SILENCE!

Chippy is speaking!

...or, rather, Chippy is writing. Even so, the reader yet hears my voice in their heads as they read these words of mine (and, I must say, I wonder what I 'sound' like), but whatever---we're here for Tabaqui, right?

This is kinda a 'Ferret-styled' drawing of Tabaqui from Chuck Jones's production of 'Mowgli's Brothers' (1976), but what can be expected from my first attempt? :P

Tabaqui was a minor villain in the Mowgli story---more of a nuisance, really. The character was cowardly, and sycophantic towards Shere Khan (likely to secure some of Khan's leftovers for himself).

Tabaqui didn't have a representation in Disney's 'The Jungle Book', unless one chooses to accept Kaa (the snake) as a substitute there (Kaa was very different in the books---in the '67 Disney adaptation, Kaa is, effectively, Tabaqui).

...Anyway

I like Jones's version of Tabaqui. For one, jackals aren't as commonly seen in animation as the hyena that Tabaqui sometimes appears as (like, in the Japanese anime 'Jungle Book Shonen Mowgli'). For two, I like Jones's design, which does bear an uncanny resemblance to Wile E. Coyote, with perhaps a bit of Max (from Jones's 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas', which preceded 'Mowgli's Brothers' only by a year). :3

What I don't like about Jones's version are the designs of most of the other characters. Tabaqui, Khan and Mowgli are fine, but ...what's with the wolves? They look like sheep, specifically like the sheep from Disney's 'Lambert the Sheepish Lion'. Seriously, just compare the two (Bagheera and Baloo don't fare much better!) D:

But one thing I do love from the Jones production is Mowgli's speech at the end. It's intended to be taken deadly serious, yet I find it hilarious---there's just something about the execution of the drama!

You can judge it here, but fair warning: you'll have to skip to about 4:48 to see it (link tested 03/25/2020): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KjjwRibMGc

Also, if one wants to see a really awkward Jungle Book adaptation, here's the Bevanfield version (link tested 03/25/2020): https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6pk2gt

Anyway... Tabaqui!
