The only real change to Classic Amy's design is that her sneakers have been replaced with her own version of Classic Sonic's.

Basically, I'm running with the whole "Girl Sonic"/Sonic's female counterpart idea.

Amy Rose was originally created to be Sonic's girlfriend.  The relationship would mirror that of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.  However, Sonic isn't into romance... no matter what some media would lead you to believe...  So, instead they made her a girl with a crush on Sonic.

Don't get me wrong.  I believe that Sonic can be charming and a gentleman.  And playfully teasing a girl does seem in character for him.  But something just feels wrong when he's portrayed as romantic.

That being said, what if SEGA did go along with the original idea of Amy being Sonic's girlfriend?  The following is my take on Amy as Sonic's love interest from the start.

After the events of Sonic CD, Amy continued to chase after Sonic.  Knowing that Amy would continue to get into trouble, Sonic took Amy under his wing.

Sonic not only trained her to run faster, but he taught her the basics for the Spin Dash and the Super Peel Out.  She was a hedgehog, so rolling into a ball should be natural for her.  He then told her to continue training and to have these moves mastered by the time they met, before running off.

Sonic thought he wouldn't see her again for a while, but he underestimated Amy's natural talent and her ability to track him down.

When the two met up again, Amy revealed that she mastered his moves and her Piko Piko Hammer.  And wanting to prove that she could keep up with Sonic, she decided to tag along on his latest adventure...
