Inkbunny

Site ownership change

Hi everyone,

I feel this news journal needs more of a personal touch than usual, so allow me to introduce myself. I am starling, founder and creator of Inkbunny.

Without further ado, I would like to announce that I have officially handed ownership of Inkbunny to one of our longest-serving staff members, GreenReaper. He is now the site owner and head administrator.

Don't panic! It's still business as usual in Inkbunny land. There are no sweeping changes planned for the immediate future. In fact, I almost considered not announcing this publicly at all. Who owns the site is largely irrelevant to the average user.

But I realise that it is a pretty important thing to many people, and it does have a bearing on the ultimate future of the site. So these things deserve explanation. The rest of this journal is for those of you who'd like to know the full story, and what the future may hold.

Inkbunny was an idea born out of hope and frustration. I wanted to create a place that was safe and positive and inclusive, in an online world increasingly dominated by conservatism and hostility.

After everything we've been through and experienced over the years, that beginning now seems to me like the distant past. In reality, it was less than five years ago that the first lines of code were laid down, forming the foundations of what is now a thriving furry art site.

It was a point in my life when stable but part-time employment hours gave me plenty of time to complete the code base for the first launch. I grossly underestimated the amount of work the Inkbunny code base would take. I expected a three month build to get the basic functions together, but it was nearly a year of solid work before we had what I was prepared to call a launch version.

Since the site opened, I had always been able to focus a decent portion of my time on the never-ending coding tasks and demands of being the head administrator. I have felt immensely privileged to have the opportunity to be a part of something like Inkbunny, and it satisfied me greatly to be able to dedicate myself to it in that way for so long.

But the time has now come in my life to focus on my career and building up my finances for the future. An opportunity has come along that I feel I must seize with both hands. For it to succeed, I know I have to pour everything I have into it, and I cannot divide my attention.

To attempt to lead Inkbunny's development and administration, and to pursue this new project at the same time would be to the detriment of both. Inkbunny needs someone at the helm that can give it the dedication and focus it needs, and this is why I knew the site needed a new owner.

GreenReaper has been with Inkbunny as a moderator since the very beginning, graciously agreeing to give us his time and experience to help with what was originally an unknown little art site with hardly any members.

He never asked for the position. I approached him out of the blue, back when I was getting together a core of staff to help with the launch. We had met and chatted in the past, and I knew he had a wealth of experience with running furry community projects. But I had no idea if he would have even the slightest interest in giving his time to yet another random startup furry art site.

GreenReaper surprised me by agreeing to help, and since then he has consistently dedicated himself to Inkbunny. Over the years his ideals and goals for the site have echoed my own at every step, and I now see him as a close friend and someone I genuinely look up to.

Our disagreements have been just as important to me. He has always been willing to let me know when he thought I was doing something that wasn't wise. More times than I can count now, his maturity and level-headedness have stopped me acting on impulse or out of anger in tense situations. He has been a voice of calm, reason and logic. This is a crucial state of mind to have when weathering the kinds of storms you endure as a site owner.

GreenReaper's experience comes from years spent as a prominent and active figure in the fandom, heading such organisations as WikiFur and the news site Flayrah. He has assisted with many other furry sites and organisations, including volunteering as staff at furry cons.

He also possesses the skills in professional systems administration and software engineering that are essential to keeping the site running and improving into the future.

Will there be changes in Inkbunny's future as a result of this change in ownership? I hope so! I am excited about the plans that GreenReaper has shared with me. His ideas for the site and what it could grow to be are much grander than anything I had considered. And I believe he has the right skills and connections to achieve those goals.

But you can rest assured that the heart of what Inkbunny has become is in safe hands. He understands, just as I do, that the site and its community are something bigger and more important than any individual.

I believe that under GreenReaper's direction, the site will experience even more rapid growth and development than I managed with the limited time and energy I could put into Inkbunny in the past.

I will continue to assist with the moderation and coding of the site when I can, and I will remain a staff member for the foreseeable future. I'm sure I will miss being at the helm of the ship, but I feel the time is perfect for me to take on a background role as the site moves into the next exciting chapter of its development.

I cannot thank our little family of admins, moderators and advisors enough. That largely unseen core of people are responsible for Inkbunny being the success that it is. They work away tirelessly and selflessly in the background to ensure Inkbunny is a great place to be. Working with you all has been a pleasure, and I hope to continue being part of that group for a long time to come.

Finally, and probably most importantly, I want to thank the Inkbunny community. It's all of you who have made this place somewhere I happily call home. Warm, welcoming and inviting. Vibrant and exciting. A place I want come back to every day and that I am proud to say I am a part of.

WOW........
Well, congrats on the new gig! While it's exciting for you, it's also a little sad to see the old guard pass.
I've been here a while now. While my primary project 'Tina's story' began on SoFurry, Tina has always had her biggest fan base here. With a Hubrid Poodle and a human as protagonists, it was tricky bring Tina to the fans here. Still, you and your mods and admins were helpful and gracious in working with me. Tina has, as a result, grown and thrived here.
While we haven't always agreed, you and your staff have always been helpful, cooperative and friendly. Tina truly has a home here on Inkbunny.
Thanks for giving us misfit toys a place to play and hang out. Good luck in your new endeavors!
(HUGS)

And to you, @starling , I bow to you in giving us cubfur fans a safe haven with Softpaw and IB, and wish you well on your further journeys, an an equal bow in trying to keep IB from not being FA!

Announcing this was a good idea, Starling. There's a few things I'd like to say about IB. I haven't been keen on the rep for fucked up content this place gets, it bothers me from time to time, but this announcement has made me rethink my perspective. I've always respected and enjoyed using IB as a site, it's the best-functioning art site I've ever used, intuitively genius, but to have a site of this quality that also creates a place for usually restricted content? That's bloody rare and a great achievement. Whatever ones individual judgements on content are, with a really good filtering system this place is a joy to use and benefits so many people. Thank you for making IB what it is, you and all the staff. The best of luck with your future projects and your life in general, mate. You've given a lot of people a home online and a place of business and I've never seen you ask for a fucking thing in return. Respect.

I don't think I ever thanked you before for the site.  When I was invited to InkBunny back in beta, I didn't think Furry needed a new site, but one day, a fur I knew told me how he contacted you and asked for a music section on the main page and within a few hours, there it was.  I realized then, that there are many furs who host some website or another, but there are few who care about real users' experiences.  Because of your devotion, this website thrives where others merely exist.  For that I thank you.

So, the only real news is that @starling will be a bit less active. ;P

Really, I've had to be reminded which of the two were site owner all the time. Okay, maybe I exaggerate, but still. You can't say
GreenReaper
GreenReaper
wasn't always just as much a part of the site since it went up. That's this user's passive observation.

I've tried not to be selective in my view of the different fur sites I go to, other than in uploading according to policy, but it's impossible to deny IB is where the fun is.
Inkbunny is where I've discovered my favorite furs, even if their presence was bigger elsewhere, and where I've made all my friends in the community.
Nothing can change how important that is.

Ugh, this site lives on unfortunately...

I would kindly like criticize the site itself, Inkbunny needs a major overhaul big time for a variety of reasons:
1. The tagging system is highly inefficient, I iterate this because when you block a specific tag, owners can easily evade that tag block with another tag meaning the same thing.
2. Inkbunny attracts Crazy bastards like the Infamous Donro/monglor/Ornod who ultimately destabilize the site against itself, I suggest have a forum board to help against this kind of thing as to create a more stable community or at least a reputation rating system.
3. IB needs a better rep because this place is considered a joke by many other furs, they literally laugh when someone mentions the name Inkbunny. I cannot even iterate some of the stuff that I hear about this place half the time, here is an example https://www.sofurry.com/view/581113 some users even tagged it rape... That's pretty horrible...
4.Major interface overhaul, I am not even gonna lie, this place is clunky to navigate, it needs to be more stream lined in its GUI.
5.
" Locutus wrote:

I am not even going to iterate this again, IB attracts the Mentally deranged of the Furry community and the people who aren't welcome on other furry sites are not welcome for very specific reasons. I feel that the Adminship of IB should really communicate with other furry sites to root out 'problem child' users (Ex: Donro) and keep track of who is banned from other Fur sites.
6. Better categorization system, Nuff' said, especially when it comes to different types of artwork.
7. an IB hosted Chat, it allows for other furs of this site stay in touch and updated with others.

I am glad GreenReaper is the owner now because I hope we could see some changes for the better.

InkBunny already has an established identity, and the freedom to post artwork that other sites prohibit is part of that identity. If you're not happy with this, why not move to another site with those restrictions, instead of demanding that InkBunny be something that it's not? There are other art galleries out there if you're not comfortable with this one... Weasyl, for instance. It's not your place to tell the admins to appeal to your tastes, at the cost of everyone else's.

You realize the IB's lack of any form of communication amongst users has effectively created paranoia, allowing those who can manipulate such hysteria to pit users against each other. They is more drama here than there is SF, especially since the shit that hits here is more grandscale than the petty squabbles over in my resident furry site. The worst part is that little issues get so blown out of proportion here, like someone arguing that they used the same pose as another artist, Big Fracking Deal! Even to make things worse is that the people that do have money on the site use it to dominate artists who albeit rely on Art for a secondary income, Artwork here gets the point where its just whatever the said commissioner wants.

Not to mention SF's kicking IB's ass on the liberality of its works, you can find cub there as well. Seriously, not to mention the fact that IB's Tagging system is antiquated compared to SF's where if you actually block something, it stays blocked! Not even to point where someone can simply circumvent it using Synonyms

I missed this somehow.

I wish you luck Starling and I hope IB continues to be the welcoming and friendly place I've come to love.
I wonder if the no human yiff rule will be reconsidered now?
GreenReaper
10 years, 3 months ago
I believe the our policy is still appropriate for various reasons:
* Legal: issues of checking characters' ages, portraying RL people, depictions of bestiality, etc.
* Resources: taking up disk space and bandwidth for non-furry material, requires upgrades
* Focus: staff and most users are here for furry, adding humans dilutes their interest and passion

Basically, we're here to support the furry arts. There are sites which provide for human erotica already, and we'd rather let them take the significant legal and technical burdens of doing so.
Thecolliefan
10 years, 3 months ago
I can understand that, but the no human sex rule cripples IB.
Its this single rule that has kept IB second to FA for years, most people I know only use IB as a second site largely down to this rule.

I'll give you an example, in my story a woman in her late 20's, early 30's beds her collie after realizing he's what she's been missing.
Now since he's an anthro and their both are consenting adults it means it isn't bestiality.
Surely you could amend this no human sex rule to only ban only human children in adult situations.
GreenReaper
10 years, 3 months ago
Inkbunny is not aiming to be a better FA than FA. It is perhaps closer to say that we are aiming to be the best furry art gallery, though this does not encompass all that we do. We would rather have a better site, that our users enjoy more, than a bigger site.

Of course, often these two goals are compatible! But art and stories involving humans are a distraction. They're tolerable in small amounts when the cost and risk to the site (inc. users and staff) are not too high. But we did not set out to make a website exploring the sexual proclivities of humans, and because groups of humans have criminalized forms of fantasy involving them, it is both safer and a lot less work for us to exclude them. In particular, we have no desire to spend time determining whether a human character is 16 or 18.

Non-humans are not natural legal persons. That is why you can eat them, study on them, etc. Any sexual interaction between a legal person and an animal counts as bestiality. (It cuts both ways, though. If it were not for this principle, cub artwork might be illegal.)

I would enjoy IB more if I could post all my work and I know others feel the same way.

I do feel this pointless rule is holding the site back, as at one point Sofurry didn't allow human, but once the rule was changed the site grew and attracted new artists and writers.
And where I can understand trying to prove or disprove a human's age you could just set it so all human's in adult situations have to be 25 or older, that way they can't possibly look underage and there's no doubt.

The question isn't whether we're being held back, but whether we want to go there.

There's no doubt that permitting humans would attract some users, and be appealing to others. I talk to people on a regular basis who say the same thing as you. However, many of these people primarily create or commission work involving humans. Allowing the work they enjoy would result in a site where humans are more prevalent, attracting visitors who are only fans of such work.

Inkbunny was set up to serve and celebrate art created by furry fandom, not human fandom. People donate and staff serve because we offer something special to that community. The risk is many key stakeholders would feel the resulting site is worse, because it is no longer focussed to their interests, is slower due to traffic, costs more to run, has human porn to moderate, etc.

You can see examples of this in the comments to this journal (in which humans were first allowed at all). Concerns over what art is seen may be mitigated by the fact that users can block certain keywords; but this does not help entirely (as is clear for cub art), and does nothing for many of the other issues mentioned above.

We regularly review the site's permitted content, but changes are likely to be gradual and limited. Our first priority is to our original mission, and we will not expand beyond that until it's clear that the benefits outweigh the costs.

Well that didn't happen on sofurry, pure furry art and stories still dominates the site.

Why don't you hold a pole asking everyone on IB if they want this site to expand an allow human porn.
And I don't mean just human like FA allows, but human as long as there's a furry presence in it, an animal or anthro like SF does.
When you think about it, IB is just as well known as FA, has a better lay out and better staff, so why does IB only have a third of the users FA has when this is clearly a better site?
I'll tell you now its the human rule that restricts IB and forces people to use FA when they would rather use this site.
Before the cub ban on FA this site was largely unknown, but because IB allows cub and FA doesn't has made cub artist flock here.
If you allowed human the same thing would happen again.
Also if the people here feel so strongly about human porn/human on anthro then why do you add an option in the menu that filters human out.
But going by the fact more and more people are posting cropped pictures of human art with links to FA, SF and dropbox should be telling you people want this.

I have no issue with the no explicit human content rule. This is InkBUNNY, and the focus should remain on furry characters. If you want nude humans, you'll just have to go somewhere else.

Frankly allowing humans on the site is a legal headache that is just unnecessary.

And yet people keep demanding it anyway. It's almost as if they know what problems it would create and want to push for it in the hopes of destroying the site.

Oh, I don't think we need to resort to conspiracy theories. :-)

Human/animal sexual interaction is a popular topic of artwork, and we'd probably allow it if humans hadn't made so many laws on the topic. That's it in a nutshell.

I hope you'll stand firm on this policy. I get tired of people requesting something IB was not designed to offer over, and over, and over again. You'd think by now they'd realize they're not going to get what they want and just give up.

Thank you, Starling for a transparent and forthright explanation of a change that could have been hidden and glossed over.

I wish best of luck to both you and GreenReaper with your projects going forward :-)

Starling, I've been on IB since the beginning, and boy... what a wonderful job you've done over the past 4 years. May IB live long and prosper :)
