Empress of the Stars
" Catty-corner to Osterio Vantage was a shop of curiosities called 'Old World Charms.'

Jacent stood in front of it, hand on the glass, staring at a slightly damaged and age-withered Cabbage Patch doll. Memories flooded him.

He'd remembered a child clutching one during an attack by Sabotaj. A row of them on the shelves of a store that threatened to collapse thanks to the efforts of Tunnel Vision. Even a moment touching one that had been discarded by a girl that decided she was too old for them.

Did people now even realize what it was supposed to be? Who would recognize a pre-splice human baby? ... Was it even important?

"... Never liked those." Jacent was brought out of his contemplation by a black beetle girl with deep blue eyes and hair, looking at the doll. "I preferred Monster In My Pocket."

His brows scrunched together. "Do I know-..." He shifted in realization. "Widget."

A scene from

Ahmaguh, that was a lot of effort, but I've gone far too long without illustrating this world. Still, the thing I'm most pleased with is Widget. She came out cute. c:

You know I was first drawn into the work you did on the scenery. Very nice.

Widget did indeed come out cute as well.

Widget is definitely looking cute here. Freckles! She's got almost the same hair as Kimmie does as well, from the looks of it.

I do love her getting the name wrong, though, makes sense that it'd be lost in translation from half a millennium ago.

Yep! Very cute. ^^ Can't help but wonder though, does she have a carapace? O.O *lightly pokes with a stick curiously*

Post-splice bug subtypes are a bit different than your usual anthro bugs. Exoskeletons at this size are kind of a glaring weakness when it comes to the immune system, so instead, their chitin was made into a rubbery skin-like covering. They still tend to retain other tertiary aspects of their species, but not that particular one.

Oh awesome thanks. ^^ So softer more malleable and functional blend between the two. Makes sense.
Norithics

Yeah, exactly! Their skin is slightly firmer than other species, often compared (quite favorably) to dolphins, orcas and other aquatic subtypes in this era.

Just curious, are you aware of any particular sort of post-splice subtype that doesn't exist? o.O That is, any particular animal whose genome could not be re-sequenced either at all or in a beneficial way to bother? ^^  There must be some insect or aquatic lifeform out there that made the scientists go 'ick no, no one will ever want to be crossed with that thing'. ^^;

Well that is the thing, isn't it? If it were a matter of what people wanted to be, you'd find a very different variance. Their reasons for splicing people were much more urgent, however.

Ahh okay. So presumably no particular species left out. Aside perhaps those that are extinct, no post-splice dodo birds or dinos?

Thank you for not adding the creepy close-up of that doll.

I think you ought to be pleased with your background work as well! A little shading and smudging created a none-too-distracting foliage effect that works splendidly here.

*grabs widgets face* "IT'S POKEMON! LITERALLY THE NAME IS CUT DOWN TO POCKET MONSTERS!!!" *looks into her bug eyes* "Cause when you said monster in my pocket, Jacent might have a "Monster in his pocket" if you ask nicely he might let you play with his Lvl 100 Seviper, careful his Seviper don't want none unless somethings got buns hun!"
