A young Petroshka the rabbit arrives in america with a cigarette in hand and a surly attitude for any would-be gawkers to boot. He ain't nobodies bitch but being poor he's no stranger to turning a favor for a quick buck, provided it stays on the down low. But make no mistake, its just good business, and this little scamp is willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead on these mean streets. One day though he'll be living the dream and hopes to snag an attractive american girlfriend along the way ...

"Whacha looking at ye dirty old coger? What, you like whacha see? If you were expecting me to come from Russia with love ferget it ... ... unless you jus happen to have a wad of C-notes burning yer pocket yer willing to part with, american currency only, then maybe I'll lift my tail fer ye and letcha have yer way. Petroshka is perpetually weary of life ... things tend to go badly for him. He keeps his sanity by maintaining a grim and dismissive cynicism. Hes one of my darker and more complex characters. hes not meant to be "pretty" but he has a certain rugged charm to me.

Actually, now that I think about it ... Petroshka would probably be quite the pretty boy. He's actually quite small, lithe and delicate (he makes up for this by having a tough no nonsense persona). The problem is, because of his big mouth and his diminutive stature he's always getting the shit beat outta him. Hence the blackeye he always sports. The lines under his eyes are due to excessive smoking and not taking the best care of himself.

I agree about the "rugged charm" part.
I am curious, if someone by a lot of chance ends up being consider friendly by him, does his character change or he keeps the though act ? ^^

So Petroshka has a very thick and prickly exterior that is hard to get through. If someone is friendly to him his first instinct is to be suspicious of the person and be put off by it. He thinks you either want something from him or, if you are male, he'll suspect you are queer and say as much. If you persist and he sees you genuinely mean no harm he will soften up a bit. He switch to making snarky comments like "So your a fan of my 'winning personality' (sarcasm) or you just a sucker for punishment". He'll make some jabs at you but this won't be as mean spirited as those he makes towards those he hates. It's actually him trying to offer you advice and help you ... in his own blunt and mean sorta way. When he starts to like you back is when he might start to be awkward about his own feelings. "It's not like I like you or anything, I just thought I'd help a fellow out. Just trying to not be a complete piece of shet. Don't read too much into it". He has a very hard time admitting his feelings to anyone. Underneath though he actually can come to have very deep and loving feelings for people, especially those he recognizes as outsiders or the downtrodden. If he really likes you he will in fact become your most ardent defender. He will risk life and limb to save you at his own peril. He will take on your bullies and fight them off with the only weapon he has ... words. In this way he redirects the ire from those he cares about to himself. He can't talk about his feelings, so he shows them through his actions, through his loyality. On the surface his words may not seem to friendly, but if he really cares about you then he actually is trying to help you learn how to hide the things that make you different and teach you how to survive in the cruel world. Is he right in this? Well it's the way he sees things. He sees certain things as stuff you keep to yourself. It's how he lives himself and how he tries to survive.

I wanted to add, that the only time Petroshka can truly open up with his feelings ... is when he is absolutely sure it is just you and him and no one else can listen in. Even then it's whispers and awkward admissions. But he can be a very passionate lover and a very good friend once he knows the coast is clear. Briefly you see his sincere side and the snark will be gone ... until you say something to annoy him and then he'll go right back to it out of reflex. But it won't last. Again it takes a long time for him to feel safe enough to open up like this, and even then he still can't completely stop putting up his defenses from time to time. He is essentially the "jerkass with a heart of gold" architype combined with "deadpan snarker". He's a tragicomic character. He is both someone you can feel sympathetic/sorry for, and someone who is entertaining as a silver tongued wisecracker. There is something both endearing and hilarous about his constant irritability, at least to me. He's a fun character and I do hope to eventually write some stories with him.

In a "wow you didn't complain for a whole minute, that is awesome" kind of way, then i'll laugh like an idiot and eventually get kicked XD
