In the past evey teacher/porfessor that has told me that has had to pass me because of the final. In otherwords if the final. Where missing i would likely have failed but because i usually did so freaking well on it i did pass and usually quite well.
Sometimes this confued them and a couple times it pissed them off. Oh well.

Yes, you could just blow off the homework if you wanted and still be fine. But what a trap it could be as well. I always found the homework to be the best study material anyway, I think that was the idea.

I had a particular teacher in college who, if I remember correctly, did do that. You might be taking his comment out of context a little, he knows he's supposed to learn from it. His comment is him realizing that his homework is only for studying, but counts nothing toward his grade. I know my characters' dialogue doesn't always get the right point across.
