Yes, but I'm glad it was harsh. I can understand both of them.

It did seem the only options available were the ones that they had put on the table...

Bureaucracy at its' finest.

Familes so scared that things would become worse with the government's participation,
that they commit unspeakable things just to keep a status quo.

I hope poor Barbara had mercy for those young women.
PlaneshifterLair

...?
Why would Barbara have mercy for them? She wasn't involved.
DrJavi

That's exactly what I was going for! But yes, Barbara didn't even see those girls, she had no fault in this.

Sorry to be a jerk, but yea you need to read it closer there. He said the wolves got rid of the evidence, not the beast. The local feral wolves ate the girls not Barbara. Sadly that would also imply that the girls died at the paws of their own family, most likely their father or older brother was the killer.

...B'yeah, you right.
Somehow I missed that through my first read. My bad.
Thank you for the correction, though, I appreciate it.

Personally, I would not have let that shrew leave the building alive. Death can only EVER be repaid by death. Anyone saying different is at best a fool, at worst a liar.
PlaneshifterLair

So you would kill them... then you should be killed yourself, since death is repaid with death? (?)
Goldwing

If that's what it takes, absolutely. I may be several things, but I will not be a hypocrite.

That...sick bastard
Having your offspring killed by wolves..that sick...HE IS A MONSTER!
DrJavi

"Regular people too can be monstrous."
Vawkis

Former active duty, doc..I'm aware what evil, some of us..monsters can do.
Just, that...the idea of killing your own offspring instead of trying to find another means for them to live
That's..sickening. Even we military beasts have standards and that's just...no

Neither condoning nor condemning here, but when you look at the options the father put on the table here, what he thinks are the only options, obviously... murder your own daughter, or sell her into the sex trade as young as she is... which is more evil? Ending her life before she's really had a chance to live it, or give her a long life of being some rich guys plaything?
He probably honestly feel he, and the other fathers, did their children a favor.  We're just seeing from the outside in, not actively feeling the strain of poor harvests he does.

That's why you don't educate peasants, they get principles and ideals. Better have dumb as rock ones who dun care' if the good count boinks little Jane.

Ouch. That really hurts. And yes, your expressions are perfect. Now who's the real monster--!

I kind of agree with the farmer here. Not so much that girls are weak and can't do farm work (if we take into account how long you have to raise a boy until testosterone kicks in during puberty, you're still tending to an extra mouth for years before it's useful to pull its own weight, so I don't see how that is preferred over a female that can mature much faster), but more because there is nothing to be proud of letting the rich care for things that aren't theirs. This farmer's daughters would very well be used as holes rather than respected and raised as individuals. I don't agree with the farmer but I see where he is coming from and can't really blame him making that decision to sacrifice the young rather watch as they grow up under another guardianship and used as sex toys.

well this reminded me of an episode of Law and Order SVU, specifically the one where the woman made her son kill his little brother because she didn't want him to go into the foster care system, thinking it would have been a fate worse than death
Sugarable

That's just awful. She couldn't even do the dirty work herself, though? And made her older son do it? Yikes.
angel85

that's how she planned to get away with it, she manipulated her older son (who was still a minor) to kill the younger one so that she wouldn't be charged with the murder and the kid would theoretically get off with a light sentence.  It all fell apart when the oldest brother (who did go into foster care where she had told her other son he was raped and murdered by child abusers) came out of the woodwork and the son immediately turned on her and revealed the whole thing was her idea.

People must have monsters in their lives, otherwise they can only blame themselves for what they do.
Cyandog182

Sad thing.  People can become so entrenched in traditions they will sacrifice babes to keep those traditions around. And they have such a poor opinion of everyone else that they think death is preferable to letting their "kinfolk" be raised different.

Gascon's face in the last panel just screams understanding mixed with "I... can't fix this".....

Your expressions of emotion are quite spectacular Dr. J!

Maybe "the beast" can shame them all with the truth?
MooseJam

If the 'beast' came in and began to speak not only revealing who she is, what happend to her and began to shame them for what has been done...
