Going out of chronological order for a bit, Ronin dates back to about 2004 and Dream (sometimes under other names) to 2006. Ronin Catholic, the devoutly Christian samurai kitsune. Dream Woman/Dream Lover, the appearance I would consciously choose in a mate given the choice (my subconscious mind apparently prefers snow white fur to cobalt blue and mustelids to canines, not that I've ever been picky).
Ronin was made exceptionally tall and buff literally to stand out from a crowd, considering most heroes of the time (especially in anime and animesque works) would have a slender athletic build; all Spider-Mans, no Supermans. "Huge and muscular" is also not a typical depiction for anthropomorphic foxes (and Ronin wasn't my last to be such). Ronin's coloration in prose writing was described as "mostly pink, like a sunset" - his body was supposed to be like an anthro fox shaped bit of sunset sky moving around, fighting, talking to people, and wearing armor. Ronin was also a major kami (or "god"), spiritually tied to the concept of freedom/liberty and the elements of sky (wind, storm, thunder, lightning), and as one ought to he gave praise and glory to the God who created these large and powerful things he embodied. At times he'd have only one wing - being the spirit of freedom, his left wing was particularly prone to infection and damage, needing to be severed and regenerate from time to time lest the infection destroy the rest of him. Yes, this absolutely is and was an allegory for Western politics, and is only more pertinent today than it was in 2006. Ronin had four tails sometimes, though being a wind spirit they'd often merge together into one very large, extra fluffy fox brush; I didn't know at the time about the Japanese pun of four and death being pronounced the same and thus superstitions about the number four, though if I did I'd totally have embraced it. The reason he wasn't a full nine tailed fox? A fox's number of tails is a marker of his wisdom, and even when my fursona was literally a god in the vein of the type of being pagans worship, I was still very humble.
Dream was very briefly going to be a plain, naturally-colored vixen rather than a deep blue wolf. The name Vixen was used as a placeholder, then I felt an urge deep inside to name her Rebecca/Rebekah - but I'd also met the first girl I liked online around the time I was writing that chapter and chickened out of naming the character that in specific in case my crush had a different name. Turns out her name was Rebekah and as usual I showed a lack of courage and backed down from where I was being lead. I started referring to the dream wolf girl by my crush's username, and later characters Largesse, Becky, and Aine were also explicitly based on (my clouded perception of) her. Not only did I not really have much of a chance in the first place, my lack of drive, confidence, and ambition were extremely off-putting - if, at the time, I was working at a factory or an auto garage or something instead of a super minor part time dishwashing job I'd likely both have been cultivating the better side of my personality (thus, attractive) and had outwardly visible potential as a provider (thus, attractive).
The character was the elemental of earth - and contrasting typical expectations of slow heavy-hitters, was an agile and elegant dancer. The deep blue isn't expected from "earth" just as the bright pinks and purples aren't the first colors people think of for "wind", but likewise there's an explanation: cobalt as a mineral, very very blue. Also an ocean blue fur with grass green clothing looks like "earth" in the sense of the globe, not of soil and stone. Sky Father and Earth Mother.
Anyway, the woman I'd convinced myself was my soulmate at the time spent five years giving me the runaround, always saying she might change her mind or might be persuaded - the possibility being left out kept me laser focused on trying to impress her. The "so you're saying there's still hope" meme personified. This, my formative experiences had told me for twenty years, was how romance was supposed to work anyway; that a guy is supposed to ask out a girl he likes even if she's out of his league, and if she doesn't explicitly say no, to keep trying.
This basic blue anthro canine would crop up from time to time as a placeholder for years afterward. I'd say Dream is also one and the same with my other intentional placeholder character named Ych.
