Character Description
Hong is a zoologist and an apprentice mage that runs the Tong Song snackery and restaurant on the bridge between northern and southern Diegoltun. His knowledge of animals is first rate but his knowledge of magic is a lot worse and he meddles and toys with magic in a careless and dangerous manner. A big kid, he never really learned responsibility especially since Shen, his older brother, the more mature of the two and the person in charge of looking after Hong, was involved in a magic spell that went awry and has never been quite the same again, leaving Hong to grow up without supervision. However Hong was able to run the Tong Song snackery and restaurant in Shen's as-good-as absence and even managed to make business boom. Hong can be useful in a fight by making mindless drones that attack the enemy or defend teammates. He can also teach you a few things about food smithing and fighting wild animals. He often has some sort of useful Urga type item he's found that he's willing to part with for a price and he can even breed animals for you.

Personality
Hong is a fun loving excitable child in the form of an adult. He can be very responsible and work hard but once the work is done he likes nothing more than to let his hair down and party. A very chatty and friendly fellow he's a good salesman and despite knowing an awful lot about many things he's never arrogant but instead quietly confident. Always one to help in times of trouble but his ties to his shop keep him from being a hero on a regular basis. However growing up without growing up comes at a cost as Hong finds it difficult to understand unhappy people and his "forget about it" approach can often make things worse and not better. Not that Hong doesn't get sad but the worst of his problems are hardly on a par with some other peoples and his lack of a seriousness bone i his body means he has no ability to perceive an unhappy person's feelings on their level. Prone to tantrums and bouts of tears he can be highly annoying but when he's happy he can get a party started anywhere.
Likes/Dislikes
likes fun, doing chores, cheering people up and experimenting, dislikes serious people, depressed people, angry people and know-it-all people.
Background/History
The Mao brothers Hong and Shen have been running the local snackery in Diegoltun for many years. About 6 years ago Hong was bored when he found a book on magic that Shen had tried to keep hidden. Being an amateur in magic spells and training to be a mage Hong took the book and started studying it being sure to put it back where he found it so Shen didn't notice it missing. A few weeks later Hong decided to show off what he'd learned to Shen and since he didn't practice the spell beforehand accidentally vaporized Shen. Hong ran the business in Shen's absence and even managed to make it more successful than before by adding a restaurant. After he got much better at magic Hong was able to bring Shen back from non-existence but also managed to screw up that spell and now Shen isn't quite his normal self. Regardless Hong was happy to have his brother back and as he learns more magic is able to tweak Shen bit by bit fixing him very gradually.
Relatives/Family
Hong lives and works with his brother Shen who he's very close to, especially now that Hong has too look after him. Hong also has a mother Hokoma and a father Gentao who live in Grenwuld. He calls them every day with Shen but they rarely meet up, especially since both the brothers and their parents have businesses to run which take a lot of their spare time.
World/Setting
The Valhalor world is a mixture between real-world, fantasy and sci-fi settings with the second item being a more dominant factor. There are 8 islands in Valhalor, 5 of which are divided into multiple countries. Many years ago there was a war between the Dozers of Meka Island and the Yovans of South Island, which resulted in Valhalor being divided into 2 warring alliances. Monsterville is a country in South Island that is strongly fantasy themed, though Olrit county in particular is very much modern day. Monsterville is mostly forested and has a European look. It's home to a lot of unusual wildlife and often hazardous kinds. Diegoltun City is the main setting for the Monsterville game which this character is from. The city has a wide range of businesses from shops, craft works and restaurants to offices, entertainment and tourist attractions. There are also several smaller villages around Diegoltun and the city itself is sat next to a much larger city known as Olrit.
Body
Hong is covered in white fur with black hair and originally black eyes, ears, a black tail tip and black inside his mouth but due to a failed magic experiment these are all now red.
Clothing
Hong wears a baggy red sweater and black baggy pants.
Accessories
Hong often plays with drones that he generates with magic and he often carries a black rucksack on his back. In the rucksack are scrawled notes on magic in little journals that he uses as a reference though he often can't read them.

The Mao brothers were invented by a member named Mao. Originally they had intended the characters to be simply two comical twins who clumsily ran the snack shop and always argued about everything drawing inspiration from Tweedledum and Tweedledee from Alice in wonderland. The idea being that if you were to buy their weird concoctions you would have to have some knowledge of whether they were offering you genuine food or just something they were experimenting with that could potentially give you food poisoning or in some cases just regular poisoning. To some degree that idea is still there but it a more muted fashion that doesn't result in the characters being convicted of attempted murder. However, their extensive knowledge of what's edible and good to eat added an extra layer to their development as characters because to know that much they'd have to have quite a lot of botanical and zoological knowledge. Knowing that much means that they would be really useful in fights against wild animals since they would know the best strategy to beat them. To make them have some individuality the concept of the younger brother being a dabbler in magic came about but knowing how careless he was lead to the idea of him trying to learn magic and causing a huge disaster. It was only when the idea of the character's roles being swapped to let the clumsy mage be a free roaming character that the idea of the older brother being involved in some sort of magical experiment that went wrong came about and it also explained why he was now a child. Since that change the Mao brothers have had way more development as characters especially since they are one of the few remaining characters from the original game that have not been canned or redesigned to the point that they are unrecognizable.

I like the idea of this guy being responsible for something instead of him being the annoying little bastard he started out as

I disagree. I loved all the fan rage over him. the devs should never have caved in. they could have used him as a running joke
