Some things just aren't complicated XP. If an idea is pushed from the outset with intimidation, malice and severe consequences for so much as questioning it, you know it's bullshit. It's just shit, right out of the gate.

I never thought, growing up, that I'd be in the "Don't trust your lying eyes and ears" part of a dystopia.

I've argued points online, and showed people photos, videos, or double-blind randomized studies, and they'll call me a stupid sheep conspiracy theorist. "That's not evidence!" They do not believe in an objective reality. You can tell that, if an authority figure has not told them to believe something, they cannot process it at all. They don't believe that an individual can use their own judgement. Truth is determined by majority consensus of the experts. It's both terrifying and heartbreaking. Like seeing someone so completely owned by their abuser that they'll break down in tears defending them.

Some people are so wedded to their falsehoods that they reject evidence which conflicts with their narrative--including evidence previously provided in support of it.  For instance, show environmental advocates the sheer volume of failed predictions of disasters from Earth Day 1970 to present and watch their eyeballs spin as they try to square that circle.

I think it's exactly comparable to how, when doomsday preachers predict the end of the world, and the day comes and goes without the world ending, the cultists' faith increases. Because you're faced with the choice of either acknowledging you believed something foolish, or doubling down on it. And if you've made that belief a core part of your identity, it's gonna be way harder to dig up so much of your foundation like that.

Concur.  One of the reasons Christianity is still around despite the "Jesus is coming soon!  Be ready! Get saved!  And give us money to keep telling the story!" always ending in disappointment.  Or as one person long ago observed, "Why doesn't God just kill Satan?"  Which prompted the reply, "Because then we would have no story to tell."

The truth of the matter is that Satan will die, but not on the whims of simpleminded humans bound to three-dimensional space. The fact that sin is so ingrained in the natural order, that should the Devil be destroyed, time and space would die with him.

That which can be asserted as beyond our capacity to experience may be dismissed without concern as non-existent.

"Damnation is the start of your morality, destruction is its purpose, means and end. Your code begins by damning man as evil, then demands that he practice a good which it defines as impossible for him to practice. It demands, as his first proof of virtue, that he accept his own depravity without proof. It demands that he start, not with a standard of value, but with a standard of evil, which is himself, by means of which he is then to define the good: the good is that which he is not.

"It does not matter who then becomes the profiteer on his renounced glory and tormented soul, a mystic God with some incomprehensible design or any passer-by whose rotting sores are held as some inexplicable claim upon him—it does not matter, the good is not for him to understand, his duty is to crawl through years of penance, atoning for the guilt of his existence to any stray collector of unintelligible debts, his only concept of a value is a zero: the good is that which is non-man."

Rand was many things, but a theologian was not one of them.
Humans, in a state of nature, are violent and selfish... yet you know how we ought to live?

Rand was an Atheist. One of my favorites of her quotes was that she didn't have time to keep up with the sheer volume of mystic publications because there were so many new ones every day and they all copied and contradicted one another, even within the same faith.

Humans are unique in the animal kingdom in that our survival is only possible by thinking, and thinking rationally.  Only the lowest and most primitive dwellers are "violent and selfish".  It's man's capacity to reason that sets him apart, which is why I say:  start there.

I know she’d contracted a different strain of the virus that had taken over her native country. I agree with her on most matters concerning economics, but when it comes to the stuff like the international church… that’s where she missed the boat.

Exactly.

People's favorite fallacy now is the fallacy of origin or genetic fallacy... No matter how much video, photo, audio or written legal proof of something there is... If it doesn't come from their pre-approved "sources" it must be fake and wrong.

Or they believe their side so much that when you show them literal evidence that goes against what they believe, their eyes will glass over and they will not even try to comprehend what they are seeing.
AlexReynard

This is why, a lot of times when someone asks for proof, I give them enough details to where they can search for it themselves. If they bitch, I say, 'Sorry, but I've played this game too many times before. Only you know what sources you'll trust, so look it up there.' And if they won't even try, that also serves the purpose of showing me they're arguing in bad faith.

There's a great meme out there showing a Trump rally with thousands of cheering fans, right next to a Biden rally the same day with only a couple dozen people.

Fact can withstand the existence of falsehood.  But falsehood cannot tolerate the existence of fact.

Don't need to die to lose your liberty, this cartoon isn't about dictators killing people. You can be arrested and prosecuted here for questioning someone's gender claims. "Oooh look, there's a country over there that's worse." Is not a valid reason to ignore evil in your own back yard.

oh don't get me wrong - i'm not saying the West is a paradise

people in the UK get arrested and prosecuted over cannabis

Marjorie Taylor Green recently bragged about how she would vote against supporting the Ukrainians

in Turkey you can get four years in jail for saying "fuck Erdogan the moldy old cunt"

Netanyahu has just swarmed the Knesset with a rabble of low-down theocrats - the very same vermin the Israelis have been fighting against for over fifty years

and i've just read a journal a few days ago from a French IB artist who had been harassed by the French gestapo for drawing cub porn

it's plain to see - behind the facade, the West is crawling with Putins and Ayatollahs

I have said this in SO many comment section arguments. You can shut me up by showing me that your view is better than mine, but no amount of insults, threats, or emotionally-manipulative insisting is ever going to work. There is no amount of temper tantrum behavior that can be piled on the scale and make it equal a truth.

Nearly as irritating is when someone has the truth on their side, but resorts to name-calling anyway. Like, if you behave the way people without the facts behave, people are more likely to believe you're one of them. And a well-made point that actually gets listened to can be demolished by tacking on a pointless insult. People want to feel like they won more than they want to reach mutual understanding.

Pretty much.  If you look at history, the REAL civil rights movements were ACTUALLY peaceful protests (not the riots being called "peaceful" by a lying media), speeches, and demonstrations.  Meanwhile, the bad guys in the situation were using fire hoses, dogs, assault, the media, and jailtime to silence them.  Not only that, but throughout history, the BAD GUYS are the ones doing all the censoring of dissenting opinions (see: literally any dictator ever)  But this is why they not only ignore history in every way they can (see: socialism/communism) but they also attempt to rewrite history to suit their narrative (see: "party switch" hoax, not acknowledging that "Nazi" meant "National SOCIALIST Party, etc.)  Top it off?  You can't say ANY of this or even have open discussions with anyone right of center, or else the mob will either come and attack you and try to "cancel" you (ask tato) or they'll get in their little far-left echo chambers and block you at every turn.  How can they honestly see themselves as "the good guys" when they take pages straight out of the "Dictatorship 101" playbook?  If their opinions and viewpoints carried any weight, they'd bring them to the debate floor and be civil, but under the microscope of facts and evidence, most of their arguments crumble, so instead, they must shout everyone down, shut down events, and cancel those who stand up to them.  This is what happens when you raise a generation with NO discipline, never telling them no/letting them always get their way, and enabling their worst behaviors at every turn by protecting them from any consequences of their actions, both in the household and in society, and then letting the media raise them for you.

You need more power than whoever is crushing dissent.  You can't just be weak or the truth won't be communicated.  Communication is necessary to spread the truth.
