#15: Sneasel
"This vicious Pokemon has a smart and sneaky nature, it's paws conceal sharp claws, which it extends in order to make it's opponents flinch before attacking. It will also use these claws to scale trees in order to find Pidgey nests and feast on their unguarded eggs"
Sneasel to me is just one of the quintessential Dark-types. While a good hand full came out in Gold and Silver then they typing debuted, for some reason my mind always goes to it when I think of the original Dark-types, and that may very well be because it's based off the black cat which is basically the most iconic thing that comes to mind for dark trickery. That's not to say I value it higher then the other original set of Dark-types that debuted back in Gen 2, honestly I think all of them were solid and I loved them, my only exclusion is Tyranitar who, while I honestly like, I never thought it felt like a Dark-type, even to this day. Though if I'm being honest I've never felt Sneasel exemplified Ice-type either, so what do I know? But yes, Umbreon, Murkrow, Sneasel, Houndour, Houndoom, I loved them all and with that in mind though I would like to take this time to give honorable mention to Umbreon and Houndoom who I really wanted to include in this countdown, especially Houndoom. Umbreon got left out for being a bit too overused and looks cutesy no matter what and I wanted to focus on creepier elements and Houndoom becaue quite simply I can't draw dogs!
So, the vote went to Sneasel (and Murkrow who already placed earlier in the countdown) I'm sure you're all wondering what I think of Weavile then, given my generally negative view of later generations' designs. Well... I don't really know HOW I feel on Weavile. There's elements to it's design I dislike as much as I do like, but the same can be said for Sneasel. Both have pro and cons, so I guess I like them both a bit equally, but if I'm thinking objectively I probably like Sneasel just a bit more, though I don't object to making my Sneasel evolve. I think if some of the things I liked from Weavile were put on Sneasel, it would create the overall design I'd like best... so that's exactly what I did. I want to play up more of the asymmetrical design of Sneasel, which I always feel was just never fully fleshed out and just looked awkward with the single large ear, so I gave one side a more sleek look while the other is more scruffy and overblown. I like the result, I have to say.
