The homeless in my area (Saint Paul, MN) are the same way. First they want a cigarette, then regardless of whether or not you give them one they want money. Then if you don't give them money they get all belligerent and start demanding that you give them something, like they're entitled to your stuff by virtue of being homeless.

honestly. I don't mind giving a dollar to someone who's just shy of being able to eat. I DO mind paying for someone's smokes. I'm a nice guy, but don't ever try to take advantage of me. I've been in that situation. starving, barely able to afford the necessities to live. but if you got there because of drugs, get out.

I've heard it from a old timer once, that back in the 1930s, there were those who were kind enough to let a transient come into their house to rest and get a bowl of soup. Any transient who received the generosity would, upon leaving, make a special mark on a door jam or gate with a pocket knife which let other transients know "this is a place to come for a rest and a meal".
