Here are the cubs; Jed, Clarence, Rex and Donna, in August of 1960 having lots of fun with their trains and train board layout.

This is the 0.27 gauge train board layout Al and Marge fixed up for the cubs to enjoy.
The add-on room to accommodate it was built in February of 1957. And the train board was completed by early July of that same year.
The year 1957 was also the same year Al completed achieving his master's degree with majors being in advanced electronics and upper level aerospace engineering.

The advantage of a three rail track system is you can loop track to head a train back in the opposite direction on the same track without electrically shorting out the system...The outer two rails the wheels roll on are the same polarity. The locomotives have a pickup that rides the insulated center rail, which is the opposite polarity.

Next posting will be the floor plan of the house as it was in 1955...The way it was when Al and Marge purchased the house in 1951.

Lionel Trains?

That they are. They were among the best in that day and time.

There was also a Marx brand that were cheapo level trains...However, there weren't any Marx trains on that layout.

They are. They were not raised poor, that's for sure.

The family is 3rd generation upper middle class, which will seem to be a disappearing class 50 years into the future.

Wow, I've seen some amazing setups like this over the years. Can take a decade too create and skills that are part artist and part engineer.
I bet those kids have some jealous friends?

A little jealous to some degree. However, there are times Al and Marge invite the neighbor cubs to run the trains, thus there isn't much of a jealousy issue.

Now the cubs from families who are not well acquainted with the Coyote Family are jealous.

I bet the place is often crowded with kids. I get the impression Al is the "cool dad"?

I would've loved to have a layout like that.  Unfortunately we didn't have the room or the budget for it, plus we lived in an apartment at the time.

There were a couple of summers I had set up an large outdoor HO layout on a large sand pile area and ran an extension cord out to it. I just had to be careful to keep sand from building up on the tracks.

All aboard the Broken Time Machine Express.

Stops include Uncertaintyville,
Temporal Paradoxburg,
And Santa Fe... because it’s a hub.

And the tracks nostalgically stroll through the past.

Wow! Only thing it's missing is a turntable...
moyomongoose
3 years, 1 month ago
True there is no turntable.

Though they do have return loops, which are possible with a three rail system.

Yep, that would work, and probably faster than a turntable... ;)

Guessing you know this, but two-rail systems can have return loops too, however they have to be insulated and separately powered with controls to enable polarity reversal when returning to the main line...

I have heard of that. You would have to know when to flip the power.

Jack: when I was a cub I was just getting into the hobby and back then in the late nineties I could only dream of a large layout my dad was a cub back when Lionel just released the 1957 catalog I still have some of the trains in my collection which I run every day my layout is a 5x9
