EDIT: Yes, yes---I colored this one with the computer after saying I wouldn't (long story). Suffice it to say I uploaded the original uncolored scratch art yesterday. It was up only a few minutes before I deleted it. I wanted to correct a small issue (don't worry, there are still plenty of issues left to bring me shame) and figured I may as well color the damned thing while I have Seashore open ...so, I did. :P
Anyway...
Seems Gene is trying to convince Tasli of something. I wonder what it could be...
GENE (emphatic): "I'm telling you, the Water Pet will move around and talk whenever it gets near water!"
TASLI (wicked glee): "Cool. Let's burn it!"
GENE (annoyed): "No, Tasli! It could be alive!"
TASLI (doubtful): "I don't think so; I've never seen it move"
GENE (unsure): "Why not shower with it and see what happens"
[later, at Tasli's apartment]
TASLI (singing egregiously off key in the shower]:
"I'M SINING IN THE RAIN/ JUST SINGING IN THE RAIN WHAT A GLORIOUS FEELIN'/ I'M HAPPY AGAIN!"
TASLI (to reader): "I actually DO sing, but I'm really bad at it, so I save it for the shower!"
TASLI (resuming his song):
"I'M LAUGHING AT CLOUDS/ SO DARK UP ABOVE THE SUN'S IN MY HEART/ AND I'M READY FOR LOVE"
[later, at the clothesline]
GENE (mystified): "It didn't come to life for you?"
TASLI (displeased): "No, it didn't!"
WATERPET (somberly; to self): "I've heard things that can't be unheard..."
The Water Pet will be passed along to each of Gene's friends. The pet will next be introduced to Mimi. Will this be the comic in which we FINALLY get to see Mimi undressed?
...YES, YES, YES! I'M TOTALLY GONNA DO IT! I'M SO TOTALLY GONNA DO IT! YES, YES, Y---wait ...I'm acesexual; I don't care about that sort of thing. :p
Welp, I guess that means the Mimi cartoon (which I'll get to eventually) will be SFW (so don't get too excited). ^^
And of course Mubba's introduction to the Water Pet will follow---will we finally see Mubba without his helmet ...or does Mubba shower/bathe with it on? (such mystery!)
I actually have the Mimi story written, but I don't have Mubba's yet, so I don't truly know what will happen. ^^
Pencil...
I bought some pencils with Japanese writing on them. These don't have a JIS stamp, so they're either REALLY old or fairly recent ...I'm going with 'fairly recent'. ^^ Either way, I had no idea what was written on the pencils, so I asked my watchers over on DeviantArt.
I was advised to use Google Translate to find the answer. Apparently, one can drag an image to Google Translate and it will read whatever text it finds ...hypothetically, anyway.
I got some mixed results (depending how I adjusted the color/rotated the image, the translations would change). Here's some of the results produced,
"Emperor Soxian queen mother Yuge/ It seems that this is the time for people who are not comfortable with the light of the polished ball"
"It seems that this is the time when Empress Dowager Shoken's poetry was harassed by the light of Kazubatama"
"Akinori queen mother Song/It seems that this is the time for people who don't want to go to the light of the polishing ball"
"yellow/It seems that the hearts of people who are unkind are also like this"
"Empress Dowager Zhaoxian control/It seems that the light of the polishing ball is like this even in the days of people who are not good at it"
"Empress Dowager Zhaoxian/The light of Mikakazubadama seems to exist even in the days of people who are not good at it"
...Yeah.
So I decided to find a human who could read Japanese to translate it. I decided to find someone on Neopets (of all places).
I received two replies; these are they:
NEOPET1: "i found it in a digital copy of "Imperial Japanese Poems of the Meiji Era" . the english translation there says:
'The unpolished gem No slightest lustre showeth To prove it of worth; The mind of man neglected Reflects no light of wisdom'"
NEOPET2: "The top says 'Song of Empress Sho' (Shoken Kotaigou 1849-1914)
The rest is a 'waka' poem written by the Empress
'The light of the mikakazuba ball seems to be hidden in the heart of a person who does not have it.' (The heart of a person becomes more wonderful by putting effort on it)
A poster on Yahoo Japan where apparently Yahoo Answers is still a thing offers context:
'Among Empress Dowager Shoken's poems, most of which were composed for the education of the people, were composed by replacing the quotes of Western Enlightenment thinkers, such as Benjamin Franklin's 'Autobiography'. This song 'If you don't polish diamonds, the jade's light will be rough It seems that the hearts of people are also hidden behind her'
So, in Franklin's collection of quotes, there should have been the original saying, 'Diamonds must be polished, too'.
I want to become a country that is recognized by the world as soon as possible by adopting Western ideas of enlightenment. The Empress Dowager must have been cooperating with the government who was working hard.
The song was also melodyed and taught to be sung by children at school.
A more elegant translation has already been given of course, but here is this for you anyway, in case someone interrogates you about it"
...Oh my! :o
I have six of these, including at least one with a different 'waka' poem written on it. I think 'll let that one keep its secret. ^^
You know, I actually took one to the shower with me for a couple minutes, to see what it would do when wet.
The Water Pet will actually fill with water a bit, giving them a (temporary) 'plush' appearance. So, the commercial isn't TOO deceptive, albeit it shows the pets as 'full' when they're yet clearly dry. :P
Also, these take an AGE to dry. I can wash, say, a flannel shirt in the sink and hang it in the shower stall to dry (as I've done many times) and it will dry overnight. Not these (and that's after using a towel to press the water out).

I can't imagine it being a typo. In general foxes aren't too interested in coal, even for barbecues. (They're propane or nothing.) Foals however often pique their curiosity, even BEFORE they're cooked. Stay away from brony foxes, they're fonies, and they'll steal your precious innocence.
