~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What the kids had  colloquially named "the old building" of North Trouville Jr. High was essentially a wing once used specifically for the elective classes. It had been rendered obsolete about a decade past when the Clerk building was erected to host the theatre classes and the Starpoint wing went up to hold the multitude of art and technology classes. This was during a brief economic boom when the school had such money to improve with. Now the old building seemed to be essentially a crumbling storage locker filled with ancient art projects and extra gym equipment but it was common for an industrious kid to slip in the halls for a brief smoke or mischief; free from prying eyes.
The old teacher's lounge was especially popular given that it still had most of its furnishings intact, albeit a little scuffed and damaged. The walls hosted spiderweb shaped cracks that weaved among the multitude of now-yellowing posters. "Deirdre the D.O.N.T. Dingo says Weed is Whack" one poster read and the charming mascot stared vacantly over the room. Another poster, that seemed age innappropriate, had what looked to be 7 year olds bouncing on a trampoline giving victorious cheers, the 7 year olds had to all be in their mid 20s now, given the style. Above the poster in bold writing: I LOVE ART, which was cleverly graffitied to read I LOVE fART. Clever.
Devi and Koudelka had found the abandoned teachers lounge a suitable place for them to get away in the morning to hang out and study together, free from judging eyes and conspicuous whispers. This was now their morning ritual throughout the week, Devi would show up first with her huge thermos of coffee to share and she would set up their work. Koudelka would show up usually 10 minutes later.
On Wednesday, deep in the throngs of what was being called 'the Trouville storm' (a week of spotty overcast and drizzle: some storm) both girls where amazed that they had no work left to do, so with some coaxing, Devi agreed to let the culpeo do her hair while she went over a few of their assignments, just to be sure.
Furiously, Koudelka stroked the brush into the wild tangle of black hair atop Devi's head; listening to the little bunny make little squeaks of pleasure. Some people where tender headed, but Devi was the only person Koudelka had even seen to be "pleasure" headed.
"Dying your hair is seriously the worst thing you can do to it - especially when you're wearing a silly beanie, Devi." Koudelka sighed and slid the brush downward.
"Says the girl with the bleach job from hell." Devi snickered; macking mint-flavored gum loudly and looking over Koudelka's creative writing paper. For being 'in the closet', Koudelka was really bad at hiding her flowery descriptions of girls, to wit Devi chuckled. "She slid the stocking along the slender length of her ivory fur clad leg, eh?"
"It's called 'being able to write properly', you rube!" Koudelka scowled and hissed; yanking the brush with a little more force.
"Whoa, did you just call me a sandwich!" Devi laughed and blew a tiny bubble with the gum as she did.
"No, I called you simple... you're thinking of a reuben... which is exactly what a rube WOULD think... you... ugh." Koudelka tossed the brush aside, it was fortunate that Devi's hair was very clean and smelled so lovely, she simply would not put up with the work otherwise no matter how much she liked this bunny.
"I just noticed something super crazy, Kody!" Devi said and rolled her neck back so she could see her companion's face. Kody staggered at the sudden eye contact but was getting pretty good at keeping her gaze firm regardless of how much her stomach twisted anxiously. Someone said being in love felt like butterflies in the stomach but Koudelka felt angry wasps.
"Um... yeah, what would that even be?" The culpeo narrowed her eyes and finally looked elsewhere.
"Pavlov!" Devi chuckled and made a few more smacking noises cutely with her gum. "You're a Russian, that's adorable! I never noticed the accent."
"That's because I don't have one, lots of kids have foreign surnames... like Randelle!"
"You know my last name?" Devi giggled and rotated on her butt to pivot; fully facing Koudelka. The fox instinctively pulled her legs up to give the rabbit room, and she hadn't fully adapted to having physical contact yet.
"I-... yeah.... of course I do." Koudelka muttered and folded her arms.
"That is why we make a super perfect couple! Now say 'cyka blyat'!"
"Co-couple? And no, ugh, that's like racist!"
"Cyka Blyat! Cyka Blyat!!! Saaaay it!" Devi snickered. "And yeah, couple, I mean... like... if you wanted or something. I know me touching your boobies doesn't immediately make us a couple but it probably could."
Neither of them had the ability to make eye contact with the other for a moment; Devi hung on that pause nervously and Koudelka searched her developing lexicon for something to say.
"I don't really know what to say, Devi..." Koudelka murmured.
"Say you like me?" Devi smiled hopefully and found enough courage to place her hands on Koudelka knees and lean forward.
"I do like you. I like you a lot. "Koudelka nervously glanced into Devi's eyes and they both saw sincerity. "Heck... um... sorry for swearing, but I like you a frack-ton and like more than anyone. You remind me of my nan."
"Awww, you compared me to your grammy. That's creepy and sweet!" Devi tilted her head to smile. "And, dude, I reaaaaaallly like you too, a whole lot."
"Then you understand why we can't... um... go out..." Koudelka mumbled sadly.
"No, see thats the part I'm not understanding, Kody you totally like me! So... I ...you know... you, so why can't we be together?" Devi's rasp had such a small whine.
"Well, first of all, there's my friends.--"
"Shallow bitches who don't understand you, Kody you read Frankenstein, have any of your friends ever willingly read a book?!"
"No, but if you think they're bad now, I promise that the second they got wind of us that would be the end of our social li--"
"Fuck social lives, I just want you." Devi paused as she gulped. "Look, I get it. You and I are from different sides of the track, I'm an outcast and you're like some promqueen preppy...."
"You're such a lame-o Devi, prom hasn't even happened, how could I be a prom queen?"
"Uuggghh... and you're so weird, I love it! You say cute stuff like that and I want to kiss you and--"
"Well you may, if you really wanted to." Koudelka brushed a loose bang from her face aside. "We have like 20 minutes before class and--"
"Nergahfa-la-la-la!" Devi gibbered incoherently. "That's beside the point! I want to know what the problem is really, it can't just be your friends."
"Okay, well then there is Austin..."
"Fuck your 'boyfriend'... well not really but you know what I mean."
"Dev, I don't like him like that, but it seems cruel to just leave him for someone else like that, shouldn't I just wait for him to lose interest?" Koudelka could feel her body tensing up more and more as this conversation progressed. "I read that a breakup just makes the person want the other person more."
"Amen to that, but fuck him! He's a pedo gross dick lord who is probably going to rape you or something if you're not careful."
"He's not bad like that, where the heck did you hear that stuff? A pedo?"
"Aria. But THAT'S BESIDE THE POINT!"
Kody looked down sadly, honestly she had worried about Austin like that. He was so much like her dad it was scary and yet, here she was making excuses, she really hated herself suddenly. "I.... I'll break up with him soon, I am just not ready for that, you know people will talk and--"
"Stop making this about them though! You're really saying you won't be my girlfriend because of Austin and some preps? The ones you even told me you don't really like?"
"Well... no... there's my dad." Koudelka couldn't maintain eye contact with Devi anymore. "He would probably send me away and seriously try to hurt you and your family."
"Oh..." Devis ears went low. "Well, my dads and I would kill him but if he sent you away first then that'd be a problem." She sniffled solemnly.
There was heavy silence.
"Cyka Blyat." Koudelka said incorrectly but sincerely with a smile causing Devi to snicker with hot tears streaming down her face.
"Wha-what?" Kody's ears dropped. "What does that mean... something like 'I like you' I think since 'cyka' means--"
"It means 'bitch whore'." Devi giggled.
"Ohmaigod! Devi! You made me say .... oh no! Nooo." Kody's face turned bright red as she slapped her hands over her mouth so quickly they looked like only monetary blurs.
"Did you still want to kiss me?" Devi asked sheepishly smiling bright. "With that filthy mouth?"
With wide eyes and hand sealed over her mouth, Koudelka nodded.
Despite being "non committed" and "not technically in a relationship", both girls twisted their bodies warmly on the rotten couch; their lips mingling in slow succession as the gum passed between them, stopping only for some quivering breaths and smiles before carrying on. The old building was so isolated that even if someone came, they would hear footfalls minutes ahead, and so they remained entwined, familiarizing one another closely to the taste of the others mouth.
It was Devi who broke first, lovingly twirling a finger in Koudelka's long spindly forelock and watching as the hair sprung perfectly back into place.
"Sooo... the other night when we first kissed. Didja do anything when you got home?" Devi snickered playfully and rested her chin on the foxes collar bone.
"I had a bath and went to bed to read... why?" Koudelka naively responded.
"No I mean like... did you... y'know.... do anything?"
"I read." Koudelka repeated.
"You're no fun." Devi humorously sighed. "I MEANT DID YOU DIDDLE YOURSELF?"
"What?! Nooo! I can't do that!" the outrage in Koudelka's voice was so alarmingly apparent. "I'm supposed to keep my hands above my sheets anyways."
"Hmm. Hmm. Tell me, is your dad a Christian?" Devi raised an eyebrow condescendingly and took on a psychiatric tone.
"Well I don't see why that would matte--"
"Cuz I did it a tooooon." Devi interjected. "Much diddling. Very good."
Koudelka looked like she had seen a ghost as she tensed up; her shoulders practically reaching her ears. "Why would you tell me that? That's so intimate!"
"I touched your boobies a lot." Devi shot back quickly. "That's pretty intimate too."
"Yes but still!" Koudelka stumbled on her words; chewing on her gum frantically.
"By the way, dude." Devi pointed at her. "You're chewing on my gum, there."
Koudelka froze and slightly lowered her head; opening her mouth slowly and letting the gum plop to the floor as Devi giggled to herself.
"Fine," Koudelka took a deep breath after composing herself. "If you must know." she took another breath. "I did consider it."
"What, that you were chewing on my gum?" Devi asked. "Cuz uh... you were. There's no 'considering' there."
"No! No, no, you fool." Koudelka exhaled loudly. "I meant uhm. I considered masturbation... just a teency bit."
"Aside from how lame it is that you just said 'masturbation' like that--" Devi threw her hands up. "WHY DIDN'T YOU DO IT?!"
"I don't know?!"
"It would've been super hot knowing that I did that to you, you know!"
"MAYBE?!"
"MEEEE!" Devi sat up on her knees on top of Koudelka; beating on her chest. "I'm pretty hot, I think... but uh. Not even my ex ever did anything like that when I wasn't around." There she was, bringing up Nova again for some reason. Why did she keep doing that?
"Uhm." Koudelka looked side to side. "Perhaps I was just... perhaps I would've rathered you did it to me as opposed to me doing it to myself?"
There was a long moment of silence between the two.
"THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU LET ME DO IT WHEN WE WERE ACTUALLY TOGETHER?!" Devi humorously raised her voice in an overdramatic way.
"I DON'T KNOW, I WAS SCARED?"
"I'M NOT GONNA BITE." Devi paused. "UNLESS YOU WANTED ME TO."
"Why would I want you to bite on me?!" Koudelka naively stated. "That's like eating me! I'm the fox h--"
Devi's eyebrows raised as she tried to stifle a smile. "No, please continue."
"You tried to trap me in a sentence." Koudelka squinted her eyes in suspicion. "And here I was about to admit how much I liked you but you are just a sneaky, sneaky rabbit creature."
"And you're a fox that eats small rabbits." Devi nodded with a condescending smile then leapt upon her companion; playfully cuddling her.
Unfortunately, not everything was going Devi's way. Within the cafeteria, an unusually tall and bulky lioness -- who Devi wasn't even aware of -- was brewing a perfect storm of ire and discontent.
For the past two weeks, she had been the subject of constant beratement and abuse from her fellow classmates. For being tall and wide and a little more masculine than she'd prefer, she was centered out as being a lesbian which was entirely false because she did have a boyfriend. The problem was, her boyfriend did not go to the same school so it was difficult for her to prove anything.
As the torrent of accusation and insults spread, it seemed everyone went to assume that she was romantically involved with some rabbit bitch named Devi. This 'Devi' made it a point to frolic around the school with her buttons of gay pride and that pride caused the lioness' tormentors to connect the two.
The lioness, Ruby, sat with her dwindling group of friends; brooding at the glances she was getting all across the cafeteria.
"I'm seriously about to kill someone," she muttered to her rat friend. "Please stop me from doing that."
"Uh... don't do it?" the rat, Sarah, spoke in her traditional drawl; always sounding like a mixture between a southern belle and a trailer park residence. "'sides, it's not worth being expelled."
"I kind of don't care at this point." she took a sip out of her juice box with a blank glare forward.
"How about this," Sarah pushed her oval glasses up, "Everyone is expecting you to go all brute-crazy and, if you do it, it's just gonna make it worse. It's literally what they're making fun of you for."
Sarah had always had the tendency of being particularly blunt but, for whatever reason, Ruby didn't mind when Sarah called her a brute. Maybe it was because Sarah still invited her over to her house.
At some point, Ruby had noticed that Devi-girl's friend, Aria, walking towards them. Ruby was expecting Aria to stop and talk to them but she just passed on by which really dug under her skin.
"HEY!" Ruby nearly surpassed the volume of the collective chatter of the cafeteria. Her voice was always somewhat deep and commanding but it was frightening when she toned it like this. "Aria!"
The golden retriever stopped in her track and turned around casually; carrying her tray of 4 milk cartons and 1 juice box and that's it. "Yyyyyeeees?" she asked with a lethargic smile.
"Where do you think you're going?!" Ruby instantly regretted that; knowing how stupid and cliche it sounded but it was the first thing that came to mind.
"Uuuh. To my normal seat?" Aria snickered a bit. "You know. With my boyfriend. Hint. Hint."
"Bitch, don't you give me any of that shit." Ruby grumbled and clenched her fist; knowing that Aria wasn't just talking shit. She really was going to go sit with a guy -- a luxury Ruby wasn't much familiar with at this school.
Aria gently set her tray down at an empty table next to her and calmly sauntered towards Ruby; unintimidated by  her sheer size. "So. What's going on? Who pissed in your..." Aria looked at Ruby's tray. "...I see you're already drinking piss."
"FUCK YOU, YOU DICK."
"I guess you would think I'm one of those," Aria rolled her eyes. "Figuring you've never seen one in your life."
Ruby had no idea how to respond to that -- which just led to her fuming silently with her eyes clenched shut.
"So uhh..." Aria sighed. "...I've had a really annoying morning so can I just leave and continue my shitty morning? I got milk over there. I like it cold. Room-temperature milk is gross. Right?"
Sarah stood from her seat at this point; the scrawny and tiny little thing she was not even reaching Aria's chest. "Going back to your previous point, dog." she calmly stated. "Being the whore you are, I don't think you really have a leg to stand on with the whole 'seeing a penis' thing but you know. Whatever."
Aria raised her bushy eyebrow at the little shit. "I guess you would think that." Aria repeated. "Seeing as you've never seen a dick in your life."
"FUCK YOU!" Sarah screamed.
"Looks like I've triggered this table." Aria spun around and walked towards her tray to pick it up. "My dad's gonna get really annoyed if I get suspended again so uh." she flipped Ruby and Sarah off. "See yaaaaa."
"Hey! HOLD THE FUCK ON!" Ruby commanded; actually standing up this time. "The reason I told you to stop was so you can tell your dyke friend to stop saying shit about me!"
"My dyke f--" Aria looked up and then started to laugh. "Oooh, Devi. Okay, one, she doesn't say anything about you and, two, I don't think she's interested."
"I DON'T CARE IF SHE'S INTERESTED!" Ruby stomped her foot to the cement. "I'm telling you that if she keeps saying shit about me, she'll regret it."
"I hate to break it to you, Iron Ruby, but I actually don't even think Devi knows you exist." Aria took a more serious tone now that her friend has been mentioned. "You should probably just leave her alone because she doesn't talk to anybody. Now, if you're pissed that people are talking about you behind her back -- why don't you take a page from Devi's book and just not give a shit like a mature person? Unless you want to fight someone --  then I'll be sure to destroy you myself. But you know. Advice."
Ruby mulled it over for a second as it did make sense. Why would Devi be the one to make these rumors anyways? She knew, definitively, that it wasn't Devi but -- either way -- it was Devi's face that was attached to this whole mess. Something told her that if she did something bad to Devi then people would know they weren't a thing and they would stop this constant berating.
She, however, ended up saying nothing as Aria turned back around and headed towards her own table.
~~
Classes rolled by for Devi as she was distracted. Koudelka had been occupying her mind for the entire day so far -- constantly thinking to herself "Ahh, what a good day". Between classes, they had been secretely depositing notes in each others' lockers while scowling at each other when they passed each other in the halls.
It was also nice that Aria wasn't being too much of a pest about the whole lesbian thing. In fact, Aria seemed to be rather nice to Devi today. A bit more nice than usual. She didn't even say 'fagaroo' once.
"Is everything alright?" Devi asked Aria as they walked to class during their 15 minute break towards the end of the day.
"Uhh. Yeah. Sure." Aria nodded. "Though... uh... hypothetically... has anyone talked to you today?"
"That's not really a hypothetical question but--"
"I don't like English class." Aria muttered.
"But uhh... not really? I just talked to Koud-- Kody today." Devi corrected herself; knowing they were in public and someone might hear. "And that's it. Well, and you but you know."
"Ah. Okay then." Aria smiled and didn't follow it up with anything else.
Normally Aria was a Chatty Cathy and, considering Devi had mentioned Koudelka, she was expecting more of a response but didn't get anything. Very strange.
"Anyways, Dev." Aria said; taking a quick cursory glance around the halls. "I have track after school so... yeah. Just go home to your weird gay dads."
"Pfft, okay then." Devi giggled; figuring this was Aria's way of getting her to not spend time with Koudelka.
"I don't say this kind of shit a lot," Aria spoke up. "But you're sort of my best friend so, just uhh, if anyone picks on you then I'll go to jail."
Devi stared at her blankly. "Besides the gossip I hear about me? Sure."
"Alright, dawg. You're my homie." Aria cutely proclaimed; beating her chest twice with a goofy smile then scurrying off to class.
Devi watched her disappear and then turned to head to her own class; taking the long northern route which ran along a series of orange lockers that looked very out of place considering the sea of blue lockers all around it.
What was considerably strange was that Devi had an uncomfortable feeling growing inside of her. It was probably from how Aria had been acting but, for whatever reason, she was certain that she was being followed.
She upped the pace; too afraid to look behind her and turned the corner quickly. It was then that she was pulled by her backpack backwards. "Hey!" Devi heard as she nearly tripped on the slippery tile floor.
As Devi turned around, she was greeted by a large lioness and a tiny rat; both of them girls -- neither of them she recognized. "Uh... hey?"
"Devi, right?" the rat started.
"Y-yes...?" for all of Devi's casual attitude for most things, she wasn't very good with dealing with this kind of odd pressure. She always had her ex, Nova, to repel all of her bullies back home but now she felt vulnerable and alone.
It was all so dumb. Aria was LITERALLY JUST TALKING ABOUT THIS. That must have been why she was acting so weird. How long have they been following? Did Aria even know?
"You need to stop with all this gay shit you're doing," the lioness growled; leaning forward and giving Devi a deadly glare. "Do you know who I am?"
"N-no?"
"Of course. Uugh." the lioness rolled her eyes. "You've been making my life a living hell."
For a moment, relief washed over Devi as it seemed that the tone this person was taking was conversational. Perhaps this entire thing could just be talked out. Lucky, considering Devi was on the cusp of crying from this pressure.
"Everyone keeps saying that I'm a dyke and I'm shitty and all this crap and they keep. Fucking. Mentioning. You." the lioness squinted her eyes. "Because of this faggy shit you keep doing!"
The lioness reached forward and pulled Devi's beanie off. The rabbit barely protested from fear.
"These fucking buttons right here." the lioness stated; pointing out her gay pride beanie buttons. What Devi had never mentioned before was that these buttons had more than just the obvious 'gay pride' meaning to her. She had been collecting these buttons ever since she was a little girl going to pride marches with her dads. "FUCK THIS SHIT." the lioness took the beanie and shoved it in her backpack. "There. Now I REALLY don't want to hurt you because I'm not like that." she muttered. "But I will kick the shit out of you if you bring more of these fucking buttons and you keep talking about your lesbian shit. You got that?"
In Devi's mind, she heard a million snarky voices. She heard all of the coolest responses she could say to that sentence and show that she was some kind of badass or something. She could imagine herself taking a beating and having it be some sort of advocation for peace or something meaningful like that but the only thing she could do was weakly plead for her beanie back.
"Can I have my hat back...?" Devi croaked.
"No." the rat interjected. "Did you not listen to a single word she said, you fucking moron?"
"No more of this." the lioness repeated. "You have no idea how much shit I've been put through because of your bullcrap."
Devi thought about it. The hat was a gift from her ex, the buttons were gifts from her dads and even the horror buttons were mementos from her past. She absolutely couldn't let this girl take it but, being the dwarf hotot she was up against a fucking lion, nothing was going to happen.
"Can I... please have my hat back?" she sounded more like an obstinant child at this point.
The lioness and rat didn't give her the dignity of a response and ended up just turning around and walking away; leaving Devi in the corner as she slid down to her knees and trembled. She had never truly felt so naked without her beanie before.
There was a moment of nonsense where nothing was logical. Time either slowed down or sped up but, either way, nothing made sense to her.
After a small period of time, Devi finally found footing. It was shaky but she was at least able to stand. The kids who walked by never asked her if she was okay or why she was sitting on the floor anyways -- she had to get up on her own.
Confused, she didn't know where to go right away. She couldn't go to the principal because she had no idea who the lioness and the rat even were. Plus, how much would he even care about a stolen hat? He would probably just say 'well hats are technically against school rules anyways so...'.
She began to walk aimlessly away from the direction of her class in the hopes that she could think of her next step. Nothing came to mind.
Eventually, she resolved to maybe just find Aria's class but she had no idea what Aria's 6th period even was. Fuck. She had a loose approximation but, subconsciously, she found herself heading in the direction of Koudelka's locker. The students walking through the hallways began to dwindle as the first bell rang; a warning that they had 5 minutes left to get to class.
With whatever grace existed in this world, Devi was so happy to see that Koudelka was still at her locker; looking so radiant even through the blurriness of Devi's tears.
Koudelka turned around just to be met by a desperate hug which she fought a bit at first; trying to pry the rabbit from between her until she caught a glimpse of Devi's tear-ridden face.
Suddenly, the notion of their little secret relationship and how they were supposed to sort of avoid each other in public felt so... evil. Something about it. Koudelka was so conflicted in hugging this sad, crying mess clenching itself on her chest and she felt like such trash for even hesitating at all.
Devi began to let Koudelka go; realizing that she was jeopardizing their whole secrecy thing but, surprisingly, she was pulled back into the embrace by Koudelka. "Jeez, Devi, what happened to you?"
"I-I-I-I don't even know!" Devi sputtered loudly; sobbing without any shame.
"Oh dear. Your hat is gone." Koudelka muttered; rubbing the back of Devi's head. "I uh... didn't really mean it when I said you shouldn't wear that, you know."
Devi sniffled and looked up at Koudelka; her face contorted in a mixture of rage and desperate sadness. "Two girls took it from me and just... I don't even k-know why! I don't know what the fuck happened!!"
Koudelka couldn't think of anything to say and just ended up hugging Devi more tightly. They stayed together like that even after the warning bell had rung again.
Koudelka took Devi to the office so she could call her dads and get a ride home. It was very sad leaving Devi there like that but the staff of the office wouldn't let the fox stay so late after class had started.
At least they gave her a tardy slip.
"I'll try to come over soon, Devi." she muttered with a half-smile before leaving the office. She wasn't quite sure if Devi heard her.
~~
"Oh look. A wild whore has been spotted!" Aria jabbed at Koudelka for being late. Unfortunately, they shared a table with each other in their 6th period class due to seating charts.
Aria raised an eyebrow as there was no rise to the insult. Instead, Koudelka looked sad, dejected and kind of pissed off.
"Now class!" the teacher hollered down; the classroom was a maze of tables and huge, old computers. "Remember to let me know when you're all finished with the first typing exercise so that we may move on to the next. Also, I should remind you -- Jamie." she looked towards a kangaroo near the front row with one hand supporting her head on the desk. "That minesweeper is not a typing exercise."
Koudelka and Aria sat far in the back as fortune would have it. The golden retriever squinted with suspicion. "Uuuh. Did someone step on your shoes or something?"
"Someone did something to Devi, if you must know." Koudelka whispered with contempt.
Aria went silent; her playfulness completely vanishing as a frown slowly crept upon her face. "How long ago?"
"Between classes, I think." Koudelka answered.
"FUCK OFF!" Aria nearly screamed which brought the ire of her teacher down upon her.
"Ms. McBride!" the teacher condescendingly spoke. "Need I remind you that conduct like that is unbecoming of a young woman. I will let you off with a warning but if I hear that langua--"
"Okay! Okay, I'm sorry!" Aria huffed and slammed both of her palms upon her face with a loud sigh. She turned back to Koudelka. "Some shit literally happened the moment I left her for class?! Are you fucking kidding me?!" she was whisper-yelling at this point.
"I guess so." Koudelka sighed and Aria was taken aback at the real... genuine emotions she was seeing from this fox. It was so rare for her.
"For fuck's sake. I think I know who did it too." Aria muttered; grinding her teeth together. "You know Ruby?"
"What. Ruby and Sarah?" Koudelka raised an eyebrow. "That doesn't make any sense."
"I don't need to explain it to you," Aria groaned and then noticed something on Koudelka's shirt; causing a feeling of terrible dread. "What is that on your shirt?"
Koudelka looked down to see a smear of wet marks and eyeliner. Normally she would be extremely pissed that an article of her clothing was sullied but she was just saddened to see this reminder of Devi's crying.
"Is that blood...?" Aria shook in her seat. "That's Devi's blood, isn't it?!"
"What? Don't be stupid." Koudelka stetched out the fabric towards Aria's direction. "It's black. It's her eyeliner because she was crying. They did not seem to beat her up but they did take her hat."
"But she loves that stupid thing!" Aria whisper-yelled a bit louder than usual; almost catching the ire from her teacher again. "Fucking shit! I guess I'm gonna be suspended again!"
"Excuse me?" Koudelka glared at Aria with a bit of disgust. "What in the world are you talking about?"
"None of your business!" Aria thought about it for a second and then turned to look at Koudelka. "Ugh. You know how sometimes you pretend that you don't like something but you really actually do like that thing?"
"I-I guess?"
"Well I don't feel that way about you." Aria nodded her head matter-of-factly. "I don't like you but I know that Devi likes you so obviously there's something there to like. I just don't see it. However! I need you to make her feel better, okay?"
"Uhm. What do you mean she likes me?" Koudelka played stupid.
"Oh fuck you, I'm Devi's best friend you know!" she overemphasized the 'best' in best friend. "She talks about your stupid ass all the time. Well. More like your stupid everything but you know. I'm telling you this because you're a shallow cunt who's probably going to break her heart but don't you dare do it right now or I'll kill you too."
"You don't know anything about me!" Koudelka stood her ground. "Maybe I like her more than you know."
"Well good skittles on you, dyke." Aria scoffed. "You just do the gross lesbo shit with her to make her feel better and I'll do the actual hard work that a PERSON WHO CARES ABOUT HER actually can do."
"MS. MCBRIDE, MS. PAVLOV, IS THERE SOMETHING YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE CLASS?" their teacher roared from behind her desk.
"NO MA'AM!" Aria growled back in fury.
"Then please be silent and continue your work!"
"I THINK I WILL DO THAT!" Aria turned to Koudelka. "Fuck you."
"You are the worst person ever." Koudelka responded and they stayed silent for a long period of time; actually doing their work until Koudelka continued. "But if you could get her beanie back... that would make my opinion of you much, much higher."
"Like I give a shit about what a walking turd thinks about me." Aria fell silent as well. "But if you could just make her feel better after school then... my opinion of you will go up too."
"Like I care what a vagrant thinks of me." Koudelka snarked back.
"I'm not a 'vagina' or whatever the hell you just said," Aria responded. "And this doesn't make us friends but fine. Okay. I agree."
~~
There was a dull feeling of guilt for missing her track practice that day, but Aria skipped it in order to find Ruby and Sarah after school. There were only two ways out of the school and she had to be at one of them.
She was also glad that her 'boyfriend', Piper, was there -- both to keep her rage in check and to keep lookout with her. It was also beneficial that he could carry her bag while they waited.
"Do you uh... d-do you need help fighting this person?" Piper sheepishly asked; knowing the situation Aria was getting herself in.
"What. You're gonna punch a girl, fagaroo?" Aria mocked.
"Oh... uh... oh it's a girl." he already knew this. "Well, that's the only reason I wouldn't fight them then."
"Pfft, okay dumbass." the nature of their coupling was dubious but Aria was so enchanted by his awkward quirkiness. "By the way, if I'm not grounded later on, you wanna see a movie or some shit?"
"You're uh... asking me this before you get in a fight?" Piper raised an eyebrow.
"Yes or no, fagaroo."
"I'm surprised you're not gonna be hanging out with Devi or something." Piper rolled his eyes in jealousy.
"Yes. Or. No. Fag. Aroo." Aria sighed.
"Oh! Uh... sure, we can go see a movie." Piper smiled and wagged his shrew tail.
His crooked sharp-toothed smile made Aria smile as well... with her gap-toothed smile before she quickly added in: "Oh right, also pick up my homework for the rest of the week too."
"Ugh. Okaaay." Piper groaned in defeat; never being able to deny anything she asked of him.
"Kay, thaaaanks." Aria giggled chipperly. "I might give you a handjob too, fagboy."
"Wait wha?"
"Oop, you didn't hear what I said?" Aria turned her head. "I guess I didn't say anything then."
"No, what did you say?!" Piper hopped up and down. "What did you say?!"
"Shhh!" Aria silenced him. "I found them over there." she pointed ahead to what looked to be a giant creature in the distance.
"Wait... you're gonna be fighting that thing?" Piper put his hand over his eyes to shield them from the sun. "Seriously?"
"Well hopefully she just hands over Devi's beanie but, you know," Aria shook her head. "But she probably won't and then I'll have to kick her in the nose."
"Specifically in the nose?" Piper self-consciously covered his own nose; knowing how rough Aria could be.
"Or in the tit." Aria nodded happily. "By the way, Piper, if this does go badly -- can you please run?"
"But I--"
"Promise me, Forrest." Aria glared at him. "Promise me that you'll run, Forrest, run."
"Uuugh, fiiine." Piper, once again, unable to deny her requests.
From down the walkway, Ruby was approaching; moving with a strange and savage gape making her look more ape-like and Sarah was next to her looking as demure and weak as ever.
Aria was amused that ever since elementary school she had noticed this weird trend of bullies having a very weak leech attached to their hips. Then again, if anyone could call Aria a bully, she supposed Piper was her leech. Though, he was much cuter than other leeches.
Taking one more glance at Piper, Aria cleared her throat. "Remember, my homework, movies and run."
"Yeah, yeah, I got it." it was kind of funny. Piper had seen Aria in so many fights that he was more just concerned at how much trouble she was going to get into rather than how much she was going to get beaten up. He supposed it was just confidence in her.
The moment Ruby and Sarah got into earshot, with them obviously trying to avert their gaze from the golden retriever, Aria called to them. "Hey, cunts!" there was a huge, stupid and unintimidating grin across her face.
"What the fuck do you want, Aria?" Sarah asked as they stopped just several feet away from each other.
"I gave you some great advice earlier, you know." Aria crossed her arms as her tail wagged in excitement. "Why didn't you take it?"
Ruby and Sarah looked at each other; unable to answer.
"So why don't you just give me Devi's hat and everything will be okay." Aria requested; sounding like some cool, confident hero from a movie until she realized that she forgot something. "Oh yeah. Also apologize to her and then leave her alone, how about that?"
"I didn't do anything to her." Ruby lied through her teeth.
~~
This was probably the most conflictingly sad process of Koudelka's life. She had to get this eyeliner stain off of her shirt but she also kind of didn't want to. It almost felt like she was betraying Devi as she wiped it off in the girl's bathroom but she couldn't let her dad see it. She couldn't risk getting in the car with her dad and have him grill her about what made the stain and, no matter what, he'd be able to tell she was lying.
Once the stain was gone, she sadly left the bathroom feeling kind of empty, strange and she hoped that Devi was doing okay.
She thought about Devi from earlier that day when they were talking about their relationship status. Koudelka felt like a huge bitch for very gently denying Devi and all she wanted to do was go back and reverse all of it as if that would stop the bullying or something. She really didn't know what she wanted, actually.
As she walked into the parking lot, with most cars already gone, she sat on the stone lift that she waited for her dad with Devi the other week. She watched a few cars weave by before hearing something scuffling up beside her.
Startled, it was Aria who approached with that one shrew boy that always leeched beside her. She looked slightly battered with scratch marks all over her face and part of her shirt ripped but she looked very proud of herself while the boy looked rather terrified.
"Yoooo, cunt!" Aria pulled Devi's hat from behind her back. "One of the pins is a little cracked by uhh... I made sure to crack something of hers. Hehe."
"Who did you even fight?" Koudelka muttered. "Also you need to go to the nurse! What are you doing?!"
"No, I gotta go see a movie with Piper."
"Who...?"
"Me." Piper chimed in; looking awkward and clunky carrying two backpacks. "You've heard my name  bef--"
"WE'RE LEAVING NOW." Aria cut him off; giving Koudelka the hat. "By the way, make sure not to take the credit for getting the hat back."
Aria thought about it for a second.
"Actually, no, give me the hat back. I'll give it to Devi myself."
"No, don't worry!" Koudelka cradled the hat protectively. "I'll be sure to let Devi know. Besides, I'm no roughian like you so it's much more believable that you'd do this."
"Haah, you said 'roughian'." Aria put her hands proudly on her hips. "You know Kody, you're not that bad when I think about it. But then again, it's probably the adrenaline saying that."
"Or a concussion." Koudelka added. "You really should see the school nur--"
"Nnnnnope!" Aria laughed. "As you said, I'm not a whimp like you. See yaaaa! Oh wait, no, I'm probably gonna get suspended so uh... I won't be seeing you, thank god."
Koudelka sighed.
"By the way, don't let anyone sit in my chair during 6th period or I'll kill ya~" Aria swaggered an arm around Piper who almost fell over at the extra weight. The two of them then sauntered off like drunken boxers.
For whatever reason, Koudelka smiled widely and hugged the hat tightly. She simply couldn't wait to see Devi's reaction to having her hat back again.
Poor Devi. Never fun to deal with bullies, especially when they figure out your weakness.
Thank you so much for reading as you always do! :) We're very glad you enjoyed yourself. And don't worry, there was a deleted scene where Devi turned into a ninja and used several jutsus to defeat Ruby and Sarah~
This was a great chapter in Devi's story. You and Ketzio have created such a vibrant cast of characters, and I'm always excited to see more of the world you two have built.
Hehe sorry I keep saying every time you posted one "Oh im gonna read it" but never got around to it. I like little slice of life stories like this.
kody needs help, and devi/aria should be the pair to give it to her. she needs to figure out what she wants now before her pedo boytoy tries something stupid at her dads request... it'd be sad to see her get hurt, i was tearing up reading how devi got hurt even this amount.
You wrote it well, though the scenes need a little help they seem kinda disjointed. give us a bit of perspective, a little more description, and i for one would absolutely adore seeing the lion getting the shit kicked out of her.
the picture is very cute, i love the details and i could so see kody having a mirror in her locker, she seems the type... she is very pretty with her hair up.
Ketzio
7 years, 8 months ago
Well, the pedo thing was more of a random insult Aria made up without anything backing it up but we are glad that you are invested enough to care about that! ^w^
Thank you very much for your constructive criticism! If you believe the story was a bit disjointed, we'll do our best to adjust our style in the future :)
Also thank you for the compliment on the picture as well ^^
FauxPaws
your characters are very believable, because you include the bad and the good.
Well i love the interplay you include in your dialogue. but when i say disjointed, it's only how it moves from scene to scene. how devi walks to kody in search of something, she doesn't know what. thats a perfect scene because we can imagine her walking there, crying. lost. going to the one thing she needs.
but the scene where aria bluntly goes hunting for the lioness and her follower, we see her rationalizing where the lioness is supposed to be, but no description of what she does to get there. or where shes at.
and not to push the issue but the gum scene was so adorbs, it made me grin from ear to ear. i've been that lost before.... it made me remember that time.
<3 i look forward to my time in trouville, even what little i get..
oh most definitely.  I think what's causing Aria to grow on me, is she generally does care about Devi, and I find it kinda cute that she likes Piper, or seems to :3
Okay, you got me to like Aria a tiny bit. XD Still think she's a homophobic bitch, but at least she looks out for (some of) her friends. Really interested to see how this little trio develops.
One thing I gotta say: my God, that gum part! >.< I know it's only text and I'm overreacting, but I just can't stand that. Had to stop reading for a moment once I reached it.
Also, the more I learn about Trouville, the more I come to hate it for some reason. Probably just me. But anyways, great image and story, you two! Always a pleasure to read. ^^
Ketzio
Aria is more grossed out by lesbianism than she is offended by it >w< Though, she doesn't mind guys who are gay because peniseeeeees. Plus, her best friend is a lesbian so obviously she can say the stuff she says! :D
We're glad you read the story! We really appreciate the feedback and whatnot! Sorry about the gum part though BUT IT WAS VITALLY NECESSARY C: Also, yes, Trouville is quite a spectacle =w=
I saw the recent picture of the pair spooning and that got me interested. It was adorable. Since then I've been reading through and I just marathoned the last couple chapters just now. This story is great. I really love how Devi is bringing Kody and Aria together. They hate each other, but they both like Devi and they're willing to work together for her sake. I loved that.
