderate the millions of fucked up inputs, from Africa strike for better conditions.

Maybe try to figure out your argument? Your post is run on gibberish and barely makes any sense.

Point I'm making is the "gibberish" are all the problems the ones manufacturing machine-learning are causing. If you somehow happened to never use the inernet enough, you can find them pretty fucking easily.

Luddites were named that because the discovery of automating cotton and wool led to a massive docking in their living wages. Artists are already underpaid worldwide and machine-learning is just amplifying it, don't pull shit out of your ass without knowing where the toilet is.

Plus, machine-learning art can't even generate for shit if it hasn't parasitized on existing art. It wouldn't be where it is without the thousand years' worth of progress artists have made. You're all making it so easy for capitalists to undermine the process of art.

How is it in any way similar to using a word processor? You still type each word letter by letter, as if you were writing it by hand. This is the kind of sheer, gormless stupidity that AI proponents are so known for.

I always love it when someone shows up to a convention and shoves a sketchbook in front of a digital artist and they look confused....

I remember talking to a famous furry artist in 2006 who was a traditionalist shit talking artists who use computers, calling them not real artists because they cheat using line stabilizers. Don't be that person.

However, most people I know who do AI don't call themselves artists. They state they're using AI and make it for fun. I like the term "director."

One person I saw is disabled and loves art but can't do it due to motor skill issues so he uses AI as an outlet and still does quite a bit of adjustments in Photoshop.

Are people douchebags for using AI and hiding it and claim to be an artist? Yes. Is that everyone? No.

I don't share AI generated art, but I totally do use it as fap-material generator for myself ;)

That being said, the latest photoshop includes a generator - useable both for generation and inpainting. For most graphical tasks I think these networks are going to become a standard-tool. And there is a lot of grey-area between "I just gave a prompt, the AI did the art" and "I am an artist, I did this" -- like sketching the scene and have the AI color it, or style-change it. Or using the AI for fixing lighting/shadows/background. Or inpainting - have it fix that elbow/hand you just can't get the proportions to look right, but then coloring it yourself...  (granted, most AI still sucks at hands/fingers, so right now that wouldn't work ... yet )

Calling it "AI art" IS AN INSULT TO ART ITSELF!! I totally agree those people are Lazy retards that can't take a little bit of time to just LEARN HOW TO DRAW!. when you se how much it actually costs in time and effort to actually do things thats when you truly appreciate ART! I salute you fellow artist!
