This couple was inspired by amusement at the notion that a married couple tends to take on the husband's surname, so having people for example expect to meet a vixen but instead be greeted by a small mouse seemed funny. I had around the same time another idea for a scenario where a neighbor knocks on the door to a mousehole and expects to find "Mrs. Mouse", only to be greeted by a weasel.
I had other, cruder, more mechanical reasons for designing this couple but they're best left behind with my old life.
