#16: Malamar

"It wields the most compelling hypnotic powers of any Pokémon, and it forces others to do whatever it wants, it then wraps its tentacles around it before finishing it off with digestive fluids."

Malamar is one of those Pokemon that I didn't know how to take to when I first saw it but I warmed up to it pretty quickly... even if I do have a small issue with it's design. Honestly as a whole it looks good, I know they've made squid/octopus type Pokemon before and I usually frown on them making Pokemon based on animals already touched on, but if it looks nice, it looks nice. I can't really argue at that point and honestly, I like squids... sue me! I love it's look though, that it gives off the vibe of one of those evil masterminds, looking like it has the big popped collar and whatnot which I really played up here. So what is it I dislike about Malamar?

That hideous beak! (Well THAT and it's typing makes it get raped by Bug, but that's besides the point) Yeah yeah I know squids actually HAVE beaks, but the placing of it just makes it looks like some fucked up bird. If it weren't for that beak it would probably push it up a good bit in the ranks of my favorite Pokemon, so I did away with it... and I was right. It looks so much better... well to me anyway. I dunno, sans the beak Malamar supports a very cohesive, solid look that just isn't seen that often with Pokemon these days. It's another case of beauty in simplicity which has been long forgotten in Pokemon designs. It seems like they're far too dedicated to shoving as many bells and whistles onto them these days that it totally muddles the overall design and makes them hard to fully grasp and enjoy, but again this is just me and why I've fallen out of love with the newer Pokemon designs. Malamar is another one of the cases from X/Y that really felt like an old, complete Pokemon design and probably why I gravitated to it like I did... just wish that beak was gone.
