....is one you can walk away from. But a great landing, is when you can use the airplane again. This actually happen to me when I was learning to fly. When I taxied back to take off, sure enough, there were the airplane's tire tracks in the dirt. But there were other sets too, so I hadn't been the only one to do it. Either way, I'll never forget it and it made great material for this comic.

And this, my boy, is why training planes have dual controls!  A very realistic sequence, and no doubt common when learning to fly. Doesn't look like the plane actually got damaged, so it's all good, Chucky. Go try again!

Let's hope he didn't damage the under carriage.  He put a lot of stress on it.

"Oh well!  Any landing you can walk away from...  ...geeze!  Look at that plane!!"

I like the fact that you seem to have done a little research here.  I'm not sure why it is, but light planes do tend to bounce a little if you come in too fast or at a sharper angle.  Of course, I say this solely from my experience with flight simulators, so...  XD

Ha ha, thanks. I'm able to speak/write from experience. The suspension of many small airplanes, especially Cessna's line, is a simple flexible metal frame that both main gear are attached to. The airplane that Chucky is flying has the same type of gear.

A small aircraft such as that shouldn't need to touchdown at the very tip of the runway Chucky. Infact, you could land several yards into the landing strip and still be able to come to a stop well before reaching the runways end. You gotta relax Chucky.
(Some of the planes where I work sometimes actualy touch down about half way down the runway. Of course, the runway can also support Boeing 747s And even the Airbus 380s.)
Chucky

I like the fact that if a 747 or A380 is light, it can actually land in a fairly short distance.

I would have done the same thing quite a few times if my flight instructor hadn't taken the wheel before i actually landed x3. Man I miss flying.....

Aw bummer, you couldn't stay in it huh? Did it get too expensive?

Apparently when i started taking medicine for my migrane headaches, i couldn't keep my medical up....
Chucky

Sorry to hear that. Yeah, the medical can be an obstacle and sometimes a dealbreaker.

That would be a case of the instructor letting the student go just a bit too far! One of the things the Air Force really emphasizes is that you do NOT try and save a bad landing. As the saying goes, "Go-arounds are free."

And it's not just light air planes that bounce. C-130's will bounce pretty impressively, and I've definitely bounced the C-17 at least once. In which case you go max on the throttles and take her around!

Yep, that was quite the screw-up on Ian's part, I was wondering if someone would notice.

O.O never really experienced any of this but im really getting interested in flying planes now O.O!
p.s. is it me or do the tires look a little flat??
iFailed
13 years, 10 months ago
they probably are a bit under inflated to give them more resistance to blowout from a hard landing, they are still training, you do everything you can to not only protect the trainee but also the equipment. replacing the tires more often is much cheaper than having a blowout damage the rim and possibly more, and if it happens at an away airport repair costs would probably be higher too.

at least i think thats sound reasoning for them to look flatish :P

The first time for anything is always a major stress. The secret
as you said is to get right back to it. Beautifully done. :)
And I'll say it again: I like this comic for the sex but I
LOVE it for the story! And the characters! :D

Always fun to see there's a new comic up. Also, on that note, there appears to be a lot of technical details in this that are pretty impressive to hear and find out to have serious, real life reasons. I've got relatively little (read: none) experience and knowledge about airplanes but they are interesting. This comic does make me want to do my own research and find out more too.

As for Chucky, awww. He managed to ascertain he's still got a friend but even that relief wont make the rest of his day perfect huh? Well, a life without conflict and problems is a boring one, and these are not unrealistically cruel ones, they are steps along a path towards becoming closer to the ideal self he has for himself in his mind.

Although Chucky's beating himself up a bit too hard mentally in my opinion, but that just makes him seem more real. Getting hung up on a failure can make someone like that. Sure hope one of his friends cheers him up later. Nonetheless, loving the comic, and cant wait for more once again.
Chucky
13 years, 10 months ago
I certainly intend to add a bit of fun science fiction to this, but I'm going to keep it as real as possible. I want to stay as true as I can to technical details, not just to impress people and make it more believable, but for myself too. I'm just generally into this stuff.

The comic spent a lot of time focusing on Chucky's pursuit of girls, but I want to show that he has some serious academic challenges ahead of him too. And in a way, those can take sudden priority over getting laid if you're really serious about what you're doing. Up until now, things have been going pretty well for Chucky academically. But a new nemesis has reared its ugly head.

Another great page, I am also really enjoying all  the attention to detail!  In the first panel there is an aircraft reminiscent of a Piaggio P-180 Avanti, an awesome little aircraft!
As for bad landings, your comment section rings true, you MAY be able to use it again after a nice visit to the structures dept.!
I have had a few 'hoppers' too, and once I touched down (slammed down more like) so hard that the headband on my headset  slipped down over my eyes, effectively blinding me! My only good early landings were engine outs, cause I used to fly gliders, lol!
Chucky looks soo cute when he's all dejected, I really felt for him!!
=^.^=

The Piaggio P-180 is a cool airplane, louder than shit, but a cool airplane. Ha ha, that's funny what happened with your headset. I'm sure mine did all sorts of things too. How much glider time do you have? I've got a bit myself.

how long does it take to get a private polot's licance and what are the medical requirments?  i have been pondering the idea for the last fiew years.
Chucky
13 years, 10 months ago
Thanks Kale, glad you're enjoying it. I believe the minimum for a Private Pilot's License is still 40 hours of flight time, and within that 40 hours are certain skills you have to master. It takes most people a little longer than that. If you fly every day you could get it done within a month. It took me 70 hours and over a year because I was only flying once a week, that's all I could afford at the time. It is a tad on the expensive side, but lots of fun if you're into it.

In Canada, there is what is called a recreational pilot permit, you can get with only 25 hours (15 hours dual instruction required) and you are limited to certain airplane types, number of passengers, and can only fly in the daytime in good weather and not cross the boarder... It's entry level, but you can upgrade to a higher license easily, but you can still get endorsements for floatplane Etc... Minimum age to start is 14 but you can't hold a license until you are 16... Gets you in the door, so to speak!
I don't know about the states, but you can join an air cadet squad in Canada and get your license through them for free, both glider and powered planes!!
Chucky
13 years, 10 months ago
We've got basically the same thing, recreational pilot's certificate with about the same restrictions. I think you're also limited to a distance of less than 25 nautical miles from your home airport.
