Making Rain Under The Sun
by tannim
July 27, 2011

"I'm hot!  I wanna go in!  Can I go in, yet?" Tosh drank from the adult sized water cup.

"Unfortunately, not yet, Tosh.  The exterminator said not for another hour." Esme panted and slumped down against her outdoor patio table.  It really was way too hot to be outside for any length. "No more little pets you find outside.  Ok?"

"Ok..." All the little kid could think of, though, was how his skin felt like it was burning in the 103 degree high humidity heat.  "How much longer now?"

"Still an hour, dear..." Esme watched him dump his water on himself and wished she could do the same. Her eyes drifted around the yard and came at last to the hose.  With a groan from the sticky sweat squishing in her soaked fur and clothes, she got up and hurried over to it.  "Tosh, come here."

He grumbled a bit and only just heard the squeaking of the knob on his way over.  The boy yelled a moment later when a stream of hot rubber smelling water sprayed him.  It turned into a giggled moments later when the water turned from hot to cold and clean.

His mother smiled at his happy laughter as he danced in the spray.  Tosh's little hooves clacked on the cement then over quieted as he hurried onto the grass closer to her.  She aimed the hose a bit higher to make the spray more of a rain on him but as he came closer she had to point it straight up.  Not that she minded, it rained on them both instead.

"It's raining, mamma!" Tosh grabbed her wet pants a bit above the knee and tugged on them to get her attention.

Esme shivered at the cold water falling over them both.  She turned the nozzle to give a more mist-like spray and then stroked her son's little right horn.  The cold water felt wonderful after the extreme heat.  There was no reason to worry about her clothes getting wet, both she and Tosh had long since soaked their clothes with sweat anyway.

"It isn't really raining.  I'm making the water fall with the hose. See?" Esme turned the nozzle to OFF and the spray stopped. "Normally I don't want to waste water like this, but on a day like today, it's just fine."

Tosh shivered, then groaned. "No, bring the rain back! I want the rain!"

His mother crouched and aimed the hose at him.  A slight turn made it squirt him with very weak pressure.  She stopped it immediately while he rubbed at the spot with a pout on his muzzle.  Another quick light squirt had him giggling though  Another after that had him trying to grab the hose.

Esme dodged his clasping hands, then turned the spray back on full after aiming it up. "Would you like to make it rain, Tosh?"

"Uh huh!" He looked up into the falling as he let it cool him down again.

"Alright.  Here, hold on tight now." She handed him the hose but kept hold of it.  As she expected he dropped it almost immediately with the force of the water pushing it out of his hand. "No, you have to squeeze it tighter.  The water gives it a good kick.  Here, try again."

He dropped it a second time after a few seconds of holding it then really grabbed it for the third.  Esme let it go then and enjoyed letting him spray her with the stream before helping him aim it up.  She found herself shivering before he stopped letting it drop back down and suddenly the horrid heat didn't seem quite as unbearable.

"Yay! I'm making rain!" The kid goat raised his arms in a cheer as the droplets fell around him.

His right hand wiggled a bit while holding the hose, but he managed to keep it generally upright to rain over them both.  He didn't try to aim the spray but he did have to fight the pressure a bit to keep it flopping around.  The thought of holding It closer to the nozzle didn't occur to him and Esme was too busy enjoying the cold and enjoying watching him enjoy himself to fix his grip.

Tosh was soaked from hair and ears to bare narrow chest to his cute summer shorts.  His mother was just as soaked with her clothing clinging to her a bit revealingly.  Thoughts of wishing she'd worn a bra soon surfaced but they were pushed aside by the sheer joy of not feeling like she was about to catch on fire at any second.

After a minute she leaned in to adjust the nozzle a bit to a more droplet filled spray and he happily held it upright while she drug a chair over.  The mother goat was impressed that he hadn't thought to use it as a water cannon, but she really wasn't that surprised.  He was a smart boy and he would have had to suffer the awful summer heat to spray her with the hose, even for a few seconds.

"Would you like to make it even more like rain, Tosh?"

"Uh huh." He wiggled the hose to make the mist spray around a bit, but he wanted to know what she meant.  When she held out her hand he quickly handed her the hose."Show me! Show me!"

"Alright.  It's easier without this spray nozzle on the end, but..." The mother goat pressed her thumb over the the water spray. "If we block it up..."

After a second of pressure building up a spray of pressurized water, similar to what had already been coming out anyway.  The water spread out into many large droplets rather than the finer mist that'd been spraying out before.  Instead of a cloud, though, the droplets were in a smaller region spraying more chaotically in a half circle from her thumb.  Aiming it was much more difficult, but the drops were more rainlike as she aimed it up.

Her son giggled and then squealed as the larger drops were a lot colder than the mist had been.  They soaked his already soaked fur and shorts much faster too making him dance from the chill.  He didn't seem to mind though and simply ran around in a circle through the spray when it grew a bit too cold.  It was a wonderful time with her boy, and something to do other than wait for the air conditioning.

Story description for https://inkbunny.net/submissionview.php?id=141095

Oh the heat of summer and being stuck outdoors.  Such a pain.  Oh what could they do to keep cool outside?!  If only it would rain.  But wait... is... is that a hose...
