Whoa. For some reason I thought you only did cute things.

Sometimes, stories have to be dark.
Balmung

Indeed! Not complaining, just was a bit of a surprise.

I agree with this. If there are never dark stories the cute sweet ones have less of a feel to them.

holey crap this "doc" is a raving quack. Of all the people who Should be locked up this nut bar should be at the top of the list. [Props to the artist for the great writing of a character]

Looks like it worked, though. Perhaps the ends justify the means? 🤔

Wow, someone I hate more than Aileen now….

I dunno. The hard truth is that at some point, human- well, furry- trials for such a thing would have to be implemented, no matter how many simulations or nonsapient test subjects were used. The fact that there was an unexpected effect on his eyes is exactly the type of thing that necessitates it. And she is being very clinical, doesn't seem to be taking pleasure in his pain.

No anesthesia, on a captive "patient" all in the name of "research"... Why does that sound strangely familiar?
Silveryfox
4 years, 1 month ago
But this Doc did use a form of anesthesia (in the previous page). She used Analgesia, which makes the patient lose the feeling of pain while conscious.
Shryke
4 years, 1 month ago
Perhaps, doc never did say what the pain effect would be, even though analgesic does refer to a pain killer. Regardless, Zaggy sure looks to be under massive stress, be it physical or psychological. I still maintain this doc is as moral as Mengele.

"Test #24, full disembowelment. Restoration time-lapse six minutes forty-five seconds. Side note, subject was still able to scream rather loudly dispite absence of lungs."

I like this comment more then I think I should. XD

Can't help but picture this from the nanites point of view.

"Phew! Yeah that sulfuric acid has nothing on us!" *very tiny high fives*

"Hey wait is that a hacksaw? SHE'S DOING WHAT!!?"

One nanite driving all the others nuts constantly singing. "Thirty trillion cells in the bod! Thirty trillion cells! You cut some off we stick'em back on! Still thirty trillion cells in this body!!!"
CuriousKit

Wow, that doctor is a compete sociopath. I can see how it would desensitise Zaggy in time. "Hey, I've had my leg cut off with a rusty blade. Your shiv has nothing on that!"

It's worth noting in the previous panel she said, "Beginning Analgesia", She at least had the decency to give him some sort of pain medication. Or am I reading this wrong?
DrJavi
4 years, 1 month ago
No, that's correct. The experiment was scary, but completely painless.
Baree

I am very glad you clarified that.

I'm reminded of that scene from the movie Felidae. :D

But wait, won't this mean he can't build up muscles? Or get fat?
InkTheseNuts
4 years, 1 month ago
Man.. I wish there was at least a way to bring back his thing and healing his snout somehow. So at least those scars aren't there are not anymore there, because they are the bust brutal in my opinion.
Shryke
4 years, 1 month ago
I bet Rayco can, now that he knows what is going on…
InkTheseNuts
4 years, 1 month ago
Well i hope. The magic didn't worked so many they use technology instead? Using his current body as a model, then they change the model and so the nanites will take over that form maybe.
Silveryfox

I wonder what happens if the subject is decapitated? Does he grow a new head back and have no memories of himself anymore? Or is he incapable of being repaired after that?
DrJavi
4 years, 1 month ago
Surely the head would regenerate completely, memories and all, in what I presume would be the most mentally agonizing few minutes anyone could ever experience.
Shryke
4 years, 1 month ago
This brings up many questions, depending on your metaphysical views… would it be the same person? We like to think a caterpillar is the same being as the butterfly but that is not the case. Or for a more geeky approach, every time Picard  beams down somewhere, his body is agonizingly atomized and an exact copy is built in his place at the landing point. The “original” Picard was atomized decades ago. If you believe in a soul……. Where did it go…….

I hope, I pray, that whatever ends up for Zaggy and Rora, that they maintain continuity of form and continuity of consciousness… I see current Rayco as being a different being than original Rayco due to the “explosion”…. Hope Zaggy and rora don’t do that……
Silveryfox
4 years, 1 month ago
If that is the case, then the body is probably being kept alive by the nanites. Which means he is technically in a medically induced coma, till the head is fully regenerated.

Even if there is a positive response to the treatments, torture is still torture. He makes Mengele look like a good guy.
MiscreantMutt

I wonder if this is related to the nanotech attack on the Americas that triggered the Extinction.
DrJavi
4 years, 1 month ago
I think it might be. Details on Dr. Nge's research will be given in chapter 6, so I'm still deciding what her part on that was.
QueenSaryala

Since the leg decomposes and is rescued to regenerate itself by the nanites, why is the doctor still covered with his blood? Wouldn't the blood also be infused with nanites? Or is that amount of blood loss effectively negligible?
DrJavi
4 years, 1 month ago
If you look closely, you can see that the blood also gradually disappears.
QueenSaryala
4 years, 1 month ago
I did notice that the blood on the floor around the leg had disappeared, though it was much harder to tell on the doctor's gloves and apron. but I can see it slightly. so I assume the nanites carry the blood airborn? cause it seems they aren't migrating to his body from her's. Or it's just they're taking longer cause it's all soaked against her apron.
DrJavi
4 years, 1 month ago
They take time and have some tolerance, they're willing to lose a few drops here and there, but in the last two panels her apron and gloves would be pretty much clean.
davidjohnson
4 years, 1 month ago
" This is not torture, officer.

Yes, sure. Sit down in his place and have your other leg imputated as well and repeat that, with conviction.
Rakaziel

She is the type that would not care, if she trusts her calculations.
davidjohnson

Still it's different when you're the one passing through these tests. The psychological feeling it's still overwhelming.
lerwin
4 years, 1 month ago
I think if they could get all the nanobots out of him he could be restored like everyone else, but lets be honest with the size and function i imagine that would be especially difficult.
lerwin
4 years, 1 month ago
Alright so I just noticed that the dr is missing a leg and that she went out of her way to test his leg by cutting it off.... unsure if it will matter story wise but well yeah. it's even the same leg she is missing that she cut off him.
