It's not just porn

I'm a horny pervert and I draw a lot of porn.

That's not all I do, though. I make art. It wasn't until recent years where fandom-wide pressure started pigeon-holing artists into becoming content-creators, and specializing in only one thing over and over.

An attitude I am growing ever more tired of as I age and more people under 25 enter the fandom is the "this is just a porn site" approach.

Nah. Furaffinity and Inkbunny and the various other sites I can't recall anymore- these were not JUST porn sites. They were furry social hubs. Why do you think the journal, page shout, and PM systems exist? It's not just for business.

People used to engage with each other, as human beings, on these sites. En masse. For better or worse.

SFW art used to occupy a lot more space than it does now. It was still very much a minority, yes, but it was more present.

Artists were seen as people, not content feeds.

One of the root causes of this (aside from social media ruining everything), I feel, is the segregating of sex from furry culture. Furry is beginning to treat sexuality and sexual expression exactly how normies treated it- something to be private and secretive about.

Fuck that. What are you all, Burned Furs? Furry has always had an attitude of sexuality being a beautiful part of life, and there was no need to treat it like it was some goblin to hide in the closet. Why separate it from the rest of yourself? No reason other than internalized shame from a religious social contract from the normative society furry was founded to get a break from.

Furry has gone from a sub culture, to a mainstream fad. I hate that- and I urge anybody in their early 20's to really ponder this. Are you furry because you are an outcast seeking refuge from the strict bullshit of social norms? Or are you here because it seems cool at the moment.

Do you have a real emotional connection to this identity?

Anyway. Stop claiming this is just a porn site. Stop acting like artists cannot express themselves and who they are, apart from porn. Start empathizing, start thinking critically, free yourself.

Commit the sin of Empathy, for the sinners are those cast down from the so called heaven where hatred reigns supreme. If I am to walk the earth as a fool who cares about people around me, who feels what they are suffering, what they are enjoying, what they are angry about, then I am walking the earth with companions.

As I've said before... *looks* ... fuck, I said this 14 years ago... "The fandom is no longer a place for outcasts. We used to be a bunch of rejects, the middle school kids who would meet up after being bullied and talk about our fascinations and obsessions. Now we've moved onto the high school and everyone has their little cliques and groups. We're no longer rejects finding each other, but clubs made up of goths, jocks, popular kids, and of course, bullies. The problem is... There's still a group of rejects trying to find their place... And they're not allowed to join these cliques... And they cannot find each other over the shouting in the hall of different cliques speaking over them. The fandom will continue to decay as it enters adulthood... Mainstream appeal."
Here we are. Mainstream appeal...

On the internet, it's easy to turn your empathy off and treat another person as just a wall of text you can point at, laugh, mock, bully, or harass. You have no threat of being hit by them, or consequence of an authority telling you to stop outside of moderators that you'll no doubt bully and berate until they stop functioning themselves.

... Artists are people, not services. They're not your hooker to get you off for a price. They're not your therapist to help your cacophony of problems you cope with by lashing at out them either. They're also not your idols you should 'look up to and blindly defend'... Just regular people. Like you. Like me.

Thanks, I needed to hear something like this today. Greed has infected this evil generation and has destroyed communities. I wish we could cling together in a web of fluffy support, but that unfortunately doesn't make any money. The internet has been terribly commodified, and we are all feeling the terrible squeeze of the economy that most Americans worship like god.

I should do more things on this website that isn't related to selling pornography. I should contribute to the ecosystem of sfw goodness.

The story I am writing is SFW as far as I am into it atm, because I am writing for plot, not porn. I am sure its taking a hit because of it, but eh, too bad xD I know that isn't what you were talking about initially, but I definitely get what you mean. I have met some of my best friends in the world on this site, and have now met several of them IRL. Furry is more than porn, even if you aren't a suiter. I don't have a suit, and idk if I honestly ever would, but I absolutely consider myself a furry.

20 years ago when I was stupid and naive, I dreamed that by 2020 we'd be living in a society where "porn" was accepted like any other content and no longer demonized over outdated fears, at least when it comes to artwork. Admittedly I went too far imagining a futuristic society with sexy cartoons on TV and silly hentai on billboards in town square: This is humanity we're talking about, same self-hating and offended brains as back when they lived in caves, I learned the hard way technology will never fix certain evolutionary limitations.

What I never imagined is we'd still be fighting for our right to create and share even art freely. Primarily over cursed religious beliefs and Victorian superstitions about threats to children, feeding the idea that society must mind-control kids to not even look at certain things, getting so out of hand the internet is being censored for users of all ages. Those crazy ideas not only survived to this day, but are pushed even more aggressively now and copied from the conservative right to the "liberal" left. Which is a huge reason why I'm hugely disappointed with the world as a whole beyond any and all "sides"... not the only one, but definitely up there on the list. Only the last cowards will try to steal somebody's thoughts by force... heck even the Satanist doctrine has a concept of respecting free will, much more than supposed Christians and atheists alike.

Furaffinity has been a huge abuser of creators for ages, they've long betrayed themselves and the fandom they claimed to stand for. Most alternatives with mainstream social media platforms are just as bad; On Youtube you can't post even safe animations especially of anthro / dragon characters unless you're a commercial animation studio, they age-restrict or delete videos and channels based on art styles or other unknown criteria... that's how badly they hate us and anyone that is different from their cult of a society. Inkbunny is among the only sane ones left, followed by e621 to some extent... I hope every day they can resist the pressure coming from these evil madmen to become like the rest.

There is far too much normie commercialized nonsense happening with the furry art sites, but in community groups I have found more... community! While the stage was nice to have for a while it became run down and tattered. Sometimes you just got to move the performance to captivate an audience. Happed with me in the Atlyss crowd.

True, but we shouldn't just let them have our legacy.

One small quibble: porn is art!

That aside, I agree with you. Perhaps ironically this attitude is even ruining the safe for work side of things; many artists treat the "general" tag as something to sneak their kinky material into for broader appeal. I'm in my late 20s now, and O think I am guilty of seeing artists somewhat as content feeds, but I assure you it's not a fad for me. I've been here (in the furry fandom that is, not Inkbunny specifically) since I was a tween who discovered the now extinct World of Feila roleplaying forum.

I agree with that. I actually did not intend to imply otherwise, I just had a very particular goal in mind.

Reminds me of how i post most of my non-sexual musings on baraag. It feels alot cozier. Also, if this was just a porn site, non-sexual content would not be allowed.

I want to do something, get up on a podium or evolve psychic powers in order to shout at everyone until they listen to stop forcing "shame" onto the world because it's unhealthy for everyone. I just *sigh* I'm just so sick of everything now, I just want to write and entertain or even excite people, but I shant devolve into complaining about my own problems here.

Artists are based. The killing of their personality is just accelerating corporate ai shit. Designating these passions and curiosities into mere fetishes removes the humanity in our fellow creators. Keep people alive. Love each other. And give yourselves room to breathe.

Honestly, this post makes me want to engage and create more. I feel like I owe it to the fandom to further help keep it going.

it pisses me off so badly the furry community is turning into anti sex anti kink anti exploration and it can be blamed on FA decided to host a witch hunt and segregate a massive chunk of community making folks who used to be kind and open with each other turn hostile and hateful

Furry going mainstream was always going to be a shitshow. Keep being pervy. I originally drifted into the furry community as a way to find like minded fluffs to hook up with. I stayed because it became a family.

To be fair, a LOT of artists have shot themselves in the foot doing stupid commercialized crap like:

- Refusing to post their SFW art on FA/IB, while they do post it on DeviantArt, Newgrounds, etc.
- Posting "exclusives" on a number of different sites, trying to get watchers everywhere to boost their social media points.
- Saying their Patreon won't be a paywall, and then promptly turning it into a paywall.
- Wiping their galleries and moving exclusively to social media because they "aren't getting enough views."
- Posting only preview images and forcing me to go to Twitter/BlueSky to view the "real" version.
- Posting a zillion YCH reminders over and over, rendering the "browse" and "search" features pretty useless.
- Posting ads in the art description, instead of a detailed description of the art.
- Not interacting with their fans at any level.
- Flooding me with 100 journal notices every day "reminding" me that they are willing to accept my money.

Yeah, it's not just the viewers.  Many artists only look at the fandom as a meal ticket, and they've pretty much done this kind of damage to themselves.

I just do art for fun, post whatever I want, produce a mix of SFW and NSFW stuff, don't take anything seriously, and leave as many comments as I can.  If things aren't fun, then what's the point?

You are absolutely correct, and it got worse the younger the artists get.

I feel like I did monetization correctly- and it's still working out for me, even though I cannot live self sufficiently.

I opened a Patreon (moved to Subscribestar when Patreon demanded to see private documents for age proof because, NO).

Used it for early access to my finished work, and peeps at WiP stuff. My early access period was like 2 days, tops, before I posted it for free everywhere. The real bonus for the clientele was seeing the process, and often getting a say in what I did (when people still engaged in that way, intelligently, anyhow).

I did occasional exclusives- What set those apart was that my audience on Patreon/Substar would get to vote on who the subject of the image was and the access period would be longer. Eventually, they would get posted for free as well.

All of my silly comics and doodles and smaller side projects just released for free outright.

I only included advertisement links in my descriptions when it felt appropriate. So if it was a gift for somebody or a picture with a serious message, no links.

Those links would also be under an actual artist commentary. Save for the period of time where I was too depressed to say anything.

I love interacting with my audience and other artists- and I keep that up as best I can.

Sadly I am in a severe minority in how I handle it. Most people are insular grinders who really are just capitalists. It hurts my soul. It discourages new artists because they have a warped sense of what they should be chasing.

I defend the right to monetize one's work. Especially being disabled irl, I can't do much else. That said I also defend critical thinking and not being a corpo douchenozzle.

Artists should always be encouraged to stretch their wings and explore different avenues of expression.

Remember: when you pigeonhole furry artists, Krystal can't enjoy her sandwich.

I am a very sexual person so it's a huge part of my life, and while I do understand there's not always a place and time for it, denying or villainizing it literally would shut down a huge part of me as an individual. I never understand the hate that sex/porn art gets, people act like it's disgusting but I mean sex is a huge part of life - Not just for us but all living things.
And I do agree as well that they shouldn't be just treated as "porn sites" and artists as just businesses or art farms. Whenever I commission an artist I always like to be a little chatty with them while I'm texting them, let them know that I'm not just expecting them to make me art and that they are human, not robots that just crank out art.

I really wish some of these younger furs could have felt the vibes of the community days. Even the drama.

Heheh oh yes , very much a huge one! 😈
Agreed! I remember stuff like Yiffstar where people would actually go on forums and chat with each other about stuff, not just post art then move along.
Honestly even in my Discord or Telegram spaces, the people I "chat" with will rarely talk

As far as I can tell it's just general internet brainrot. It's not any better outside the furry fandom.
And of course you have the prudes but they go after everything and their presence in the furry fandom is comparably mild.
The big advantage of being infamous is that it scares off all the "moderates".

Oh for sure, general culture degrading has played its role in this.
