Have you ever noticed how when you sometimes start to draw a character, the legs or arms look like they are in an awkward position, or maybe an arm seems too short or too long? Or perhaps an arm is beginning to appear like it is coming out the side of the belly, or something like that. Or you normally draw characters that look rather...well...amateureish.
A few days ago, the idea dawned on me of making a 3-D stick figure from small sticks and hot glue, with proportions similar to a character I'd have in mind. Then take Play-Doh and mold it over the wooden skeleton to look similar to the character in mind. It doesn't have to be detailed. The details are added with a computer.
Several photos of the figures are taken from different angles. Then the photo that looks like it will fit the best into a drawing is chosen. On the drawing the figurines are to be copied onto, a margin is dragged open to the side. Then the figures are pasted onto the drawing and moved into the margin. Then they are resized to go with the drawing. Then they are cut out with 'free form selection', and moved to the desired location on the drawing. Once there, the coloring in, fur hairs, eyes, mouth details, nose, facial expressions, and other details are drawn in over the image of the wood and putty figure.
In my recent posting 'Sexual Predator', the two fleeing cubs were created that way. The poses the cub characters are in would have been difficult to achieve by simply drawing them from scratch.
This posting will be moved to my scraps gallery in a few days.
