I'm not sure if rats can catch malaria. But surely various pathogens would adapt to preying on different anthropomorphic species. Gwendolyn traveled on a ship of all rats, so any disease could potentially take down everyone aboard.

Aww that is really really sad. I can really get a feeling that the memories of this particular recollection weigh really heavily on Gwendolyn particularly, losing her mother like that...damn. All of these expressions are just so damn heartbreaking.

It was very traumatizing and shaped who she is. Even though it was a very short part of her life, those childhood years are something else.

My heart goes out to Gwendolyn's father too.  He looks to be devastated.

reminds me of a line from Negima, "Magic isn't a miracle cure for what ails you/"

the little reaper shadow on the mosquito is terrifyingly potent at portraying what's to come. and gwens face in the final panel is... honestly it's horrific even for watching a loved one die in front of you it realy evoks how bad her mother had it before she passed... youve a real talent for expression not just an emotion, but the depth of that emotion with your faces.

Thanks man. The mosquito and reaper came out exactly how I wanted them to look too. I don't draw creepy all that much, but it turned out good.

It was chilling and malaria still has one of the biggest body counts even with modern medicine  so the implications truly potent

A hard page to read, but it does what it needs to do very effectively. Panels 3 and 5 are particularly moving. Gwendolyn focusing on her food during the story shows how she's come to terms with it, mostly. Hope you find the time in THIS story to explain about elementals and their limitations, and get around to explaining her ever-present collar too! If it's an all-rat ship there has to be a "rats abandoning a sinking ship" gag somewhere in its future...

Gwendolyn has had multiple lifetimes to deal with her childhood horrors. But like she told Chucky earlier, she only had one childhood and it's with her forever. I'll try to explain more about her being an elemental at some point. The quick explanation is that her magic allows the manipulation of naturally occurring elements. But her extra long life has allowed her to adapt her elemental magic to other uses. Good examples are her hypnosis and sleeping spells over Chucky early in the comic. She is not a hypnotists, but she's learned to use her elemental magic to temporarily disrupt the natural functions of his brain, putting him into a hypnotic trance. So basically, she found ways to 'hack' other spells.

From that even of Gwendolyn‘s mother passing from the malaria, is that why Gwendolyn lost her ability to remain calm and positive?

(Asking that because I kept thinking Gwendolyn hardly smiles)

She's not big into smiling, and she's just generally very introverted. Gwendolyn, then and now, spends a lot of time in her own head. The fact that Chucky made her smile a few times during the comic is a big deal. The loss of her mother affected her view of the world more than anything.

"The loss of her mother affected her view of the world more than anything."

The loss of a parent for any child, is not something they should face, at least, not until much later in life and when said child is no longer a child.... and yet.... for some.... even when no longer a child.... it's still not an easy thing to face.

And now I see why Gwen is so introverted.
