They're constantly using sugar cube as a term of endearment, so the opposite is pretty much an insult. Thus Apple Bloom gets kicked out.

Once you start paying attention to it, she says Sugar Cube way too much.

She is a horse...if a horse could talk it would say sugar cube a lot.

Aww, poor Applebloom was just trying to be cute :(

Also, horses/ponies would enjoy a salt lick as much as they enjoy sugar cubes.

It still make no sense.

Applejack uses sugarcube as a form to name someone, it's assumed to be a compliment of sorts, or a friendly greeting.

Applebloom uses the opposite, since the opposite of sugar is thought to be salt and the opposite of cube would be a sphere.

Applebloom saying Saltsphere is like an insult.

Oh, don't I know this from RL. You say one innocent little thing to try and join a conversation, and the result is that they're chasing you out of town...

As much as animals like salt licks, you'd think this would be a case of too personal a term of endearment (Like she was calling her sister a lover or something)

I think that this Applebloom's family that is over the line. You ground child for saying insults. She will soil the reputation of the apple family everywhere she go.
