When using animal symbolism as a metaphor for human sexual and romantic relationships, this is one of the more common setups: Using different species as a contrast between the fundamental differences between men and women, using a predatory animal as the man and a more passive herbivore as the woman he pursues.
While depicting soulmates as the same species is far and away the most common (and for good reason, as it maps to reality) this metaphor is a good distant second place, I'd say. It's also the one that's taken me the most effort and acclimation to "get" deep down, as I'll explain on tomorrow's piece.
Another thing relating to this specific pair is that male rabbits and female ferrets are both biologically compelled to breed or die; I considered pairing Tina with Benny for that reason, but decided in terms of personalities and the ways the characters were generated that I had better mates for both of them than satisfying that meme. My desire to pair male rabbits with female ferrets always left a question in the back of my mind though, that of what to do with the male ferrets and female rabbits who don't need to breed, but very likely still want to.
