Furry fandom's second-busiest artist community now has a presence in the USA's Second City!
Host1Plus has provided a cloud server in Chicago for us to try over the next month. This regional cache targets the Midwest/Upland South USA (to Chattanooga, Oklahoma and Denver), plus Western Canada.
It's a brand new server: two Intel Xeon E5-2620v4 cores, 2GB DDR4 ECC RAM and 60GB of SSD-cached storage - already 40% full - with traffic currently peaking at 20Mbit. If all goes well, we expect a long-term presence in the region which hosts our community's second-largest convention, Midwest FurFest.
Update: Thanks to our participation in testing the cloud platform, we've secured a upgrade to 8GB RAM and 120GB + 240GB of storage, with free hosting for the next six months.

Let's just say the massive success of last year's Inkbunny dinner at MFF showed us we have a future in Chicago - I think I saw over a hundred fans at Hofbrauhaus! It's a nice central location, too, taking some of the load off our Arizona and Virginia caches… which increased after February's upgrades.

I know, right? RAM is usually the pinch-point for cloud services - it's easy enough to add more disks to a SAN, and CPU cores can be shared, but it's a lot harder to do that with RAM. Fortunately, 2GB is enough to cache the filesystem and the most frequently-accessed files and thumbnails.
As for the rest… well, that's why I was chatting with Host1Plus's CTO earlier today. We'll be checking back with them a little later, once they've finished tuning the storage platform. Animal testing!

im not sure if its really about the SIZE of the city, but maybe more the LOCATION.... there are already IB servers on the east and west coasts, but none in the center of the country.... I'm sure this is what they are trying to change

Sadly, we can't accept RAM donations. Even if it's the right kind, we don't own the servers in question! Owning servers has never made much sense for us - the economics tend towards leasing bits of them.
