Character Sheet for Fiona
Nickname(s)
Fifi, Fi, Faye, Pulchella, Poochy
Sex/Gender
Female
Species
Sea Slug (hypselodoris pulchella)
Age
10
Personality
Eager to please and overexcited about making new friends, but extremely self-conscious and used to being rejected for being different.  She may insist falsities in an effort to seem more "normal," such as that her mantle is just a hat, or that her eye-stalks are ears.
Likes/Dislikes
Likes:
Sugar, breads, sponges (she eats them), round things, water, being clean, the color orange

Dislikes:
Salt, rubbing alcohol, pointy objects, being different, pranks, ice cream, citrus fruit, being stared at
Background/History
She discovered that she could breathe above water by accident, but not much else is known about her past or her family.  Her current residence is unknown.
World/Setting
Earth-like, semi-futuristic.
Body
Chitinous fibers grow just like mammalian hair from her head and can be managed similarly to it, but they're a little more rigid and the tips can poke at skin uncomfortably.  The eye-stalks on her head are entirely functional, giving her the ability to see all around herself, although they don't distract her from her forward vision unless she focuses intently on it.  She has thousands of tiny teeth which seem to simply form smooth white bars on the top and bottom of her mouth.  Her body is covered in soft, pale flesh with an inner yellow glow, and is lined laterally with deep blue or purple frills (their tone varies by day).  Her palms and the arches of her feet are similar to an ordinary slug's foot, and she may secrete mucus in them intentionally or, when she sweats, unintentionally.
Fiona's "tail" is actually a flower-like formation of gills that have adapted to breathing above water.  The exposed gills are sensitive and can get irritated easily, so she tends to breathe from her mouth through a scarf or other clothing if she finds the air to be unsuitable.  She can consciously close the "petals" of her tail into a more pointed shape.
The mucous membranes on her ventral side would allow her to slither around or stick to a surface on her belly...but she probably wouldn't do that.
Clothing
Wears loose clothing, often separated in the back to leave her mantle exposed, although she will (uncomfortably) conceal it if she has no choice.  When her mantle is showing, it isn't uncommon for the rest of her clothing to be suspended entirely by her shirt.
There are furries, there are scalies...what is this, a slimy?  In any case, I wouldn't have ever expected my first character sheet to be a slug, but I felt that she needed some explaining.  I'll attempt to add more details to the sheet if specifically requested.

This entire endeavor sprouted from my brother linking me this picture by David Doubilet (National Geographic).  Fiona's features were for the most part derived and modified from the secondhand information I encountered while looking for the particular species's name.  The truth is I am fairly certain that I did not find the exact species, but hypselodoris pulchella was close enough for me, and the inspiration remained.

The drawings aren't quite up-to-par with a normal reference sheet, but for now I think they're sufficient.

Did you know:
Sea slugs are the strongest animals compared to their body size? This little girl could proportionally  flip a car!

I thought that was only related to their suction power...but that is quite interesting.  If she really were that strong she'd be afraid to show it.  :)

Thanks.  I am proud of the anthropomorphism, but I get the impression it's not hard to pull some kind of inspiration from that photo... depending on interests. :)

Thank you, I'm glad you like her!  I haven't got any plans for her yet, unfortunately, but hopefully I'll figure something out relatively soon.  :)

Awwww, li'l slimy cutie~ I wouldn't reject her, I'd snuggle. Definitely a strange sort of critter, but I'm not much one to talk, bein' a monster species and all. It does bring to mind the fact that certain aquatic things probably would be seen as 'strange', which is a li'l sad.

First of all, omfg dat photo O_O . I'm glad it inspired Fiona. I really like all the technical compromises and challenges you describe her body having as she tries to fit in with the vertebrate crowd. That tail is fascinating, though she seems like the kind that would make sure no one's trying to take a picture of her backside ^^; . And the bits that are framing her torso, is that also part of her mantle?  Lovely character ^^

Indeed, her mantle runs all the way down...what's essentially her spine... and connects around that area down to the base.  All the swinging around to avoid getting a photo of herself might be hazardous though...  Thanks.  :)

This is a wonderfully creative character, I really like her. I don't think I've been this delighted with a species choice since I saw that sand dollar boy back on FA ages ago. :3

I'm glad you like her!  I hadn't seen that character, though; I'd be curious to see a sand dollar boy.  :)

Don't check your works very often, so I missed this one. One thing that makes me tilt my head a bit: I know land slugs really hate salt, but why does she not like it? She's a sea slug after all, so isn't her natural environment mainly salt?

I think the basis I'd made was that sea slugs have bodies as easily passable by salt as ordinary slugs; therefore she'd be accustomed to the concentration of salt in seawater, but touching salt in more dense concentrations would result in the same osmotic effect as it would to an ordinary slug, though at a less significant rate.  I could be entirely wrong about sea slugs' susceptibility to the same problem, though.
Thank you for asking.  :)
