Our new server, thanks to the sponsors

Hi everyone

I'd like to say thank you to all our Sponsors (including the anonymous ones), as their generosity over the last few weeks has allowed us to upgrade the Inkbunny servers and pay for 3 months of hosting all at once. We received over $1000 in just the first week after we asked for the extra monies for the upgrade.

You all rock. I'm especially heartened by the fact we didn't have to beg the whole userbase for money. We just asked quietly (via my account and others reposting the journal) and the response was huge. It makes all the hard work worth it to see that kind of support. <3

We now have a new server "Fluttershy" running 8 x 2.33GHz Xeon cores, 16GB RAM and 15kRPM SAS drives (15kSAS is way faster than regular SATA).

The old specs were 4 x 2.13GHz Xeon cores, 4GB RAM and SATA2 drives. So this is a massive improvement.

We migrated today and things have gone smoothly so far. But please report any problems you notice.

With the extra speed and capacity, we now have heaps of room to grow! The site seems way more snappy too (or at least it maintains the same speed even at peak time or when backups are running). Plus it's nice to have a new toy to play with *geeks out*. :3

*hugs all*

Edit: Blame

for the server name. It was his suggestion. The fact I think that epic angry/crazy Fluttershy is the hottest thing since buttered toast is irrelevant.

Heh, impressive! =D I wish we could get even a fraction of that response for FurBuy. =) Grats on the new server and we'll hope to see IB around for years to come!

Hooray! I'm so glad everything worked out :) And it's nice to know that even the "little bit" that was donated helped push toward a greater goal. Now it's time for a partay 8D

Holy crap! That's really awesome. Kudos to everyone who's ever donated. ^_^ You should all go turn on your donation medals so people can thank you for helping out. =3 The site certainly feels snappier. =D

I love the way everything is so fast now. For now this is the only website I'm actually donating for. :3

Keep up the awesome work <3

Brilliant to see that taxpayers money is going towards non-taxable offshore hosting! :p

First off, congrats for reaching that goal so quickly, it's nice to see that IB, even despite it's comparably small userbase, achieves such a great thing in such a short time.

I am a little disappointed, though. The server change and website maintenance came totally out of a sudden, just when I wanted to continue writing a message. No announcement, neither on-site, e-mail, not even the otherwise quite up-to-date Twitter.
And contrary to sudden outages, hackers or similar reasons I'm sure the server change was already planned at least some days in advance, so, I would've really liked just a very small downtime announcement.

One thing that was said from so many people in so many comments on news entries was how great it is that Inkbunny is so open with communication with users, providing them with info, even if something comes all out of a sudden, so, yeah, this sudden disappearance was totally "not like you".

Don't get me wrong, I'm not utterly disappointed or seriously angry. The downtime was just some hours, everything seems to be working fine and it certainly was a nice occasion, but still this left a slightly sad feeling in me.

So, yeah, no use to cry over spilled milk so much I guess. I hope it'll be different the next time you switch servers or something else that's predictable, I won't stop supporting IB because of such a little thing, neither financial nor in general, but I felt like I have to voice my opinion on this, I hope you won't blame me for it.

No matter what, as I said in the beginning, congrats on the successful switch, everything seems fine so far.
Now it's time to get more and more users to make use of the additional power, eh?^^

Best wishes for the future, have a nice time.^^

Greetings,

I'm impressed a website like inkbunny worked on the old server.
Now  you just need a second loadballanced fluttershy for redundancy and maintenance and you'll be all set.

Honestly most servers are ridiculously overpowered now for what they are called on to do. That's why you see a lot of virtual servers springing up - because it's got to the point where you don't need a full one for most applications.

Serving data to people scales really well. It shouldn't require 10x CPU/RAM to serve 10x more people - if it does, you're doing it wrong!

Congratulations.
However, why choose 15kRPM SAS disks? SSD is better.
15kRPM consumes too much power, and extremly hot. SSD is not.
