Well, I Did It.

by
...I went and declared Souther in this week's TorFur Birfday Otter Update and I wanted you all to see it. Here's the citation...

" On the Holidays and Observances Desk, today, (Sunday, July 17th) is International Gay
Surfers Day, not to mention Souther.
And what is Souther, you ask? Well if the first Sunday after the first full moon in
Spring is Easter, then the first Sunday after the first full moon in Summer must be
Souther. Today, the Souther Squirrel dances on the heads of good boys and girls as
they sleep and brings them happy dreams of... um... if any of you had peculiar dreams
last night, please let me know and maybe we can figure it out. Incidentally, in
Australia Souther is represented by a Sugar Glider. With thanks to

...so I guess there's no turning back now. I've thrown out a proposal for an uniquely Furry holiday to the Furry public. And an uniquely Furry Spirit, too. It'll either be embraced or it won't. So then, CyberCornEntropic, here goes nothing!

Hm, I catch a hint of DMFalk in there.  :p  Not that I'm going to complain, of course, as I think this would be his sort of holiday. :p

Anyway, 'tis the day the Souther Squirrel and the Souther Sugar Glider give out chocolate rocks (perhaps leftover chocolate bunnies half-melted into a lumpy form by summer heat) and sling candied nuts at the heads of passersby.  Ah, fun times.

Here's my Souther picture from last year until I can get something mushed together for this year. -->

Thanks for thinking my screwball idea was worth a try.  At least you're promoting it better than I have been, so it will have a better chance at catching on than if it was just up to me. :p

I don't think there are many other Toronto furries who know DM. Squirrels dancing on your dreams was just the first thing that came to mind... GAAAH!! He's gotten to me!  -_^

...I'll make a note of the chocolate rocks for next year. Thanks. (You know, I once saw chocolate coal-lumps among the Christmas treats at a store.)

DM and his squirrels are insidious, aren't they? ;p

There are still a few from the old Trap Line days, like Taral and Kratsminsch, but I really haven't kept much contact with either since leaving FA, and there was Steve Baldaserra (sp?), though I haven't heard from him since the '90s- He got me hooked on the Air Farce, before they transitioned from radio to TV. ;)

I think you're the on;y T.O. furry I still have regular contact with, and that's after nearly 20 years. :)

I started to do an update on the old Trapliners, but decided it should be in a Pm instead.

BTW, would the Norther Ferret/Quoll give out chocolate coal lumps left over from Santa's bad boys and girls? And the Wester Hedgehog/Echidna, gummy worms? (Both eat worms sometimes.)

My entry for Norther 2010 included a poem with the picture that contains this stanza:
" Anon, the Norther Ferret gathered treats
To tide children over 'til summer heats.
She sought gumdrops of red and green,
Vanilla wafers for the discerning and keen.
Leftover munchies of festivities dead,
She picked through with much dread,
Choosing only the unspoiled and best,
Throwing into compost all the rest.
Then, scampering across the frozen wastes,
She carried things of good and fine tastes,
To good folk of ages young and old,
Any and all who bore the chill and cold.

So, basically, Norther could also be considered a day to get rid of any still good leftover candies on the shelves, including any chocolate coal. :p

As for the Wester Hedgehog and Echidna, You're right on the money. :p

Thank you.  I hope to upload them to InkBunny when the next Wester and Norther roll around.  Unfortunately, at the moment, I'm late getting this year's Souther submission up. :o

By the way, for those tuning in late, here's my not-quite-so-late-but-still-late picture for this year's Souther, just for the record:
