It's Halloween folks. Evil is in the air, a new era of fright is upon us... so who is that could win the gold for this year? I had a hard time deciding the winner this year, I mean we've seen ghosts and zombies, werewolves, vampires, just to name a few! There were several monsters aiming for this spot and all of them very eligible so how could I possibly pick a winner? But after much much thought and consideration I knew only one could claim the gold. Only one enduring, all encompassing figure of fear. His name is legendary, his appearance a mystery... but he is known all too well... the one... the only... Boogie Man~
Deciding on a look for the Boogie Man was a challenge. How do you depict something that has no concrete design? All other monsters have a set look that we accept, but the Boogie Man is a faceless evil and what few designs we've seen of him have varied greatly. From the blank, human shape of Micheal Myers, to the big, bad, bag of bugs that is Oogie Boogie to the... laughable 80's drenched look that we got from the Real Ghostbusters. So how would I design him?
Well, I went back to an older design of much, much older. Little characters I called Hoodlums, their bagged heads and large blank eyes seemed perfect and it evolved from there. I like to think of the Boogie Man as a very suave, intellectual character. He is distinguished and gets into your head with charm... but when he goes in for the kill he reveals his true form, that being fear incarnate. He is a being that becomes your worst fears, old as time, having gone by name names. Bogart, turn to Bogey and the more vulgar "Boogie" which he seems to have adopted quite willfully, the Man is just a nice sophisticated air he added. In recent eons he's adopted a set look that he prefers, but it can change.
As silly as 'boogie' may sound, he is to be feared, after all that's what he is. Pure terror. Rarely is he seen, even to some of the more ancient beings think he is a myth, but he exists even to today, preying on innocent and fear. Be wary, for he may out tonight~
Happy Halloween everyone! And may I say what a year it's been, I hope you enjoyed my countdown as much as I did making it, especially as this may very well be my last countdown... I know, it's shocking, but with my new comic series that's taking up the brunt of my artistic work and given the subject matter of it, Halloween will be a big thing for it. That's not to say I won't do anything at all, I'll continue to do countdowns, but probably not a full 31 day extravaganza like I have been doing. I just feel for now I've run dry on ideas and if I was going to stop I was going to go out with a bang and I really feel I did.
